The Dolores High School varsity girls basketball team opened the Class 2A San Juan Basin League season with a crushing 69-9 defeat of Norwood this past Saturday, Jan. 12, at DHS Gym.

The Bears, who improved to 1-0 in league and 7-2 overall, moved out to a 16-0 following the first quarter of play. They outscored the Mavericks 25-3 in the second to hold a commanding 41-3 advantage at the intermission. In the second half, the Bears outscored Norwood 16-4 in the third and 12-2 in fourth quarter.

Dolores got balanced scoring in the game. Jennifer Trevillian and Tracy Everett both scored 16. McKenzie Reed and Ashley Reed dropped in 12 each. McKenzie Reed had a double double as she also pulled down 10 rebounds. Ashley Reed almost performed the same trick, but had nine boards. Trevillian stole the ball seven times and dished out six assists.

DHS defeated Class 3A Ignacio 54-51 as tune-up just before league play. The Bobcats gave the Bears all they could handle. Dolores led 15-13 at the end of the first quarter and led 28-26 at the break. Both teams had problems putting points in the board in the third period. Ignacio scored six and Dolores only four. However, both teams got back into full offensive mode in the fourth. Dolores outscored Ignacio 22-19.

Trevillian and Tracy Everett both finished with 11 points. Joni Everett chipped in 9 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.

On a downside, Dolores turned the ball over 30 times.

Bulldog Memorial Gym is condemned and not suitable for large number of basketball fans. The Bears will then return home on Saturday, Jan. 26, to host Telluride for another league contest. Tip-off for the girls should start about 4:30 p.m.

Mancos will host Nucla for a league contest on Friday in the Mancos Performance Center. The Blue Jays will visit Norwood on Saturday.
