Special Olympics presents awards, honors

Special Olympics Colorado recently held its Southwest Area Celebration 2000 at Echo Basin Dude Ranch.

Awards of excellence were presented to athletes and volunteers.

The Outstanding Female Athlete honor went to Jennifer Romero of Cortez. She was recognized for her hard work in swimming and snow shoeing. Romero traveled to the State Special Olympics meets several times with her family. She has been chosen to represented Team USA in the Special Olympics World Games in Anchorage in March, 2001.

The Outstanding Male Athlete was won by Leo Cross of Cortez. He works for the City of Cortez and at a local nursing home. According to information from the Special Olympics, Cross exhibits, "a truly wonderful attitude of sportsmanship. He shows up to every practice and competition despite any obstacles he has to overcome. He has a very generous nature and will always cheer for the opposing team. He says that team sports are his favorite.

The Outstanding Volunteer award went to Dolores resident Benny Cordova. He and his wife, Sondra Jackson, have given tirelessly to their time and energy even when the results have been small. Cordova is Assistant Director of Housing in Towaoc.

The Outstanding Supporting Organization award went to Adaptive Sports Association of Durango. Scott Beckstead of Durango was presented the Unified Partner of the Year Award.

The Outstanding Family went to Josh, Jermiah, Marina, and John Duffy of Pagosa Springs. The Outstanding Coach was Kathryn Pokorney of Pagosa. Quality Inn and Suites of Durango was given the Outstanding Business Award.
