MCHS to host Speed and Strength Clinic

Feb. 20, 2001

STAFF REPORT

The Cortez Speed and Strength Clinic will feature Green Bay Packers strength coach Mark Lovat at Montezuma-Cortez High School.

"This clinic will give area youth a chance to learn how to get bigger, stronger, quicker, to jump higher and faster, and become the athlete within you," according to event sponsor Bob Archibeque.

The clinic will run from 3:30-6:30 p.m. March 2 and from 8 a.m.-noon March 3. The cost is $25, which includes a clinic T-shirt, breakfast and handouts. Registration deadline is Feb. 28. This event is for students in grades 7-12.

For more information, phone Bob Archibeque at 565-3722, ext. 222.

"The kids will learn the latest trends in speed, strength, plyometrics, quickness and nutrition from a professional who has worked with top National Football League players," he added.

Lovat has worked with athletes such as Reggie White, Brett Favre, Dorsey Levins, Ahman Green, Darren Sharper, Santana Dotson, and Antonio Freeman, according to Archibeque.

On the first day of the clinic or mini-camp, those attending will learn about flexibility (in the morning session).

During the afternoon, the young athletes will learn the principles of speed, how to get faster and develop quickness, how to develop speed markers and some drills used by the Green Bay Packers.

An early-evening discussion will center around plyometrics: correct methods, how to develop explosiveness, vertical jumping, plyo-drills, and how the Green Bay Packers use their plyo program.

Following a breakfast Saturday morning, those attending will learn about nutrition, supplements and illegal products. They will understand what is best for the middle-high-school athlete. They will learn about such products as creatine and other athletic enhancers.

Strength and development is the key topic for later in the morning.

The day will be followed by a quick question-and-answer period over the topics addressed.
