A large high-pressure system has moved into the Four Corners area bringing with it clear skies and warmer-than-normal temperatures. But it’s not time to put away the snowboards and skis just yet. There are still a few more days to hit the slopes.

Telluride Ski Area will close Sunday, April 9. Wolf Creek also is scheduled to close that April 23 (Easter Day), although it is trying to work out plans to stay open longer. However, Purgatory Resort will be open through the end of the month.

Skiing is excellent right now in Southwestern Colorado.

Wolf Creek Ski Area from the last storm which moved through the area last week, March 30-April 1, brought plenty of snowfall. The area received a whopping 30 inches. It now reports 110 inches of all natural snowpack at the summit and 103 inches at midway. Ski conditions are excellent on powder and packed powder. All lifts are operating, including the new high-speed quad. Waterfall, Alberta Peak, and Knife Ridge were open but subject to closure based on weather conditions.

Telluride Ski and Golf Company reported the ski area received 17 inches of new snow from the storm. The area has a 76-inch base at the top of the mountain and 74 inches at mid-mountain. All 12 lifts are operating with 100 percent of the mountain is open. Skiing is rated as excellent on powder and packed powder.

It's time to Surf the Rockies, the annual promotion is continuing at Telluride. The event is filled with skiing and snowboarding competitions, cardboard derby races, hula contests, bikini contests, beach parties, and special lift ticket prices. There are many events planned for this weekend.

Purgatory Resort also reports received a foot of new snow from the storm, although it swirled around it somewhat. The area reports a base of 67 inches on man-made and natural snow at mid-mountain. Conditions are excellent powder and packed powder. Most of the mountain is open with eight of 11 lifts operating.

The Adaptive Sports Association plans to keep its doors open until April 30, the last day of skiing at the resort.

"We want the community to know that we are still open for business and as long as the conditions warrant it, we will continue to take students," Tim Papi, program director, said.

The National Weather Service is predicting clear to partly cloudy skies through this weekend with no new snow forecast.
