BY JIM THOMAS Instead of having two meets at home (Ute Mountain Recreation Center Pool) this Friday and Saturday, Jan. 26-27, there will only be one girls swimming meet hosted by Montezuma-Cortez High School. That meet will be on Friday beginning at 4 p.m. Attending the meet will be Fruita-Monument, Delta, Gunnison, and Glenwood Springs. The meet on Saturday against Gunnison, and Glenwood Springs has now been moved to Durango, according to MCHS head coach Mark Knox. Joining the Demons and the Panthers will be Gunnison, Glenwood Springs, Delta, and Moffat County. The Panthers are coming off competing at two major meets, at the Farmington Invitational on Jan. 20 at the Albuquerque Academy Invitational on Jan. 13. At the Farmington Invitational at the Farmington Aquatic Center last Saturday, Jan. 20, Los Alamos (N.M.) won with 464 points. Durango took second with 327, followed by Santa Fe (N.M.) High 325, Albuquerque St. Pius X 317, Farmington High 295, Santa Fe St. Michael’s 193, Albuquerque Sandia Prep 138, Farmington Piedra Vista 70, MCHS 68, Santa Fe Capital 52, Santa Fe Prep 37, and Gallup (N.M.) 29. Cortez girls turned in some good performances during the meet. Lindsey Maez finished 20th in the 200 individual medley in 2 minutes, 54.42 seconds while teammate Amy Greene came in 22nd in 3:01.48. Kelsey Green came in 10th in the 50 freestyle in 28:63. Greene finished 15th and Maez 16th in the 100 butterfly in 1:21.98 and 1:22.25, respectively. Sarah Wallace and Jasmine Showers finished 21st and 23rd. Green came in ninth in the 100 free in 1:02.96. Haukeness came in 17th in 1:08.69. Teralynn Vallery placed 15th in 500 free in 7:14.46. Sheena Burns came in 25th and Tracy Berhost 26th in 100 back stroke. Haukeness grabbed 12th in the 100 breast with a time of 1:21.38 while Anna Newman finished 21st and Tammy Henry 23rd. The 200-yard medley relay team of Green, Greene, Tessa Haukeness and Maez finished 14th in 2 minutes, 21.82 seconds. The 200 free relay team of Green, Haukeness, Maez and Wallace came in 10th with a clocking of 2:00.75. The 400 free relay team of Jessica Millican (who was sick for that meet), Greene, Burns, and Wallace came in 14th in 4:49.81. In diving, Tiandra Sharp came in ninth place with 172.25 points while Rebecca Whitehead took 12th with 154.87. The week before the girls competed at Albuquerque Academy. Host Albuquerque Academy won with 153 points. Los Alamos took second with 106, followed by Durango 74, St. Pius X 71, Santa Fe High 58, Farmington High 40, St. Michael’s 16, Hope (N.M.) Christian 15, Bosque (N.M.) Prep 13, Sandia Prep 6, and Piedra Vista 5. Only the top 10 places counted. Wallace came in 21st and Jennifer Greene 25th in 200 free. In the 200 individual medley, Maez came in 22nd, Amy Greene 23rd, and Vallery 28th. The 50 free saw Green take 21st, Henry 34th, and Jenna Dillon 35th. Cortez made a decent showing in the 100 fly as Maez came in 14th in 1:20.22 while Wallace placed 18th, Amy Greene 19th, and Showers 21st. Haukeness placed 21st and Burns 29th in 100 free. Vallery came in 12th in 500 free in 7:26.74 while Whitney Carnahan followed in 13th in 8:16.97. Burns finished 29th in the 100 back. Haukeness touched in 19th and Millican 27th in the 100 breast. The 200 free relay team of Maez, Showers, Millican, and Wallace finished 15th with a clocking of 2:12.53. The 400 free relay unit of Green, Haukeness, Amy Greene, and Wallace came in 13th in 4:36.61. MCHS also had another 400 free relay team (Burns, Vallery, Carnahan and Showers) entered and they placed 16th. The Panthers will compete at Delta on Feb. 2 and at Grand Junction on Feb. 3. The Western Slope Championships (Regionals) is set for Feb. 9-10 at Orchard Mesa Middle School Pool in Grand Junction. The Colorado State Girls Swimming Championships will be held Feb. 15-16 at the United States Air Force Academy Pool near Colorado Springs. |
