May 4, 2000 BY JIM THOMAS AZTEC, N.M. — The area prep track and field team members are putting the polish on their respective events. The Bears, the Bulldogs, and the Blue Jays will join Telluride, Norwood and Nucla at the San Juan League Track and Field Championships this Saturday, May 6, at Panther Stadium in Cortez. The Panthers will compete at the rugged Cheyenne Mountain Invitational in Colorado Springs. The San Juan League meet is not a State qualifying meet but the Cheyenne Invitational is a qualifying meet. Track powerhouse Mullen plus other Front Range schools such as Sierra, host Cheyenne Mountain, and many other Colorado Springs, Denver, and Pueblo area schools. "This is a huge meet," MCHS girls head coach Doug Anderson said. "There will be 10 4A and 10 5A schools there. I don’t know how well we will do, but it should be enlightening. We are still young and we haven’t gotten any older. But their times are coming down and that’s all we ask for." MCHS boys head coach Bob Archibeque said it will be a good chance to see what’s on the other side of the mountain. "This is our only time we get to see athletes from the Front Range. This gives us a good idea of what we will be facing at State in a couple more weeks," he commented. As for the San Juan League Meet, Mancos coach Tim Dunham said it will be a nice change in that his team will be able to compete against schools at Mancos’ own level. "It will be nice to compete in track meet against schools our level," Mancos head coach Tim Dunham said. "This will be a good meet before Regionals. Unfortunately, this will not be a State qualifying meet. We will basically be seeing who is the best in our league. Since this is our last meet, I will use as many kids as possible. I want to give the younger ones a shot. "They are coming along. I see improvement from week to week and that’s all you can ask of them. We’re getting them ready for Regionals." These two track meets are the final tuneups for Regionals, set for May 12-13 at Stocker Stadium in Grand Junction. The top three individual placers at that meet automatically qualify for State, set May 19-20.
