Blue Jay Classic schedule announced

Several new teams are making appearances this year plus an old advisary at this year’s annual Blue Jay Classic, which gets under way this Monday, Dec. 18, and concludes Saturday, Dec. 23.

Ignacio and Montezuma-Cortez high schools are making an appearance this year in the basketball tournament plus longtime nemesis Farmington High JVs and host Mancos on the boys’ side. On the girls’ side in addition to host Mancos will be Kirtland-Central JVs, Durango JVs, and FHS JVs. The MHS varsity girls will play at 5:30 p.m. and the MHS varsity boys at about 7:15 on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday.

"I feel very proud about the boys’ side of the tournament," MHS head boys coach Gary Hill said. "Cortez will be tough. Farmington always has a good team. And we already know about Ignacio (the Bobcats beat Mancos 59-50 back on Dec. 5 at Ignacio). This certainly will not be a cake walk by any means."

The MHS girls have been idle since they were defeated by Bayfield 52-41 at home on Dec. 9. They will take a 2-2 mark into the tournament.

Here is the schedule for the varsity games in the Performance Center: Durango JVs and FHS JVs girls will meet at 5:30 and FHS JV and Cortez JV boys at 7:15 Monday night; Mancos girls vs. K-C JV at 5:30 and MHS boys vs. Ignacio at 7:15 Tuesday; K-C JVs will play FHS JV girls at 5:30 and Ignacio will take on FHS JV boys at 7:15 Thursday; Mancos girls will host Durango JVs at 5:30 and Mancos boys will host Cortez JVs at 7:15 Friday; Durango JV girls will tangle with K-C JV at 2 p.m., MCHS JV boys will meet Ignacio at 3:45, Mancos girls will host FHS JVs at 5:30 and Mancos boys will host FHS JVs at 7:15 Saturday.

Competing in the Junior Varsity Tournament on the boys’ side will be Bayfield JV, Cortez C, Mancos JV, and Durango C. Competing in the JV Tournament on the girls’ side will be Cortez C, Farmington C, Durango C, and MHS JVs. Action takes place in the Old Gym.

The champions will be determined by two criteria. The first is the best overall record and then ties broken by best overall free throw percentage. Mancos boys and girls are the defending champions.
