A total of 113 motorcycle riders jumped over humps and zoomed up hills at the second Mesa Verde Motocross of the season on Sunday, June 4, at the Wild Wild Rest Track.

"It was good show," race promoter Ray McCarty said. "We had racers from Las Vegas, Nev., a lot from Utah, some from Arizona and New Mexico, and several from all over Colorado. I was certainly pleased."

The only thing that was disappointing about the day was the effort to keep the dust down. There are simply no water trucks to be found in the area because of all the forest fires in New Mexico, Arizona and Utah.

The event was sponsored by High Desert Racing Club and sanctioned by the American Motorcycle Association.

Robert Settles of Alpine, Ariz., won the Open A Pro division by default. He did finish the race on his Kawaski. However, Mike Chase of Grand Junction took the early lead but did not finish. Settles also won the 125 A Pro class, although he was the only rider. He also took the title in the 250 A Pro classification while Chase finished second.

John Tomac of Cortez, a professional mountain bike rider, won from start to finish while riding his Yamaha in the Open Vet division. Robb Rusk of Durango came in second and Rex Halepeska of Albuquerque finished in third place. Rodney Clark of Farmington was the only competitor in the Open A Amateur division. Cody Boyd of Aztec, N.M., won the Open C Novice division. Nick Chavez of Pagosa Springs started in the lead but finished second. Derek Canelarin of Farmington won the Open CC Beginner bracket while riding his Honda. Canelarin also won the 250 CC Beginner as well. Kevin Fane and Greg Lee, both of Dolores, finished second and third, respectively.

In the 80A division, Billy Swapp of Durango took first on his Yamaha. He led from start to finish. Swapp also came in second in the 125 B Amateur class. Swapp also won the SuperMini I on a Yamaha.

In the 125 B Amateur, Paul Campbell of Albuquerque rode his Suzuki to a win. Champbell also won the 250 B Amateur. Nick Chavez of Pagosa took the lead and never let go in the 125 C Novice class. Cody Boyd of Aztec came in second while Justin Dikes of Pagosa and Jesse Montoya of Hesperus placed third and fourth. In the 125 CC Beginner class, Jordan Rae and Rory Bissell, both of Pagosa, captured first and second. Travis Olson of Mancos came in third while Jami Still of Cortez placed fourth, Lee fifth, and Reed sixth.

The Mini Quads was an interesting race. Cheyanne Dennison of Cortez took the early lead and raced around without giving up the lead on her Yamaha. Dayton Wilson of Mancos placed second. Simonson took third while Rosencrance placed fourth. Ron Higman of Cortez, Derek Porter of Cortez, and Tyrun Harris of Lewis came in sixth through eighth place.

Killy Rusk of Durango won the 50A class. Chretien Padilla of Farmington raced around the course in first but dropped all the way to fifth and then came back and took second. Corey Adams of Dolores, Tyler Underwood, also of Dolores, and Keenan Garcia of Cortez finished third, fourth, and fifth, respectively.

Taylor Smith of Telluride won the 50 B division. Dalton Hamer of Durango came in second and Cody Bowen of Mancos third. Zack Gurley of Farmington and Eric Kelly, also of Farmington, rode Kawasakis to first and second in the SuperMini 60 class. Gurley also won the 60 A division as well. Kelly won the 60 B class.
