Young cowboys, cowgirls keep rodeo tradition alive

Young cowboys and cowgirls kept the Old West alive by participating in the annual Bob Banks Memorial Children’s Rodeo on Sunday, Aug. 6, at the Montezuma County Fair. The rodeo was held at the American Legion Post 75 Arena this year because the fairgrounds was being used as staging for firefighters during the Bircher Fire at Mesa Verde National Park.

Participants competed in barrel racing, tie-down roping, breakaway roping, pole bending, calf touching, goats, ribbon roping, and team roping.

In Girls 5-Under Barrels, Cydney McHenry of Dolores rounded the Texas Cloverleaf pattern in 20.81 seconds for first place. She had the only qualified time. For the boys, Justin White of Cortez captured first in 31.81 and Levi Noyes of Cortez took second in 39.40.

Taking first in Girls 6-8 Barrels was Kaleigh Kimble of Dolores with a good time of 18.21. Jana Baker of Bayfield came in second in 18.77. Krista Rieb of Cortez took third in 19.09 and Savannah Simmons of Cortez grabbed fourth in 19.74. For the boys, it was Austin Norris of Bayfield who took top honors with a time of 19.02. Cooper Oliver of Blanding, Utah, placed second in 21.99 and Garrett Presnell of Cortez third in 22.86 and Shay LaRue of Cortez fourth in 23.07.

Joetta Lytle of Cortez and Jessica Norris of Cortez finished one, two in the Girls 9-12 Barrels with times of 16.84 and 18.50, respectively, in Girls 9-12 Barrels. Kailee Caughey of Cortez finished third in 23.86 and Kady Meyer of Cortez fourth in 24.63. Lindsey Maez of Cortez won the Girls 13-15 Barrels in 16.56. Elizabeth Hunter of Cortez took second in 17.00 while Brandee Bauer third in 17.36 and Alyssa Redshaw of Ucolo fourth in 18.82.

Lacey Haygood of Cortez captured first in Girls 16-19 Barrels. Kelly Rice of Dove Creek took second in 17.76 and Stephanie Vogel of Cortez third in 18.29 and Mary Hoch of Cortez fourth 18.30.

In Boys 16-19 Tie-Down Roping, David Patcheck of Mancos came in first in 23.41 and Matthew Betts of Cortez second in 30.33.

Hunter took Girls 13-15 Breakaway Roping in 4.29. Lytle won Girls 9-12 Breakaway in 4.77.

C.McHenry won Girls 5-U Poles in 28.70 while Tabor Woosley of Cortez took second in 37.79. White won Boys 5-U Poles in 37.84. In Girls 6-8 Poles, Jana Baker of Bayfield took first in 23.45, Hayley Hensley of Cortez second in 25.12, Rieb third in 25.81 and Bailey Schurr of Cortez fourth in 28.09. Ricky Wilcox of LaSal, Utah, won the Boys 6-8 Poles in 28.12. Presnell came in second in 30.87, Oliver third in 32.75, and T. Baker fourth 33.89.

J. Lytle won the Girls 9-12 Poles title in 22.13. J.Norris placed second in 33.02, Caughey third in 33.97, and K.Meyer fourth in 34.70. Taking first in Boys 9-12 Poles was Cody Meyer of Cortez in 25.95 while Logan Colbert of Mancos took second in 31.94 and Randy Wright of Cortez third in 41.26.

Maez won Girls 13-15 Poles with a clocking of 20.85. Brendee Bauer of Cortez grabbed second in 22.02, Rae Buffington of Cortez placed third in 25.45 and A.Redshaw fourth in 26.91. Marie Hoch won Girls 16-19 Poles in 27.17, Mary Hoch placed second in 27.44 and Haygood third in 28.42.

Patcheck captured first in Boys 16-19 Calf Touching in 6.03. Betts came in second in 7.16, and Jeremy Redshaw of Ucolo took third.

C.McHenry won Girls 5-U Goats in 12.81. Tabor Woosley came in second in 19.43 and Chessie Kimble of Dolores placed third in 40.56. White won for the boys in 21.58 while Lane LaRue came in second in 26.53 and Noyes third in 27.56.

Kimble won Girls 6-8 Goats in 17.39. Tawnee Woosley of Cortez came in second in 17.49. Jana Baker took third in 19.99 while Jordan McHenry of Dolores grabbed fourth in 21.34. In Boys 6-8 Goats, Wilcox captured first in 21.83. T. Baker came in second in 29.16, Shay LaRue third in 30.56, and Presnell fourth in 31.71.

In Girls 9-12 Goats, Joetta Lytle won with a clocking of 14.48. Norris took second in 25.56, K.Meyer third in 39.56, and Caughey fourth in 45.45. C.Meyer won for the boys in 20.54 while Logan Colbert of Mancos placed second in 30.52. Hunter won Girls 13-15 Goats in 10.64. A. Redshaw took second in 11.52, Bauer third in 12.14 and Maez fourth in 12.41. Mary Hoch won Girls 16-19 Goats in 14.28, Marie Hoch placed second in 16.91 and Haygood third in 19.87.

Betts won Boys 16-19 Ribbon Roping in 28.51 while Daniel Russell of Cortez placed second in 28.65. Kyle Rice of Dove Creek won Boys 13-15 Ribbon Roping in 28.46.
