NUCLA — Mancos High School wrestling team continues to be impressive.

The Blue Jays finished second over the weekend at the Nucla Tournament. The host Mustangs won the team title. They got a good look at San Juan Basin League preseason favorite Nucla. The teams will tangle head-to-head at the San Juan Duals, set for Nucla Jan. 25.

Vince Bazile, 103 pounds, started things off by taking second place. Anthony Maestas, 119, also came in second.

Three Blue Jays captured championships on the day. Jeremiah Muniz won at 130, Scott Koppenhafer won at 135 and Mike Montoya won at 140.

Kelly Mitchell grabbed fourth place at 145. Davy Malinsky took third at 160. Kevin Schlemmer came in fourth at heavyweight.

This was their first meet since returning from the long Christmas-New Year’s break. Before the break, the Jays took second at the Bayfield Tournament, third at Cedaredge, third at Gunnison, and beat Montezuma-Cortez JVs 48-36 in a home dual.

The Blue Jays will compete in the Navajo Nation Tournament all day at Shiprock, N.M., this Saturday, Jan. 13. After that they will get a chance to see fellow San Juan League foes Dolores and Dolores County at the Grand County Tournament in Moab, Utah, on Jan. 20.

Dolores County will host Shiprock, N.M., and Durango JVs in a double dual beginning at 6 p.m. today, Jan. 11, in the Cortez Middle School Gym. The Bulldogs are forced to use nearby gymnasiums because the gym at DCHS is condemned. Montezuma-Cortez High School will visit Monticello, Utah, for a dual at 7 p.m. today. They will then travel to Denver to compete in the Mullen Tournament all day this Saturday, Jan. 13.
