Motorcross racing riders, fans keep coming out to Wild West Rest Track

A total of 128 motorcycle racers competed at Sunday, Aug. 20, motocross event at the Wild Wild Rest Track, located about a mile east of the Mesa Verde National Park entrance.

"It just keeps growing and growing," Ray McCarty, race organizer, said. "We keep getting more and more entries. And our crowds are getting bigger and bigger."

One more race will be held before closing for the summer season. That event is set for Sept. 3. Action will begin at 10 a.m. with registration taking place starting at 7.

The event was sponsored by High Desert Racing and sanctioned by the American Motorcycle Association.

In the 60A Classification, Zack Gurley of Farmington went wire-to-wire on his Kawaski for the win. Taylor Carlson of Cortez finished third. Another Farmington rider on a Kawaski — Eric Kelly — won the Class 60B competition. Eli Tomac of McElmo Canyon came in second while Adam Nickerson of Dolores placed fourth.

The 125B Amateur Class was won by Chad Ruggles of Bayfield while riding a Yamaha. Justin Dikes of Pagosa Springs captured first on the 125C Novice Class and he won the Schoolboy Class as well. Jesse Montoya of Hesperus finished seventh and Sean Boone and Kevin Fane, both of Dolores, took ninth and 10th, respectively. Randy Rodd of Cortez won the 125CC Beginner Class while riding a Yamaha. Jami Still of Cortez finished sixth, Justin Reed of Mancos placed seventh, Greg Lee of Dolores took eighth, and John Phelps of Cortez ninth.

John Kinney of Durango captured the 80A Class while Mark Graddy of Farmington took first in the 80B Class. Talon Rosencrance of Dolores placed fourth in that event. Bronson Huber of Gallup, N.M., won on a Yamaha in the 80C Class. Damien Herrera of Gamerco, N.M., rode his Suzuki to a win in the 80CC Beginner Class. Krystle Van Dellen of Cortez came in seventh.

Dillon Rosencrance of Dolores went wire-to-wire on his Yamaha in the Mini Quads. Derek Porter of Cortez came in third. Dustin Porter of Cortez won on a Yamaha in the Quads. Jerry Baker of Cortez placed second.

In the PeeWee SuperMini, Coby Meeks of Farmington took first while Eli Tomac came in second. Gurley won the SuperMini 60 Class on a Kawaski. Eli Tomac came in second after starting out in third. Nickerson came in third. Taylor Carlson of Cortez placed sixth. Graddy won the SuperMini I Class on a Suzuki. Talon Rosencrance placed sixth. Huber won the SuperMini II Class on a Yamaha.

Killy Rusk of Durango captured the 50A Class. Corey Adams of Dolores came in second, Keenan Garcia of Cortez third, Reiss Dillon of Mancos placed fourth, and Megan Van Dellen of Cortez sixth. Taylor Smith of Telluride wonthe 50B Class while riding a Honda. Cody Bowen of Mancos placed third.

Ruggles also won the 250B Amateur Class on a Yamaha. John Tomac of McElmo Canyon placed fourth. Ruggles also won the Open B Amateur event and John Tomac placed third. Hugh Phillips of Silverton took first-place honors in the 250C Novice Class on a Suzuki. Charles Hudak of Ridgway captured first in the 250CC Beginner Class.

Scott Kennett of Ridgway rode a Honda to victory in the Open Veteran Class. Jim Broesma of Mancos won (make unknown) the Vintage Class while Mike Petrose II came in second. Adam Juzek of Durango captured first in the Open CC Beginner event on a Suzuki. Rodd placed third, Boone fourth, Reed fifth, Fane sixth, Phelps seventh, and Lee eighth. Dikes took first in the Open C Novice Class on a Suzuki.
