Mar. 7, 2001

STAFF REPORT

MONTICELLO, Utah — The first race of the Four Corners Cup Mountain Bicycle Series will be held this Saturday, March 10, in Monticello. Actually, the first race will be held as part of the Blue Mountain Triathlon.

The weekend triathlon will start with a four-mile cross-country ski, continue with a six-mile run into Monticello and end with a 28-mile road bike ride to Newspaper Rock. This year’s course is different from last year where the run was the last event. Construction on the road to the skiing area has demanded a change in order of the events, but one thing is for sure this year, plenty of snow is available for the skiing leg of the race.

Registration for the event will take place from 7-9 a.m. Saturday above Monticello at the ski start in the Blue Mountains. Fees for the race is $30 for individuals and $65 for teams. All entrants will get a tee shirt and are invited to a race-ending lunch at the Canyonlands National Park finish line.

For details, phone Eddie Allred at (435) 587-2029.

Entrants into the Four Corners Cup will receive 30 points for doing any section of the triathlon, half a first-place finish in the future mountain bike races. The Four Corners Cup is a mountain bike points series consisting of 11 races held throughout the Four Corners Area.

The next race ill be held at Aztec, N.M., on March 25. This race will consist of a weekend of events surrounding the annual UFO landing site of 1941. Racers and non-racers will be treated to a tour of the alleged site.

Each racer, whether beginner, sport or expert, will race different route distances. The cost of this event is $25 which will also include a host of events including a barbecue. For information about the Alien Bike Run, phone (505) 334-7658.
