STAFF REPORT

After nine varsity basketball games, the Dolores High School team is currently undefeated under first-year head coach Rob Mellott.

They are coming off a pair of wins this past week. They beat Class 3A Ignacio 54-46 Tuesday night, Jan. 16, and opened San Juan Basin League play with a 44-36 win at Norwood on Saturday, Jan. 13.

In the most recent game against the Bobcats, Dolores ran out to a 22-9 lead at the end of the first quarter and then played steady for the next three quarters. The Bears led 31-20 at the intermission.

DHS point guard Jennifer Trevillian led the way with a game-high 23 points. Sarah Nielson popped in 14 en route to the win. Ashley Reed and Amanda Cross each grabbed nine rebounds. The Bears finished with 40 boards.

Against Norwood, the Bears methodically took the host team apart during the first half. They led 13-7 at the end of the first quarter and held a 23-15 margin at the break. The teams played evenly in the second half.

Trevillian finished with 12 and Joni Everett added nine. Tracy Everett cleaned the glass for 11 boards. And that’s where the difference came into play. Dolores outrebounded Norwood 41-27.

DHS, despite losing most of its top scorers and rebounders a year ago, simply reloaded and are now the team to beat in the Class 2A SJBL.
