All hope is still not gone for the Panthers to make the Class 4A Boys Soccer State Tournament. But the task is getting tougher.

They have got to beat or tie either Grand Junction High (5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 13) or Central of Grand Junction (10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 14) in order to qualify. Both of those matches are in Grand Junction.

Durango’s Kyle Fredrick scored a hat trick within the first 25 minutes and finished with five goals on Tuesday, Oct. 10, in leading the Durango High School boys soccer team to a 7-0 win over Montezuma-Cortez at Norman Johnson Memorial Field.

"Frankly, Durango may be the best high school team I have ever seen," MCHS head coach Todd Starr remarked. "They are a well oiled machine. They do everything right."

Bernardo Costa added the Demons’ other two goals. Nick Clark and Trey Duvall combined for the shutout in the goalie crease. Durango dominated the game by keeping the ball in the attacking half of the field. The Demons led 4-0 at the intermission.

The Demons took 36 shots on goal while Cortez managed only two.

On the bright side for the Panthers, goalie Garret Andrews stopped a penalty kick. Starr credited the defensive play of Jeff Yarbrough from keeping Durango to scoring more goals.

"The one thing we did gain was experience," Starr said. "They know what it is like to play a very good team."

The Class 5A powerhouse Demons improved to 12-1 overall and 8-0 in Southwest League. Cortez slipped to 2-1-9 overall.
