Dolores, Mancos dominate all-conference squads

The 1999 San Juan League All-Conference Teams were announced today, Nov. 18, and it comes as no surprise that Dolores and Mancos players dominate the elite lists.

Taking First Team honors were Shelly Rhodes and Ruthie Martin of Dolores, Melissa Keller and Randee Reider of Mancos, Dakota Smith of Nucla, and Cassidy Haught of Norwood.

The Second Team also had two Dolores and two Mancos players listed as well. April LeBlanc and Brianna Hanson of Dolores, Erica Russell and Kristin Paxton of Mancos, plus Cassie Hart and Kellie Hart of Telluride.

Garnering Honorable Mention were Chelsey Padilla of Telluride, Lancie Marolf of Norwood, Dana Hammond and Shelane Whren of Nucla, and Amber Randolph of Dolores County.

Coach of the Year was Joye McHenry of Dolores.

The Bears breezed to the San Juan League regular-season title. They came in second to Mancos at the District III Tournament and then captured the Region C title earning a berth at the Class 2A State Volleyball Tournament at Denver University held last weekend. Dolores struggled at State, though, losing all three matches in pool play. They still finished with a sparkling 24-5 overall record.

The Blue Jays, who came in second during the regular season, had a good season under coach Bill Tourjee. The Jays had a senior-dominated team and finished 12-2 for the regular season. The finished 17-4 overall.
