Leopard Sharks hold own against top swim teams

The Cortez Leopard Sharks held their own against teams from all over Colorado at the annual Durango Invitational Summer Club Swimming Meet.

Not only were the top teams from around the Western Slope at the meet but also teams from the Front Range.

One of the Front Range teams present included a strong team from Estes Park whose swimmers broke several meet records last weekend, June 23-25. In addition, a few teams from Arizona and New Mexico also competed.

Medals were awarded for first-third place and ribbons for fourth-12th.

In the 8-Under Girls age bracket, Haylie Cumpton picked up three ribbons. She captured eighth in both the 50-yard freestyle in 1 minute, 31.20 seconds and 25 back in 32.62. Her 12th place time of 43.09 was in the 25 free.

Jessie Garbesi, competing in the 9-10 Girls bracket, took home ribbons in the 100 butterfly (eighth in 2:19.4) and 50 fly (11th in 1:02.24). She just missed a picking up a ribbon in the 200 Individual Medley by taking 13th in 4:28.60. Garbesi also placed 16th in 100 I.M., 21st in 50 breast stroke, 22nd in 100 breast, 23rd in 200 free, 28th in 50 free, and 36th in 100 free.

Shawndean Hutchison, who competed in the 9-10 Girls division, finished 25th in 200 free, 27th in 100 back, 28th in 100 breast, 34th in 50 breast, 35th in 50 back, 38th in 50 free, and 42nd in 100 free. Hannah Maclaren, also a participant in that age group, took 18th in 50 back, 21st in 100 back, 37th in 50 free, and 38th in 100 free.

Katie Millican, in the 11-12 Girls group, had a good meet. Her best finish was fifth in the 50 back in 41.83. She took sixth place ribbons in both the 100 I.M. in 1:22.18 and 1,500 free in 26:57.69. Millican picked up another ribbon for taking seventh in 100 breast in 1:52.45, eighth in 100 back in 1:39.76, ninth in 100 fly in 1:42.45, 10th in 50 fly in 43.95, and 12th in 100 free in 1:26.83. She also placed 14th in 200 free and 15th in 100 breast.

Jessica Millican, swimming in the 13-14 Girls, won a handful of ribbons. Her best effort came in the 200 back in which finished fourth in 3:43.14. She placed sixth in 200 breast in 3:41.82. She also placed 10th in 100 breast in 1:44.59, 11th in 100 back in 1:41.62, and 12th in 200 I.M. in 3:35.36. She also placed 13th in both the 50 free and 100 free.

Three Senior Girls placed high in several events. Tessa Haukeness won five ribbons. Her best was a fifth place finish in the 100 breast in 1:36.34. She touched sixth in both the 100 back (1:33.85) and the 200 breast (3:31.17). She also took 10th in both the 100 free in 1:18.62 and 50 free in 35.85.

Miranda Hampson placed seventh in 400 free in 7:19.58 and ninth in 100 back in 1:48.41. She just missed getting a ribbon in the 100 breast with a 13th place finish in 100 breast.

Hampson also took 13th in both the 100 breast and 200 free. She finished 16th in 50 free and 19th in 100 free. Amy Green picked up a ribbon for taking sixth with a clocking of 6:57.58 in 400 free. She ended up 13th in 200 I.M. and placed 14th in 100 breast and 18th in 100 free.

Tucker Hansen won two ribbons in the 8-U Boys division. He took eighth in 25 back in 32.13. He also placed 11th in 25 free in 34.93. Skyler McCullough, competing in the Boys 13-14 bracket, won three ribbons. He grabbed eighth in 100 back (1:52.19), seventh in 100 free (1:29.07) and fifth in 50 free (36.79).

July will be a busy a month for the local club. They swam in Delta over the weekend (July 1-2). They will be in Grand Junction for a big meet July 6-9 and then drop down to Montrose for another meet July 14-16. The Western Slope Championships are set for July 21-23 in Montrose and Season Championships in July 28-30 in Fort Collins.
