Dec. 26, 2000 STAFF REPORT Two Montezuma-Cortez High School varsity volleyball players have been to The Rocky Mountain News’ All-State Team for Class 4A. Junior Casey Bauer was chosen Second Team while sophomore Stefanie Allison was named Honorable Mention. Members of the First Team were senior Amy Corder of Berthoud, senior Jessica Hammerich of Fort Morgan, junior Lindsey Hillegass of Conifer, senior Jessica Johnson of Steamboat Springs, senior Molly Law of Mullen, and senior Lisa Samuelson of Rifle. The Class 4A Player of the Year was Hammerich while Mi Santos of Berthoud was named Coach of the Year. The newspaper also named its Class 2A team as well. Chosen to the First Team were senior Krystal Brown of Holyoke, senior Jessica Brown of West Grand, senior Ashley Fundus of Caliche, senior Katie Lanting of Alexander Dawson, senior Hannah Sheehan of West Grand, and senior Laur Yahn of Caliche. Senior Kellie Hart of Telluride was named Honorable Mention. The Class 2A Player of the Year was Brown of West Grand while Jolene Dodge of Byers was named Coach of the Year. Chelsea Spotts of Fort Collins has been named the Colorado volleyball athlete of the year by VarsityOnline.com after leading the Lambkins to the Class 5A State Semifinals. Strong consideration for athlete of the year was given to Boulder's Devon Forster, but the 6-1 senior missed five weeks of the season after an auto accident left her with a broken left index finger. Nonetheless, she came back just in time to lead the Panthers to their first Class 5A state title. VarsityOnline.com's Class 4A player of the year is Fort Morgan's Hammerich, who averaged nearly five kills per game and guided the Mustangs to the state semifinals. The senior was a unanimous choice for the Class 4A Northern League MVP. Corder of state champion Berthoud, and Law of Berthoud were also given strong consideration. The toughest choice for player of the year came in Class 2A, where any one of four players would have been a good choice. VarsityOnline.com gives the nod, however, to senior Fundus of Caliche as the Class 2A Athlete of the Year. Fundus helped the Buffaloes to the state championship and was a tough player at any position on the floor. Also considered were: Yahn of Caliche, Brown of West Grand and Brown of Holyoke. |
