McKee captures CWGA club championship title

Louise McKee won the Cortez Women’s Golf Association Club Championship with a two-day gross score of 165.

The event was held at Conquistador Golf Course July 24-25. A total of 28 women competed in the 36-hole, stroke-play tourney.

Fran Krischenman took honors in the First Flight with a low gross 179. Lanette Candelaria-Mitchell captured first net at 141. Paula Lively was second with a score of 145.

In the Second Flight, Harriet Nowotny was the low gross winner with a 198. Arlene Curtis grabbed low net honors with a 145 and Joanne Kohler came in second with a 147.

Dottie Banks was the low gross winner in the Third Flight with a 204. Vicky Dunham grabbed low net with a 146 and Donna Durant was second with a 148.

On Aug. 1, the CWGA members played Regular Play with 30 participating. Carol Click won low gross with a 95, Kirschenman came in second, two shots off the pace. Betty Underwood won low net with a 67 and Durant second net at 75. Kirschenman made a birdie on hole no. 3. Gobbles were recorded by Betty Underwood and Pat Osburn.

The following night (Aug. 2), the Wednesday Evening Group played Flag Day. Mindy Rosenbaugh took first and Dunham second.

Regular play was the call for the day on July 11 where 27 women competed. There was a tie for first net with scores of 69 between Joan Luhman and Janet Knisley. Shannon Layton won low gross with an 88 and Kirschenman was second with a 94. Layton and Donna Suckla recorded birdies. Gobbles were made by Lively, Pearl Smith, and Layton.

On July 18, 35 women played Regular Play. Kirschenman took first gross with a score of 90. Two women tied for second gross with Moya Gray and Shirley Hanson with 96. Pearl Wiggins and Bobbie Jo Ertel for first net with scores of 72. Birdies were recorded by Hanson and Click. Gloria Bertoglio, Kirschenman, and Eulalia Skinner had gobbles.

A total of 13 women played All Irons on July 19 in the "Ladies of the Evening" Wednesday night group. In Class A, Curtis won with a score of 50 for nine holes. In Class B, Dunham took honors with a score of 62. Banks recorded a gobble on hole no. 5.

Women golfers are reminded that Aug. 8 is the registration deadline for the Mesa Verde Tee Cup Invitational Millennium Shoot Out which will be held Aug. 15. The field is limited to 112 players. For more information, contact the Pro Shop at Conquistador Golf Course at 565-9208.

The CWGA conducts regular and special play events for women on Tuesday mornings and Wednesday evenings from April through September. For more information about the group, contact the Pro Shop.

August always is a busy month at the local golf course. Oilmen from throughout the area will be participating in the Ute Mountain Oil Classic today, Aug. 5. The Cortez Ladies Pro-Am will be held Monday, Aug. 7. The Mesa Verde Tee Cup Invitational is slated Aug. 15. The annual Pinto Bean Golf Classic is set Aug.. 19-20.

September, which normally is not a busy month, will be this year. The Dean Hanson Memorial 2000 is set the 9th. The format is a 5-person scramble with two shotgun starts (8 a.m. and 1 p.m.). Nielsen’s Invitational is slated 16th. Cortez Elks will play 23-24th and Jobs Daughters 30th. The Cortez ladies will be heading to Fairfield-Pagosa for the Ladies Pro-Am there the 11th. The final tournament in the area is the Four Corners Stroke Play Sept. 30-Oct. 1 at Dalton Ranch.

The Dean Hanson 2000 Tournament will have a format of a five-person scramble with two shotgun starts at 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. Each team must have at least one lady member. Each team can have one "A" player (handicap 0-13) or two "B" players (handicap 14-17) with no "A" player.

The entry fee is has been set at $45 plus green fees and cart. A dinner will be held for all contestants following the tourney. Additional meal tickets are available for $12. Local Realtors and affiliates are sponsoring holes which will be used to fund the scholarship. In addition, a putting contest will be held. This contest will be between 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Local businesses are providing door prizes and a vehicle will be provided as a hole-in-one prize on hole no. 7 by Southwest Auto Center.
