STAFF REPORT

Three coaches, including one head coach, have resigned their respective positions at Mancos High School. The Re-6 Board of Education has approved the resignations.

MHS Head football coach Terry Newlin announced his resignation at the end of the season.

"My decision is based on our performance for the last three seasons where we have finished fourth place and have only won three league games in that time frame," Newlin wrote in a letter to the board. "I feel that the athletes do not believe in my approach and philosophy. Therefore, in order for our athletes to have success, the players need someone with a new approach and newer ideas than what I have been providing."

Newlin has been a coach at MHS for nine seasons, seven of those as head coach. He guided the Blue Jays to three post-season appearances during those years with two of those all the way to the Class A-11 man quarterfinals.

Tanya Young, who has been Color Guard coach and assistant track coach for the past seven years, announced she is resigning. Young will continue her position on the school board.

"I appreciate the chance to maybe make a small impact in these kids’ lives and will miss them all terribly, but my life is at a cross roads and I am trying to pursue some other things that will be taking up a lot more of my time and I won’t have the flexibility that I now have to coach," she wrote in a letter to the board.

Paul Wilson, who has been an assistant wrestling coach and Mancos Middle School wrestling coach, announced his resignation as well.

"Due to scheduling difficulties I will be unable to fulfill my duties as assistant wrestling coach. I respectfully submit my resignation effective immediately," he wrote.

On the hiring side, Spencer Lake has been hired as assistant wrestling coach. Lake, who only graduated from MHS in 1998, wrestled and participated at the Class 2A State Wrestling Tournament. Lake was an all-around athlete for MHS. He played halfback for the football team, played basketball and later wrestling, and competed on the track team.
