The honors keep on rolling in for members of the Montezuma-Cortez High School varsity volleyball team.

Annie Mortensen and Lindsay Waggoner, both seniors, were chosen First Team All-Southwest League All-Conference. The two girls were earlier chosen to the Colorado Coaches of Girls’ Sports/Spalding All-State Volleyball Game.

Mortensen, a setter, averaged 9.6 assists per game and 3.2 digs. She had a serving percentage of 98.6. A good student, her grade point average is 3.8.

Waggoner, a middle hitter, had 70 blocks on the season. She recorded 25 aces and she averaged 3.1 kills and 3.1 digs per outing. She also is an excellent student with a 4.0 GPA.

Joining them on the elite team were senior outside hitter Logan Pierce of Durango, senior outside hitter Keri Willard of Grand Junction Central, senior setter Kristiana Brack of Durango, and senior middle hitter Val Manger of Fruita-Monument.

Two underclassmen from Cortez made Second Team All-Conference. They were sophomore outside hitter Casey Bauer, and freshman outside hitter Stefanie Allison. Bauer averaged 3.2 kills per game and had 55 blocks on the season. A good student, she has a GPA of 3.6. Allison averaged 3.1 kills and 2.8 digs per contest. Also a good student, she has a 4.0 GPA.

Joining them were junior outside hitter Leah Jappe of Grand Junction High, junior outside hitter Kacey Keenon of Palisade, senior outside hitter Candace Charles of Montrose, and junior middle hitter Katie Marshall of Durango.

But that wasn’t the only honor being passed around. MCHS head coach Lindy Mortensen has been chosen Coach of the Year. She guided the Panthers to a 25-4 record and a tie for third place (with Berthoud) in the Class 4A Volleyball Tournament which was held Nov. 12-13 at Denver University. The four-year head coach has an outstanding record of 74-25. She was a CCGS All-State coach and was named Coach of the Year in 1997.
