March 16, 2000 Journal Staff Report As expected, the Dolores High School girls dominated the 1999-2000 San Juan League All-Conference Girls Basketball Team. The Bears, who finished the Class 2A State Basketball Tournament in third place and had a 24-1 record, had three First Team members. Seniors Brianna Hanson, Ruthie Martin, and Tiffany Boone were chosen by league coaches. The others chosen to the First Team are senior Kristin Paxton of Mancos and senior Robin Williams of Nucla. Paxton helped the Blue Jays to a Regional Tournament appearance. Tegan Brown, another Dolores senior, was chosen Second Team All-Conference. She was joined by junior Cassidy Haught of Norwood, senior Randee Reider of Mancos, freshman Chelsea Padilla of Telluride, and sophomore Rachael Hightower of Dolores County. Honorable Mention members picked include sophomore Sydney Melzer of Telluride, junior Kerri Morgan of Mancos, sophomore Cheicy Boss of Nucla, sophomore Brianne Dillon of Nucla, freshman Nicki Greer of Nucla, and junior Lancie Marolf of Norwood. It should also come as no surprise that Greg Buffington of Dolores was named Coach of the Year. Juniors dominated the boys’ First Team. They include Chris Been of Nucla, Chris Robuck of Nucla, and Terence Gardner of Dolores County. The seniors on the team are Cole McClure of Telluride and Adam Priestly of Norwood. Gardner helped the Bulldogs to their first appearance at Regionals in more than a decade. Chosen to the Second Team are junior Mike Epright of Nucla, senior Justin Wyatt of Dolores County, sophomore Keith Pierce of Dolores County, senior Gary Baker of Mancos, junior Justin Schmitt of Dolores, and senior Kevin Herron of Norwood. Levi Frye, a senior from Dolores, was chosen Honorable Mention. Junior Josh Hainey of Nucla, and Telluride juniors Justin Ludwig and Spencer Stern joined Frye on the list. There was a tie in the voting for Coach of the Year honors. Scott Crawford, a first-year coach from Dove Creek, and Eric Gustafson from Telluride were chosen Co-Coaches of the Year. |
