Hunters and fishermen need to pick up 2001 licenses

Dec. 28, 2000

BY THE COLORADO DIVISION OF WILDLIFE

DENVER — With the passing of the year near, hunters and anglers are reminded to pick up new licenses before taking to the field in 2001.

"Many hunters are in the middle of their waterfowl and small game seasons right now, and ice fishing season is just getting under way," said Pam Tischendorf, customer service manager for the Division of Wildlife in Fort Collins. "It’s important for sportsmen and women to remember to visit a Division of Wildlife Service Center or license agent and buy a 2001 license. Every year, there’s a number of folks who forget to do this and end up hunting or fishing with an expired license."

Year 2000 fishing and small game licenses will expire at midnight Dec. 31. Beginning Jan. 1, anglers and hunters will be required to have 2001 licenses before going afield.

"If you hunt and fish, your best bet is to buy a combination small game and fishing license," Tischendorf said. "Not only will you save money, you’ll also be legal to either hunt or fish in the new year."

Licenses make great holiday gifts and are available at all Division of Wildlife Service Centers and retail license agents throughout the state. To purchase a new small game license for yourself or someone else, you’ll need to supply proof that the license holder has taken a hunter education course. To purchase either a fishing license or small game license, you’ll also have to provide a conservation certificate number. If the angler or hunter does not have a conservation certificate, service centers and license agents can issue one for free. Resident small game licenses cost $15.25, resident fishing licenses cost $20.25 and resident small game and fishing combination licenses cost $30.25.

It’s important to remember that waterfowl hunters must have valid state and federal waterfowl stamps attached to their conservation certificate to hunt in 2001. In addition, both waterfowl hunters and small game hunters must have a valid Harvest Information Program number written on their 2001 license before hunting in the new year. Hunters with a valid number on their year 2000 license can simply transfer the number onto their 2001 license. Harvest Information Program numbers are valid until March 31. Small game and waterfowl hunters without a Harvest Information Program number can obtain their free number via the Internet at http://www.wetland.net  or by calling 1-800-938-5263.
