Cortez Special Olympics snowshoe team member Eric Garcia will represent Colorado at the Pre-World Winter Games in Anchorage, Alaska, later next month after finished first in both the 50-meter and 100-meter events at recently-held Southwest Regional Winter Olympic Games which was held at Purgatory Resort.

The team did extremely well at the competition, according to the coaches. They will now be heading to compete at the Colorado Winter Olympics at Copper Mountain. Making the trip will be Jacob Milligan, Mike Hall, Garcia, Jennifer Romero, Dominic Vasquez, and Jim Carton.

Milligan will be participating in the 500-meter race and 1-kilometer unified race and the 1K unified relay. He came in first in all of these events at regionals. Hall will be running in the 300-meter and 1K races and the 1K unified race. He came in first and second at regionals in his events.

Romero will compete in the 100-meter race. She placed second behind Garcia at regionals. Vasquez and Carton are members of the 1K unified relay team.

The team members said they wanted to thank Wendy’s Restaurant of Cortez. Wendy’s supplied hot bowls of chili for the athletes during all of their practice sessions.
