Three Panthers chosen for statewide honors

Lindsay Waggoner, a senior middle hitter, at Montezuma-Cortez High School was chosen First Team All-State Volleyball (Class 4A) by The Denver Post, the state’s leading newspaper.

Waggoner had an average of 3.1 kills per game. She averaged 3.1 digs per game. On the season she made 70 blocks. A good server, she made 25 aces. She was also chosen Colorado Coaches Association All-State.

Annie Mortensen, a senior setter, and Casey Bauer, a sophomore outside hitter, were named All-State Honorable Mention.

Waggoner, Mortensen, and Bauer helped the Panthers to a school record 25-4 overall mark and a tie for third place at the Class 4A State Volleyball Championships. The Panthers also won the regular-season Southwest League title for the second time in three years.

Lindy Mortensen was named Class 4A Coach of the Year by the newspaper.

Mortensen and Waggoner will play in the Colorado High School Coaches Association Volleyball All-State Game (3-5A) June 13 in Butler Hancock Gym at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley. Mortensen and Waggoner were chosen First Team All-Conference as well a few weeks ago.

Here is the complete list: Mandy Forest (Pagosa Springs), Lyndsey Buderus (Roosevelt), Jennifer Karas (Middle Park), Moreen Baylis (Lutheran), Jen Harvey (Kent Denver), Stephanie Alles (Platte Valley), Jennifer Miller (Platte Valley), Hilary Anderson (Brush), Sarah Lively (Manitou Springs), Meghan Eaton (St. Mary’s), Lisa Bolan (Manitou Springs), Devon Widner (Rangley), Valentine Opetai (Sand Creek), Alicia Herman (Lewis-Palmer), Jennifer Russel (Summit), Andrea Turner (ThunderRidge), Mortensen and Waggoner (Montezuma-Cortez), Katie Mathews (Fort Morgan), Michelle McBurney (Berthoud), Mallory Ruest (Steamboat Springs), Mandy Becker (Rocky Mountain), Evan Unrau (Rocky Mountain), and Logan Pierce (Durango).

The coach for the Red Team is Mortensen (MCHS) and the coach for the Blue Team is Lori Williamdson (Platte Valley).

Bauer, Mortensen, and Waggoner have now changed courts and uniforms. They are currrently starting for the 4-2 Panther girls varsity basketball team.
