There are several coaching position and teaching positions to go along with some of those spots for the coming 2000-2001 school year at Montezuma-Cortez High School.

The school is currently looking for a girls head basketball coach, a girls head softball coach, a girls head soccer coach, a boys head baseball coach, and a head boys tennis coach.

Phil Baca, head girls basketball coach for the past two years, did not have his teaching and coaching renewed during the May meeting of the Re-1 School Board. He appealed to the board during Tuesday night’s, June 6, board meeting but no action was taken (see related story, Page One).

Barb Cullington turned in her resignation after a two-year stint as head girls soccer coach following the season which ended in April. Ted Williams resigned as head softball coach at the conclusion of last season. Jeff Bollinger, head baseball for the past two seasons and head boys tennis coach last fall, also did not have his contract renewed.

"Those positions are presently open," MCHS Athletic Director Brad Jones said Wednesday morning, June 7. "We are currently sifting through applications of viable candidates. For some of these positions, we do not have a plethora of candidates. We do have some teaching positions open which we are hoping to match with prospective head coaches. We have some English positions, a couple social studies positions, and a physical education position open. We would at least like to fill one or two of those with teachers."

Jones said the school also is looking for some assistants as well.

"Right now we need a couple baseball assistants, two football assistants, two softball assistants, and a soccer assistant (both boys and girls)," Jones added.

All those people interested who want to coach can phone the high school at 565-3722 or the Re-1 Administration at 565-7282 for more details or to get an application.

MCHS recently hired Todd Star to replace Jim Schulz as head boys soccer coach and also hired Karl McGee to replace Dick Geddes who resigned to take the head football job at Liberty High School near Colorado Springs.

On a side note, the two girls basketball camps plus the girls basketball summer basketball tournament will likely not take place because of the recent developments concerning Baca.

The first camp was set to begin this Monday, June 12 and end June 15 for girls in grades 7-12. The second camp for girls in grades 3-8 was scheduled to take place June 19-22.

Baca was going to offer two girls basketball camps this summer.

Baca had set up those camps on his own. They are not school-sponsored activities, according to Jones.

The summer Cortez girls basketball tournament was will not be held as scheduled. It was slated for this Friday and Saturday, June 9-10, in Ron Wright Memorial Gym. It has been officially cancelled, according to Jones.

In other coaching developments, Dolores County is still looking for a head boys basketball coach and a head volleyball coach, according to DCHS Principal and Athletic Director Steve Baroch.

Mancos Middle School has two coaching positions open, according to Athletic Director Kevin Dimmick.

He reported coaches are needed for football and volleyball. For more information, phone Dimmick at 533-7746 or 882-7020.
