Panther homecoming filled with events

Oct. 5, 1999

By Jim Thomas

The 1999 Montezuma-Cortez High School Homecoming football game will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 8, against Kirtland-Central High School (Kirtland, N.M.) at Panther Stadium.

The Panthers, 1-3 overall, were idle last weekend.

"They always have a good football team," MCHS head coach Dick Geddes said. "I understand one of their better runners, Jonah Foutz, has transferred but they always seem to have good backs. They are big across the front line. We will have to be ready to play if we are going to win."

The theme this year is, "It's a Fairy Tale World."

Homecoming doesn't mean only football as the highlight of the week. There are many events scheduled for students, local athletic fans, and visiting distinguished alumni. The Panther boys soccer team visits Durango at 4:30 p.m. today, Oct. 5, at Riverview Field in Durango. The Peach Fuzz Volleyball Game (boys competing) will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 6, in Ron Wright Memorial Gym. The cross-country team is at a meet in Monticello, Utah, beginning at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday. The annual Powder Puff Football game, featuring junior and senior girls battling, will get under way at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 7, at Panther Stadium.

Friday, Oct. 8, will be a busy day. The Homecoming Parade is scheduled for 1 p.m. down Main Street in Cortez. The MCHS boys tennis team will be on the road for the first round of Regionals at Grand Junction. The Panther softball team will host Palisade for a twin bill beginning at noon. The second game should start about 2 p.m. at the Cortez Softball Complex. The MCHS boys soccer team will host Palisade at 4:30 p.m. at Norman Johnson Memorial Field. Again, the varsity football game is set for 7 p.m. Fans are urged to wear orange and black to show their support.

On Saturday, Oct. 9, fans will turn to volleyball excitement as the powerful Panthers host Montrose beginning at noon in Ron Wright Memorial Gym. Action also will be on the diamond as the softball team hosts Rifle at noon and 2 p.m. The boys tennis team will once again be in Grand Junction competing at Regionals. The dance will be held from 8-11 p.m. at the Montezuma County Annex Building.
