PHOENIX — Riley Calvillo, Chelsey Galyon and Kyle Galyon spent a weekend recently bicycle racing in this large desert city. All three of them came home with trophies.

The trio raced three races in two days. They raced at Black Mountain Bicycle Motocross on Friday and Saturday nights and Black Canyon BMX on Saturday during the day.

Calvillo, 13, who only recently started racing, finished third in his main event on Friday night. He took third also next day. He came out of the gate in his first moto and won. In the main he captured second place.

Chelsey Galyon, 9, who has been racing as a novice (which puts her in a class with all boys), also raced three times. She didn’t transfer to her main on Friday night. On Saturday, she finished fifth in her main after passing another rider right at the finish line. That evening, she was moved from the novice class to the girls class, which proved to be the right move for her. She finished second in her first moto and she took second in her second moto. In the main, she crossed the line in second.

Kyle Galyon, 12, who races both 20-inch class and cruiser class bikes, raced 13 motos and six main on the two bikes. The first night of action, he came out on his 20-inch bike and took first in his moto and then he grabbed first in the main. He finished third on his cruiser. Saturday’s finishes were a repeat of Friday night. Saturday night he took another third on the cruiser and finished second on his 20. He has been racing since last June and finished the 2000 season 12th ranked out of 148 riders in Colorado District no. 1.

The three riders, who are all ABA (American Bicycle Association) members, did well against the competition in Phoenix. The Phoenix riders often race as many as four times a week all year long. Most of them are very good riders.

The local kids will return to Phoenix in March to compete in the Winter Nationals. That event could see as many as 800 riders from all over the United States.
