The post-season honors are finally coming for the high school wrestling season in Colorado.

Cole Allison, a 160-pound undefeated (41-0) Class 4A State champion from Montezuma-Cortez High School, was named All-Colorado by several publications recently. He was chosen All-Colorado by The Denver Post, The Rocky Mountain News, and by Varsity Online.

Allison, a junior, will join some of the top wrestlers from Colorado at the National Scholastic Duals Wrestling Tournament in Battle Creek, Mich., this Friday and Saturday, April 7-8. He flew to Denver to join the rest of the contingent from the state and then left today for Battle Creek. He will compete all day Friday in pool play for seeding purposes and then compete in bracket 16-player double-elimination tournament all day on Saturday.

This is the second year of the tournament, sponsored by the National Wrestling Coaches Association. This is a chance for Allison to strut his stuff in front of college coaches from around the country.

Joining Allison on Team Colorado will be Chuck Pipher from Hotchkiss, Greg Maestas of Grandview, Doug Duell of Burlington, Tom Clum of Pomona, Dusty Hoffschneider of Columbine, Ben Cherrington of Middle Park, Ben Menzor of Grandview, Chris Nissen of Standley Lake, Ty Gray of Olathe, Gary Dack of Pomona, Jared Deaguero of Adams City, Jeff Swanson of Centaurus, Lewis Delponte of Arapahoe, Alan Palmer of Lamar, and Josh Ingram of Broomfield. The Colorado team features nine state champions, one runner-up, and one fourth-place finisher from the State Wrestling Championships.

"I think most of the kids will get four or five matches," MCHS head coach Mike Allison said. "There are some outstanding wrestlers going to this tournament. This is a heck of a team. I called some coaches and checked this meet out. Last year they said they didn’t like it but this year more thought has gone into it and each state is sending their best wrestlers. Colorado will be represented very, very well."

The Denver Post All-Colorado Team includes Erik Ortega of Canon City, Ray Gonzales of Fort Lupton, Clum, Alfonso Aragon of Greeley Central, Cherrington, Leister Bowling of Lyons, Matt Brown of Berthoud, Joe Kingry of Green Mountain, Andrew Wilkins of Crowley County, Allison, E.K. Waldhaus of Pueblo South, Jeff Rusher of Wray, Hoffschneider, and Ryan Martinez of Greeley West. Clum was named Wrestler of the Year and Tom Beeson of Pomona Coach of the Year.

Allison has been working hard on the mats and in the weight room since he captured the State title in mid-February, according to coach Allison. He has been doing a lot of freestyle and Greco in order to get ready for USA Wrestling later this spring and early summer.

The Rocky Mountain and Varsity Online had almost the identical lineup except both groups choose Deaguero, Brown, and Marques Harris of Grand Junction High.

"This is a tremendous honor for Cole to be recognized by all these publications," coach Allison said about his wrestler who also happens to be his son. Young Allison has already been drawing a lot of interest from colleges across the country. Not only is he a good wrestler but he’s an excellent student as well. The recruiting wars for him will get under way intensely early next fall.

The Denver Post also named Justin Peters, 152-pound state runner up, and Stephen Snyder, heavyweight state runner up, to the Second Team.
