Staff Report Swimming is over for the Cortez Leopard Sharks. Several members competed in the annual Colorado Summer Club State Championships. Qualifying were Hannah MacLaren, Michael Neubert, Jessica Millican, Jessie Garbesi, Skyler McCullough, Alyse Neubert, and Kelsey Green. Of those, five of them came away with ribbons and medals. Michael Neubert, competing in the Boys 8-Under, won a ribbon for placing 10th in the 25-yard back stroke in 25.26 seconds. Earlier this summer he competed in the presitigous Colorado 8-Under Festival in Thornton. He is only among a handful of Leopard Sharks to have competed in the meet. Past swimmers who have competed in that event were Scott Mollenkopf (1984), Leslie Guymon (1991), Bryson McCabe (1996), and Katie Millican (1997). Garbesi took home medal for taking fourth in the 100 butterfly with her clocking of 1 minute, 43.25 seconds. MacLaren finished 10th in the 100 back in 1:36.13. Alyse Neubert just missed winning a medal (top six placers) as she placed seventh in 50 back with a time of 43.50 and eighth in 100 back in 1:35.75. Green finished 11th in 100 back in 1:17.58. Katie Millican, 11, competed in the Colorado Stae Division One Junior Olympic Meet whcih was held in Colorado Springs at the United States Air Force Academy Pool. In prelims, she swam a best time of 35.22 in the 50 fly. That lowered her own team record she set earlier in the season. She qualified for the consolation finals and placed 13th. The team was coached by Mark Knox and assisted by Jenni Millican. |
