Hanson tourney draws 34 teams

The 13th annual Dean Hanson Memorial Golf Tournament was held Sept. 9 at Conquistador Golf Course. And golfers from throughout the area competed all day in the 5-person scramble event which drew 34 teams.

The tournament, sponsored by the Cortez Area Association of Realtors, is held each year to fund up to seven scholarships given to area high schools each year. It is held in honor of Dean Hanson, who was a Realtor who had dedicated a big part of his life to the children of the community.

First place was won by the team of Nate Funmaker, Craig Liukko, Bill Stewart, Jury Krajack and Shelly Earl. Second went to Mike Tonge, Shannon Layton, Bert Cabanas, and Ethelene Burgi. Third place was won by Mike Mulligan, S. Mulligan, Paul Spitzer, Billy Spitzer, and Marti Spitzer. Fourth went to Scott Pierce, Steve Ball, Lisa Pierce, Mike Balog, and Gloria Bertoglio. Taking fifth was the squad of Stuart Stroud, Bill Stroud, Michael Stroud, Jack Tanner, and Terry Tanner. Sixth place finishers were Jim Stephens, Tom Maley, Ken Williamson, Sam Jarvis, and Sherrill Burton. Capturing seventh was the team of Scott Wallace, Jim Burgis, Danny Keith, Kyle Riddell, and Sharon Riddell. Eigth went to Joe Keesee, Gary Garner, Larry Suckla, Donna Suckla, and Jim Whatcott. Ninth was won by Rob Yarbrough, Mike DeLong, T.J. Blake, Arlo Robb, and Arlene Curtis.

The placers of the putting contest were Bob Hull (men) and Joanne Kohler (women).

Hole prizes were won by: no. 1 Keith Weiss; no. 2 (no winner given); no. 3 Burt Medder and Lisa Pierce; no. 4 Shelley Earl; no. 5 Lyle Nikerman; no. 6 Paula Lively; no. 7 (no winner given); no. 8 Ronda Higman; no. 9 Bill Steward; no. 10 Jim Whatcott; no. 11 Flav Vanwinkle; no. 12 Bill Steward; no. 13 Ethelene Burgi; no. 14 Steve Skinner; no. 15 Steve Ball; no. 16 Moya Gray and Jim Milligan; no. 17 Ray Burgi; and no. 18 Sherrill Burton.

The Dean Hanson Scholarships were presented to Stacy Tanner and Jared Whitehead. The 2000 Cortez Area Association of Realtors Scholarships were given to Candace Brooke Dunbar, Amber Joi Randolph, Tiffany Lynn Young, Melissa Sue Willbanks, and Amber D. Sanders.

The Cortez Elk Lodgs 1789 Three Person Charity Scramble is set today and Sunday, Sept. 23-24, and Jobs Daughters Sept. 30 which rounds out the season. A few other tournaments may be scheduled, depending on weather conditions.
