Mancos claims first-ever San Juan Basin League wrestling crown

NUCLA — Mancos High School claimed its first-ever Class 2A San Juan Basin League title in wrestling Thursday night at the annual league duals hosted by Nucla High School.

Following Mancos were Nucla, Dolores County, Norwood, and Dolores in the team standings. For their efforts, Mancos will receive a banner for to hang in the Performance Center.

The Blue Jays, coached by Travis Bryant, opened by taking a 56-18 win over Dolores County High School.

Many matches were forfeits, as was the case most of the evening with all the matches. Some of the smaller schools have trouble filling all the weight classes. But several matches did take place.

Dolores County’s Kyle Riddell won by fall over Vince Bazile in 3:48 in the 103-pound bout. Mancos’ Anthony Mestas, 112, pinned Matt Beanland in 2:25. MHS’s Daniel Wilson, 125, won by technical fall (21-2) over Trinity Cressler. Jeremiah Muniz, 130, pinned Randy Curtis in 3:26.

Mancos defeated Norwood 58-18. In the matches that were held, Daniel Wilson won by pin in 2:30. Muniz pinned in 49 seconds. Scott Koppenhafer, 135, decisioned Zane Wilson 5-2. Mancos’ Kelly Mitchell, 145, was pinned in 3:46. MHS won at 160 when Philip Wilson pinned in 2:19. MHS lost at 189 when Jeff Roland was pinned in 43 seconds.

Mancos beat Dolores 62-18.

Mestas pinned Dolores’ Tina Ramirez in 1:52. Koppenhafer decisioned Shawn Everett 8-3. Philip Wilson pinned Casey Garvin in 1:34 in a 171 contest. Jeff Roland was pinned by Dolores’ Colter Dunagan in 1:49.

The Blue Jays’ final opponent was Nucla. Mancos won 48-33 and took home the title.

"This was by far the best team match of the night," Bryant said. "It was a real barn-burner."

The 130-pound contest between Muniz and defending state champ Rob Garvey was a tight one. With the score deadlocked at 2-2 at the end of regulation, Garvey was awarded a takedown for the win in sudden-death 4-2 win.

"That was the best individual match of the night. I thought it was a controversial call," Bryant added.

In other matches, Bazile pinned Doug Dillon in 1:13. Mancos’ Cody Montoya pinned Carolyn Mayer in 25 seconds. MHS’ Jakob Tallent, 152, pinned his opponent in 2:19. MHS’ David Malenski was pinned by Sabin Mock in 1:18. Philip Wilson was pinned by in 3:17. Roland was pinned by Jason Mock in 18 seconds. Kevin Schlemmer, heavyweight, was pinned by Cory Dillon in 26 seconds.

In the match between Dolores and Dolores County, the Bulldogs won 36-30. Beanland pinned Ramirez. Tyler Hicks of Dolores, 215, pinned Kyle Krafka.

It was a close team match between Dolores County and Norwood. DCHS won 30-28.

Spitzer won by fall in the first period. Cressler won by pin. Curtis lost by fall. Krafka was pinned.

Against Nucla, DCHS did well. Riddell won by pin. Spitzer lost 0-6 to Garvey. Krafka lost by fall.

Dolores and Dolores County will not compete again until the annual Terry Rockwell Memorial in Dolores on Feb. 3. Mancos, which will also compete in the Rockwell, will host Bayfield for a dual beginning at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 30, in the Peformance Center.

The Panthers will dual at Fruita-Monument at 10 a.m. today, Jan. 27, and at Delta at about 2:30 p.m. also today. The Panthers will return home to host Montrose at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 2, and Grand Junction High at 9 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 3, in the friendly confines of Ron Wright Memorial Gym on the campus of Montezuma-Cortez High School.
