Dates are changing for some area golf tournaments

Changes abound for the 2000 Conquistador Golf Course and Four Corners tournament schedules which were released today, March 30.

Dates for certain tournaments which area golfers have become accostomed have changed. The Cortez Women’s Golf Association has the most changes.

For instance, the Ladies Club Championship which is normally held in mid-September will be held much earlier. This year it is scheduled for July 24-25. The President’s Cup, a low net only tourney, will be held June 27, about a month earlier than normal. However, the annual Mesa Verde Tee Cup Invitational will be held Aug. 15, only a few days before the annual Pinto Bean Golf Classic, set Aug. 19-20.

The Cortez Men’s Pro-Am will get the season under way April 17. Cortez normally has the first Ladies-Pro event of the season. But this year, the first Ladies-Pro will be April 24 at Riverview Golf Course in Kirtland, N.M.

Golf course personnel did announce that aerification will take place April 27-28. Golfers should be patient until the plugs heal.

The Ice Breaker, a tourney sponsored by the Cortez Men’s Golf Association, will be held May 6-7. The San Juan Lady-Pro will be held May 15. San Juan Country Club (Farmington, N.M.) has not hosted a Lady-Pro tourney in quite a few years, especially not this early.

June is always a busy time at Conquistador. Guys and Dolls will held the first weekend, 3-4 at Conquistador. The Cortez ladies will travel to Durango to compete in the Dalton Ranch Pro-Lady on the 5th. This event is usually held towards the end of the season in September. The Doug Lancaster Memorial is set for the 10th. The Safety Protection (safe pro) is slated for the 17th. The Fireman’s Golf Tournament is slated the 19th. The annual Cortez Junior Golf Classic is set for the 22nd. The CMGA Best Ball is set for 24-25th of the month.

Elsewhere during June. The Navajo Trails Open is set for 15-18. The richest tournament in the area, the $10,000-plus San Juan Open, will be held 19-25 at San Juan Country Club.

The Coors Light Firecracker Golf Tournament will be held a week later than usual, July 8-9. It is usually held the first weekend of July to coincide with the Fourth of July. The Senior Championship will be held July 15-16. The National Long Drive Championship is set July 17 at Conquistador. Elsewhere, the Pinon Hills Classic (Farmington) is set for July 29-30.

Oilmen from throughout the area will be participating in the Ute Mountain Oil Classic Aug. 5. The Cortez Ladies Pro-Am will be held Aug. 7. The Mesa Verde Tee Cup and Pinto Bean close the month. In Farmington, the Totah Festival Tournament is slated Aug. 11 at Pinon Hills.

September, which used to not be a busy month, will be this year. The Dean Hanson Memorial is set the 9th. Nielsen’s Invitational is slated 16th. Cortez Elks will play 23-24th and Jobs Daughters 30th. The Cortez ladies will be heading to Fairfield-Pagosa for the Ladies Pro-Am there the 11th. The final tournament in the area is the Four Corners Stroke Play Sept. 30-Oct. 1 at Dalton Ranch.

The CMGA Club Championship still does not have a final date, according to the schedule. The Mancos Days Golf Tournament also has not been finalized. Several other organizations who usually sponsor tournaments have not finalized their plans as well. Open dates are filling up fast, according to golf course personnel.
