Oct. 7, 2000 BY JIM THOMAS Dolores County High School picked up a State Championship. This is an award it won from last school year. The Colorado High School Activities Association formally notified Principal-Activities Director Steve Baroch recently that DCHS was chosen as the 1999-2000 Class 2A State Sportsmanship Champion. Judy Barnett, CHSAA assistant commissioner, will present the school with a plaque during halftime of the annual Homecoming football game against San Juan League foe Dolores (kickoff set for 1 p.m. today, Oct. 7, at Weber Park Field). DCHS also will be given a separate cover State Championship banner to attach to the sportsmanship banner. "Your commitment to sportsmanship has been recognized by your league and by the association as being an exemplary program. The special attention that you have given to this critical educational area is greatly appreciated and it is our sincere pleasure to recognize your efforts," Barnett said in a letter she had written to Baroch. "There is a check list of things we have to do and send in a form at the end of the school year. We don’t meet all the criteria, but we do a pretty good job. We checked off those items we had met and sent that information into CHSAA. They have a committee that selects the winners based on that," he explained. She praised Baroch on his successful implementation of the "Sportsmanship - It’s How You Play The Game" program which is designated to improve sportsmanship. "We were shocked that we had won," Baroch commented. "This is a great plume for our kids, the school, and our community. We have some really good fans here. They are very supportive of our activities. "I don’t know if this had anything to do with it. But when we went to Wiggins (for last year’s Class A football quarterfinals) we probably had more fans than they did. Hopefully, this is something we can build upon. And now the students and fans have got to live up to it now. We just want to continue to improve on this because we do pride ourselves in our sportsmanship," Baroch added. |
