Male and female junior golfers from Durango, Montrose, Delta, Grand Junction, Ouray, Pagosa Springs will join their coharts from Cortez at the annual Cortez Junior Invitational Golf Tournament all day today, June 22, at Conquistador Golf Course.

This is one of several stops on a summer junior golf tour of courses throughout the Western Slope. The tourney also is the culmination of three weeks of golf lessons by head pro Micah Rudosky and his staff.

About 60 young golfers will be playing nine or 18 holes, depending on age. The top older ones will shoot in the upper 70s and low 80s. We’re talking some serious golf here.

The Cortez Men’s Golf Association sponsored a Two-Man Golf Tournament Saturday and Sunday, June 17-18, at Conquistador Golf Course.

Dean Cunningham and Jim Bowers captured low gross in the First Flight with rounds of 77-74 for 151. Harold Ehnbom and Jim Guest took first low net with rounds of 62-61-123. Joe Keesee and Rick Keck grabbed second net with 65-63-128.

Pete Loyd and Rob Kirks won low gross in the Second Flight with 78-75-153. Casey Stone and Mike DeLong won low net with 64-64-127. The team of Tom and John Bryant finished second net with 66-63-129.

Doc Frame and Lou George were the low gross winners in the Third Flight by shooting rounds of 74-73-147. Dave Mitchell and Glenn Stewart were the low net winners with 58-62-120. John Gray and Ralph Haynie finished as second net by firing 61-62-123.

The Fourth Flight was interesting. Frank Costa and Ralph Parker won low gross by shooting 82-77-159. Larry Crawford and Fred Snyder won low net with 57-61-118. Star Proffitt and Walt Winburn, and Burt Cabanas and Ray Burgi fired 60-60-120 and 61-59-120, respectively, to tie for second net.

The annual Doug Lancaster Memorial Scramble on June 10 drew a good field of 84 players at Conquistador Golf Course.

A team from Telluride took first place. Chris Christian, Larry Mallard, Ray Greco and Kevin Holbrook shot a 12-under-par 60.

There was a tie for second. The foursome of Jim Stephens, Tom Maley, Ken Williamson and Sam Jarvis tied the team of Curtis Batchelder, Glenn Stewart, David Scates, and Shannon Layton and the squad of Steve Torres, Keith Weiss, Steve Bell, and Flav Van Winkle and the team of Pete Loyd, Rob Kirks, Dave Fleming, and Stacy Kirks. They all shot 62.

The richest tournament in the area, the $10,000-plus San Juan Open, will be held June 19-25 at San Juan Country Club in Farmington.

Looking ahead, the Southwest Auto-A.L. Coors Light Firecracker Golf Tournament will be held a week later than usual, July 8-9. It is usually held the first weekend of July to coincide with the Fourth of July. Two-man teams are needed for this $2000-added event.

The Senior Championship will be held July 15-16. The National Long Drive Championship is set July 17 at Conquistador. Elsewhere, the Pinon Hills Classic (Farmington) is set for July 29-30.

August is a busy month at the local golf course. Oilmen from throughout the area will be participating in the Ute Mountain Oil Classic Aug. 5. The Cortez Ladies Pro-Am will be held Aug. 7. The Mesa Verde Tee Cup and Pinto Bean close the month. In Farmington, the Totah Festival Tournament is slated Aug. 11 at Pinon Hills.

September, which used to not be a busy month, will be this year. The Dean Hanson Memorial is set the 9th. Nielsen’s Invitational is slated 16th. Cortez Elks will play 23-24th and Jobs Daughters 30th. The Cortez ladies will be heading to Fairfield-Pagosa for the Ladies Pro-Am there the 11th. The final tournament in the area is the Four Corners Stroke Play Sept. 30-Oct. 1 at Dalton Ranch.

The CMGA Club Championship still does not have a final date, according to the schedule. The Mancos Days Golf Tournament also has not been finalized. Several other organizations who usually sponsor tournaments have not finalized their plans as well. Open dates are filling up fast, according to golf course personnel.
