Cortez Journal Senior Joe Siracusan of the Montezuma-Cortez High School varsity boys soccer team was chosen First Team All-Southwest League for his efforts during the 2000 season. Siracusan helped the Panthers to a playoff berth against Berthoud in the Class 4A State Soccer Championships. "Joe meant everything to the team," first-year MCHS head coach Todd Starr said. "We would not have made the playoffs without him. He was worth 2-3 goals saved. Several teams would have beaten us a lot more without him." Siracusan played sweeper back. Once in a while he was moved into the midfield, but Starr said, "our defense then collapsed." He also played striker his final game of the season. Siracusan was one of the few unanimous choices, according to Starr. "He is one of those rare seniors who don’t pick on freshmen. He would, instead, help them and encourage them. He was a role model because of his on-the-field and off-the-field ethic. We will miss him tremendously next fall," Starr added. Class 5A Southwestern League champion Durango headed the list of players selected to the elite team that was announced recently. The Demons had four players make the team. They were seniors Bernardo Costa and Reed Duvall plus junior Kyle Fredrick and senior goalie Nick Clark. In addition, Durango’s Scott Emrich was chosen Coach of the Year in his first season guiding the Demons. Grand Junction had three First Team picks in seniors Zach Hepburn, Cody Bumgardner, and junior Derek Bihr. Central of Grand Junction and Fruita-Monument each had one First Team choice. Charlie Schmaltz made the team for the Warriors and Jeremiah Fenske for the Wildcats. Both are seniors. Siracusan, Schmaltz, Hepburn, and Fredrick all earned First-Team designations for the second consecutive year. |
