Jan. 17, 2001 The first-ever Special Olympics Fun Day was held recently in Farmington. Special athletes from Cortez and Farmington participated in a wide variety of activities. Three basketball games were held and all the athletes "did a wonderful job," according to Special Olympics volunteer Diane Fields. The Farmington hosts put on a meal for the children. The two teams will play again in Cortez on Feb. 10 in Durango. The Durango team also will compete. "Special Olympics is truly a wonderful world wide organization that goes beyond the individual state boundaries and joins all athletes in participating in the sports they do best," Fields said. "We all hope to be sharing more fund days with our neighboring states." Fields said she wanted to thank Debra Lisenbee and all the coaches for all their work. She said she wanted to thank Marcy and Irene Aldaz, Ray and Vickey Vialpando, Lynn Buchanan, and Theresa Reynolds. The Cortez Special Olympians participating were Jacob Milligan, Lara Gatewood, Joshua Aldaz, Heather Fields, Dustin Yoho, Cory McWilliams, Kiri Buchanan, Dylan Kuhn, Jamie Traught, Kay Polich, Breanna Reynolds, and Christina Aldaz. |
