Jan. 17, 2001

STAFF REPORT

Class 2A Dolores girls varsity basketball team continues to be impressive as they racked up another win by dropping a good Class 3A Ignacio team 54-51 Tuesday night, Jan. 15, at Ignacio.

Dolores jumped all over the Bobcats early in the game by taking a 13-4 lead early in the first quarter. But Ignacio came storming back and outscored Dolores 11-2 the rest of the period, mostly converting DHS turnovers into baskets. Dolores led 15-13 when the period ended.

Ignacio led briefly very early in the second quarter but Dolores came back. IHS played well at times and not at other times. Dolores played well through much of the rest of the game. However, the Bobcats had problems early in the third period but came back strong at the end when Katie Whiteskunk, who had already nailed one three banged in three more. Raegena Thompson, one of IHS’s better players, was held to only 7 points, although she did knock down a three in the third as well.

The Bears, though, scored at least a deuce every time IHS hit a three. And then Joni Everett, who finished with 13 points, and Amanda Cross, who tallied 8, both drilled home scores throughout the fourth quarter. Everett scored most of her points from the charity stripe while Cross made her’s under the basket.

Stephanie Rivera, who suffered early foul trouble, finished with 11 for IHS.

DHS girls drilled Shiprock JVs in a makeup game last week. They crushed Shiprock 77-47. Sarah Nielson scored a season-high 20 points while Jennifer Trevillian gunned in 16 and Cross 8.

Dolores High School boys basketball team split nonconference games this past weekend. They defeated Bayfield 51-40 on Friday night, Jan. 11, at home and then lost a close 54-52 decision to Durango JVs on Saturday, Jan. 12.

"We got slowed down by Bayfield’s zone," DHS boys head coach Scott Story reported. "We finally got up by five or six and then we pulled it away with free throws in the end."

Waylon Bennett and Aeson Reed both popped in 14 apiece for the winners.

The Bears lost a close game at Durango when it missed quite a few free throws. Story said the team connected only 13 of 27 tries.

Despite the loss, Dolores got balanced scoring. Cullen Zion led all scorers with 17 while Kevin Fane chipped in 11 and Reed pulled off a double double by scoring 10 and grabbing 10 rebounds.

"Our downfall was poor free throw shooting and shooting in general. We still had trouble with zone defenses. We will work on that as we get ready for league," he commented.

The Bear girls and boys host Norwood in a Clas 2A San Juan Basin League contests beginning around 4:45 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19.

DCHS boys played in Cortez against Farmington High JVs Tuesday and lost by 14 points, but no results were called in after calls were made to the school. DCHS boys are riding a four-game losing streak. They were defeated last Saturday, Jan. 12, by Ignacio 69-40. In that game, Brandon Neely and Keith Pierce each scored 12.

The Bulldog boys and girls return to action late Saturday afternoon when they visit Mancos for the opening league game for those teams.

Montezuma-Cortez High School boys and girls were idle this past weekend. Both Panther teams will return to action this Friday (6 p.m.) and Saturday (noon) when they host Fruita-Monument and Central of Grand Junction for Southwest League play.
