Ardy Ptolomy turned in an outstanding performance to win this year’s President’s Cup Tournament on Tuesday, June 27, at Conquistador Golf Course. The annual tourney was sponsored by the Cortez Women’s Golf Association.

She had a good round on the front nine but sizzled on the back and turned in a low net 64 to win over field. Ptolomy plays in the Fourth Flight. Needless to say, she easily won her flight as well.

Janet Knisley captured second in the flight with a net 70. Gloria Bertoglio finished as second net with a 73. A total of 11 competed in that flight.

Moya Gray, who happened to finish second overall, won the First Flight with a net 68. Mary Englehart placed second with a 69 and Shannon Layton captured third with a 71. A total of 10 played in that flight.

Donna Suckla was the low net winner in the Second Flight with a 72. Betty Underwood, last year’s President’s Cup winner, and Donna Durrant tied for second net with 74s. Nine competed in that flight.

Kristin Harrison, Dottie Banks, and Stacy Kirks tied for first net with a 72 in the Third Flight. A total of nine participated in that flight.

The tournament was played under partly cloudy conditions through the morning hours but the weather turned windy with some scattered rain drops by the early afternoon. The golf course was in excellent condition despite the lack of rain in the area.

A Closest to the Pin contest was held. Gray was nearest on hole no. 3, Shelly Earl on no. 7, Eulalia Skinner on no. 12, and Banks on no. 16. They received a $10 gift certificate each for merchandise purchased at the Pro Shop.

Looking ahead, the Southwest Auto-A.L. Coors Light Firecracker Golf Tournament will be held a week later than usual, July 8-9. It is usually held the first weekend of July to coincide with the Fourth of July. Two-man teams are needed for this $2000-added event.

The Senior Championship will be held July 15-16. The National Long Drive Championship is set July 17 at Conquistador. Elsewhere, the Pinon Hills Classic (Farmington) is set for July 29-30.

August is a busy month at the local golf course. Oilmen from throughout the area will be participating in the Ute Mountain Oil Classic Aug. 5. The Cortez Ladies Pro-Am will be held Aug. 7. The Mesa Verde Tee Cup and Pinto Bean close the month. In Farmington, the Totah Festival Tournament is slated Aug. 11 at Pinon Hills.

September, which used to not be a busy month, will be this year. The Dean Hanson Memorial is set the 9th. Nielsen’s Invitational is slated 16th. Cortez Elks will play 23-24th and Jobs Daughters 30th. The Cortez ladies will be heading to Fairfield-Pagosa for the Ladies Pro-Am there the 11th. The final tournament in the area is the Four Corners Stroke Play Sept. 30-Oct. 1 at Dalton Ranch.
