Jan. 6, 2001 BY JIM THOMAS DURANGO — Two former area high school athletes are making an impact at Fort Lewis College basketball men’s and women’s basketball programs. Cara Hill, daughter of Gary and Glenda Hill of Mancos, is a redshirt junior on the Skyhawk’s women’s team. Charlie Wilson, son of Wes and Chris Wilson of Pleasant View, also is a redshirt junior on the men’s team. Hill, 5-foot-7, is a two-year letterwinner and starter at shooting guard. She appeared in all 26 games last year and started 18 of those. She averaged 6.5 points per game last year and is scoring more this year. She popped in a career-high 21 points against Adams State, which stopped a 19-game losing streak. She played last year along side her sister, Casey, who graduated in May. So far for the 2000-01 season, she has hit 18 of 35 shots from the floor but made only 2 of 11 from three-point range. Hill has connected on 8 of 13 from the free throw line. She has grabbed 9 offensive and 21 defensive rebounds. Hill has dished out 17 assists but has turned the ball over 33 times. The Skyhawk women are 1-9 overall and 0-4 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play. Currently, Hill ranks among the top three-point scorers in FLC history. She ranks 18th on that list with 17 going into this season. She has dished out 78 assists for her career. She also has 158 rebounds and 32 steals. Academically, Hill is an exercise science major. While at MHS, she competed in basketball, volleyball, and track. She was a three-year starter for basketball and played in the Colorado All-State Game. She started two years as middle blocker on the volleyball team and excelled in track as a hurdler and sprinter. She won the school’s Fighting Heart Award and graduated in 1997. Wilson, 6-8, has earned one letter after earning a starting position in 1999-2000. He saw reserve duty as forward and center in 1998-99. He appeared in all 26 games and started 22 of those last year. He averaged 5.8 points per game. He scored in double figures four times last season. He grabbed 2.86 rebounds per outing. He recorded a double-double (scoring-rebounding in double figures) against Mid-America Nazarene College. So far for the 2000-01 season, Wilson has 14 offensive rebounds and 25 defensive rebounds. He has made 18 of 30 field goals (.600) and 1 of 4 from three-point land. He has made 8 of 14 charity tosses. The Skyhawk men are 2-9 overall and 0-4 in RMAC. Academically, Wilson also is an exercises science major. While at Montezuma-Cortez High School, Wilson led the Panthers to a 22-2 record en route to the Southwest League title and a Class 4A State Basketball Tournament appearance his senior season in 1997. He averaged 13 points and 7.3 rebounds for MCHS that year. He set a school record for field goal shooting percentage. He also played first base on the baseball team. |
