Jan. 13, 2001

ALBUQUERQUE — They are moving to the major meet portion of their 2000-01 girls swimming schedule. The Panthers will compete all day today, Jan. 13, at the annual Albuquerque Academy Invitational. The large meet actually opened up Friday night, Jan. 12, with some diving events.

The next major meet on the schedule is the annual Farmington High Invitational Jan. 19-20. Then the Panthers will return home to host Delta and Fruita-Monument in a triangular Jan. 26 at the Ute Mountain Recreation Center Pool. Montezuma-Cortez High School will host Gunnison and Glenwood Springs in another Triangular on Jan. 27.

"Overall, the team strength is improving as we go into our major invitational meets at Albuquerque and Farmington. Both should provide excellent competition for our team as well as (competing in) state-of-the-art facilities," MCHS head coach Mark Knox said. The MCHS diving team of Rebecca Whitehead, Connie Berger, and Tiandra Sharp competed for the first time this season at Pueblo last Friday, Jan. 5, in a double dual against Pueblo West and Pueblo County. The Panthers went 0-2 in the duals. Pueblo West went 2-0 and Pueblo County 1-1.

"The team had some very good swims over the weekend," Knox commented. "Although the matchups were such at the Pueblo County meet on Friday that we did not score all that well, we did have some excellent swims."

Kelsey Green placed first in the 100-yard freestyle by trimming 2.38 seconds off her best and she took second in the 50 free. Tessa Haukeness won the 100 breast stroke. The relay team of Green, Haukeness, Lindsey Maez, and Amy Greene touched the wall in second place in the 200 medley relay with a seasonal best of 2 minutes, 17.66 seconds. The relay team of Haukeness, Jessica Millican, Maez, and Green came in second in the 200 free relay in 2:04.53.

Maez placed fourth in the 200 individual medley, cutting 6.60 seconds off her previous best with a clocking of 2:56.68. Suzy Smart came in fourth in the 100 back in 1:30.07.

"This team showed a lot of enthusiasm in the triangular meet on Saturday, Jan. 6, at Pueblo South," Knox remarked.

Pueblo South won with 314 team points. MCHS came in second with 233 while Aurora Gateway placed third with 184.

Maez finished second in the 200 individual medley in 2:59.68. Sharp came in fourth place in 1 meter diving with 115.65 points. Kelsey Green finished second in the 50 free (28.52) and 100 free (1:03.69). Laura Waechter came in fourth in the 500 free in 8:10.29, cutting a whopping 13.40 seconds.
