Jacobson captures Men's Club Championship title

The annual Cortez Men’s Golf Association’s Club Championship saw 56 players tee it up this past Saturday and Sunday, July 29-30, at Conquistador Golf Course.

When the 36 holes were over, Jack Jacobson had won with a low gross with rounds of 75-75-150 to win the Championship Flight. Nate Funmaker was a distant second with rounds of 78-78-156. Juan Nakai-Tsosie shot 82-78-160, Jim Guest 84-78-162, Shea Sena 85-79-164, and Tony Bills 77-87-164. Guest captured low net honors with scores of 73-67-140 and Mike Fisher took second net at 69-74-143.

Jim Buffington won the Second Flight low gross with rounds of 81-81-162 and Rick Keck shot 85-81-166 for second gross. Chuck Rostrom took low net honors with 69-68-137 while Mike DeLong fired 66-71-137.

Third Flight low gross winner was Dave Owens who fired 88-89-177 and Brad Harrison finished at 89-93-182. Dave Lamke took first net with 71-61-132 and Mike Balog carded 70-72-142.

Tom Bryant breezed to the title in the Senior Flight by shooting 78-76-154. Chuck Kirshenman came in second with rounds of 85-73-158. Allen Davenport shot 61-66-127 and John Gray 70-67-137 for first and second net, respectively.

The ReMax/National Long Drive Championship was held July 17 at the course. Scott Pierce won the Regular Adult Division with a 384-yard drive. Steve Biery knocked the ball 382. In the Senior Division, Kelly McCabe drove the ball 368 and Dean Cunningham finished 10 yards back.

August always is a busy month at the local golf course. Oilmen from throughout the area will be participating in the Ute Mountain Oil Classic this Saturday, Aug. 5. The Cortez Ladies Pro-Am will be held Monday, Aug. 7. The Mesa Verde Tee Cup Invitational is slated Aug. 15. The annual Pinto Bean Golf Classic is set Augh. 19-20.

September, which used to not be a busy month, will be this year. The Dean Hanson Memorial 2000 is set the 9th. The format is a 5-person scramble with two shotgun starts (8 a.m. and 1 p.m.).

Nielsen’s Invitational is slated 16th. Cortez Elks will play 23-24th and Jobs Daughters 30th. The Cortez ladies will be heading to Fairfield-Pagosa for the Ladies Pro-Am there the 11th. The final tournament in the area is the Four Corners Stroke Play Sept. 30-Oct. 1 at Dalton Ranch.
