Mar. 17, 2001 STAFF REPORT Montezuma-Cortez jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first half and then scored three times in the second half on Thursday afternoon, March 15, for a 5-0 varsity girls high school soccer win at Norman Johnson Memorial Field. The victory also was the first for new head coach Monica Plewe. The first goal was scored by Carolyn Britton. She trapped a cross and made her shot from outside of the penalty box. The second goal of the first half came when Sarah Cullington put one into the net off a corner kick from Vanessa Benally with about five minutes left. The final three goals were scored on breakaways, shot low and wide by Jennifer Siracusen, Nicole Stephens, and Andrea Jensen. The Panthers had several more scoring opportunities, failed to convert, according to Plewe. MCHS managed some 25 shots on goal but Ignacio’s goalie did a good job stopping many Cortez’ attempts. "Nicole, Jennifer, Vanessa and Felice Lucero did a great job controlling the midfield," she said. "Senior marking backs Jasmine Showers and Suzy Smart helped shut down the Ignacio offense." The Bobcats did not get many scoring chances throughout the game. What few chances they did get, Katie Whiteskunk attempted most of those. The Panthers played at Palisade Friday afternoon, March 16. They will not play again until the visit Central of Grand Junction on March 23 and then face Grand Junction High the next day. They will take some time off from soccer matches for Spring Break and then return to action against rival Durango on April 3. |
