Mar. 1, 2001 STAFF REPORT Mark Lovat, a strength coach with the Green Bay Packers, will be the featured clinician at the Cortez Speed and Strength Clinic for middle school and high school athletes. "This clinic will give area youth a chance to learn how to get bigger, stronger, quicker, jump higher, faster and become the athlete within you," according to event sponsor Bob Archibeque. The clinic will run from 3:30-6:30 p.m. Friday, March 2, and from 8 a.m.-noon Saturday, March 3. The cost is $25 which includes a clinic T-shirt, breakfast and handouts. Registration deadline is Feb. 28. This event is for students in grades 7-12. For more information, phone Bob Archibeque at 565-3722, ext. 222. "The kids will learn the latest trends in speed, strength, plyometrics, quickness and nutrition from a professional who has worked with top National Football League players," he added. Lovat has worked with athletes such as Reggie White, Brett Favre, Dorsey Levins, Ahman Green, Darren Sharper, Santana Dotson, and Antonio Freeman, according to Archibeque. On the first day of the clinic or mini-camp, those attending will learn about flexibility (in the morning session), the importance of flexibility, how to develop flexibility, drills and exercises to promote flexibility and learn questions to mark on flexibility. During the afternoon, the young athletes will learn about speed (quickness). They will learn about the principals of speed, how to get faster, how to develop quickness, develop speed markers and learn drills used by the Green Bay Packers. An early-evening discussion will center around plyometrics. Correct methods, how to develop explosiveness, vertical jump, plyo-drills, and understand how the Green Bay Packers use their plyo program. Following a breakfast Saturday morning, those attending will learn about nutrition, supplements and illegal products. They will understand what is best for the middle-high school athlete. They will learn about such products as Creatine and other athletic enhancers. Strength and development is the key topic for later in the morning. Methods for strength development, how it affects speed and explosiveness (starts) in sports, they learn techniques and see demonstrations, and learn about training programs the Packers use. The day will be followed by a quick question and answer period over the topics addressed. |
