May 4, 2000 BY JIM THOMAS For a while there it looked like no one was going to show up. And the weather was not cooperating as it was cold and windy. However, just after 7 a.m. Sunday, April 28, more than 100 motorcycle riders showed up and entered the first Mesa Verde Motocross show of the season at the Wild Wild Rest track. "I was worried," race organizer Ray McCarty said. "At 7 a.m. we only had one rider show up. It was cold and windy and it looked like a winter-like storm was going to come in. And then suddenly, the weather cleared up and we saw a long line of riders wanting to sign up. It turned out to be a great day." McCarty said they liked the new starting pad and, "all the improvements we made on the track. I didn’t hear anyone grumbling." A total 95 riders from all over the area showed up, according to McCarty. And conservatively, he reported the spectator attendance was more than 2,500. Two area riders placed in the 125B Amateur Class. Billy Swapp of Durango came in first riding his Yamaha and Rodney Clark of Farmington, N.M., finished second on his Suzuki. In the 125C Novice Class, Kevin Fane of Dolores came in fifth on his Yamaha and Sean Boone, also of Dolores, followed him riding his Yamaha. Jesse Montoya of Hesperus placed third on his Honda. Nick Chavez of Pagosa Springs captured the title in the Open C Novice on a Yamaha. Fane of Dolores won the Open CC Beginner on a Yamaha.
