DC players dominate All-SJL ball team

May 23, 2000

As expected, Dolores County High School dominated the San Juan League All-Conference Baseball Team.

The Bulldogs breezed to the SJL title with an 8-1 record and finished the second at 17-5 after advancing to the Class 2A District Tournament in Alamosa before being eliminated from further post-season play. The Mustangs from Nucla also received plenty of notice as well.

Senior Ron Ernst and junior Jason Moch of Nucla were chosen the pitchers. Ernst, incidentally, wrestled his first three years of eligibility and placed at state as a junior.

Going around the horn, junior Mike Epright of Nucla was named the first baseman, junior Chris Kail of DCHS at second, senior Justin Wyatt of DCHS at short stop, and junior Brian Hibbert of Nucla at third base.

Dove Creek’s Terence Gardner was named the elite team’s catcher.

Outfielders were sophomore Keith Pierce and senior Jade Huskey, both of Dolores County, and senior Bart Reems of Nucla.

The only Dolores player chosen was sophomore Colin Zion was the designated hitter. Junior Josh Hainey of Nucla was chosen the utility player.

There is no honorable mention all-conference team.

Coach of the Year honors went to Ken Soper of DCHS.
