Ohio golfer breezes to Tee Cup title

Cathy Jefferson, a visitor from Ohio, flew in and breezed to the Championship Flight title of the annual Mesa Verde Tee Cup Golf Tournament at Conquistador Golf Course.

The tournament, which saw 104 golfers participating under nearly perfect weather conditions, is hosted by the Cortez Women’s Golf Association.

Jefferson, who has a 3 handicap, shot a 1-over-par 73, to win low gross. Barb Staley of Farmington’s San Juan Country Club, finished second way back with an 82. Sally Miller was third with an 85.

Nancy Chitwood captured low net with a 65 in the flight. Claire Carter fired a 66 and Moya Gray 67.

Lee Wilson took low gross in the First Flight with a 91. Shirley Hanson carded a 95 and Joanne Kohler 96. Donna Suckla won low net honors with a 66. Marti Spitzer was next with a 67 and Jane Davis shot 69.

Tracy Johnson won low gross in the Second Flight with a 93. Maxine Anderson and Jacquelyn Thom tied for second gross with a 103.

Donna Durant and Betty Underwood finished in a tie for low net at 66. Dora Garcia and Mary Hetherington finished in a tie at 68.

Donna Masson won low gross in the Third Flight with a 104. Cindy Lonis came in second with a 110 and Eileen Canode 113.

Marilou Condrey took first net with a 67, Randi Reed and Joan Wessman tied at 72.

Several special events were held. Gray won closest to the pin on hole no. 12, Gerri Deem on no. 7, Harriet Nowotny no. 16, and Helen Jurca no. 3. Gloria Pace was the most accurate driver on hole no. 2, Canode on no. 17, and Sharon White on no. 11. Sally Gardner had the longest putt on no. 5 and Joan Krajack on no. 18. Within group play, the woman with the fewest number of putts won a prize.

The women ended the day with a fashion show and awards luncheon at the Cortez Elks Lodge.

The big week of golf continues as the annual Pinto Bean Golf Classic is coming this all-day this Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 19-20. The course will be closed to public play all weekend.

September, which used to not be a busy month, will be this year. The Dean Hanson Memorial 2000 is set the 9th. The format is a 5-person scramble with two shotgun starts (8 a.m. and 1 p.m.). Each team must have one lady member. Each team can have one "A" player (0-13 handicap) or two "B" players (14-17) with no "A" player. The entry fee is $45 plus green fees and cart. A dinner will be held for all contestants following the tournament. Additional meal tickets are $12. Local realtors and affiliates are sponsoring the annual event which is used to fund a scholarship. Nielsen’s Invitational is slated 16th. Cortez Elks will play 23-24th and Jobs Daughters 30th. The Cortez ladies will be heading to Fairfield-Pagosa for the Ladies Pro-Am there the 11th.

The first Cortez Elks Lodge 1789 Three-Person Charity Scramble will be held Sept. 23-24. The final tournament in the area is the Four Corners Stroke Play Sept. 30-Oct. 1 at Dalton Ranch. The $100 entry fee is all inclusive with green fees and cart for two rounds of golf, plus a banquet dinner. A team auction will be held on Saturday evening. At least one player on a team must be an Elk member. Team format is comprised of A-B-C players and may include women. For more information, phone 565-3557.
