Sept. 11, 1999 By Mike Weaver The final checkered flag of the waved Sept. 4 at the Montezuma County Speedway, closing a very interesting season. Drivers of mini, hobby and street stock as well as International Motor Contest Association sanctioned modified race cars were on hand for the season finale which clinched the Speedway season track championships for all four classes. The results of the races offered no surprises, as track leaders build up good leads during the season. Steve Blair of Cortez nailed down the season track championship with a total of 601 track points, while Kent Galyon, also from Cortez, ran second at 566. Finishing up the season in third place was Montezuma-Cortez High School sophomore Levi Hill with 550. In the hobby stock class, Ron Leonard from Cortez walked away with a 543 track total and the championship with Ryan Neely of Cahone running second at 466. Billy Kibel, Cortez, piled up a season total of 418 points for third place. The street stock class was equally a runaway with Dennis Rieb of Cortez finishing the season a track champ with a total of 458 track points. Despite a season of difficulties beginning with an early season rollover, Cortez street stocker Robert Reed finished in second with a 313 point total. Danny Stevenson of Cortez amassed a 213 point total in his car number 5T to finish third. The SpeedwayÕs two regulars in modified racing, Aaron Spangler and Jay Kibel, finished one-two. Spangler, a racer from Dove Creek, ended the season with a 457 while Kibel of Cortez finished second with 417. Brandon Carley of Bloomfield, N.M., finished third in the point standings with 319 points despite not having raced at the Speedway since July 16. Trophies will be presented and track champs feted in a banquet to be held later this fall. Blair put the finishing flourish on a championship season by notching a walk-away win in the mini stock main event. It was a three way battle early on with Hill battling with Galyon and Randy Dorsett of LaPlata, N.M. for the lead. Dorsett and Galyon got tangled up coming out of the fourth turn in lap 2, though, and drew the yellow flag. The re-line sent the two to the back of the pack. As the third lap began, Blair took charge with Hill holding down the second spot. Galyon made a quick move back up to third place. Hill faded in the fifth lap, and Galyon got around Dorsett to take the second spot. The field was spread by the eighth lap with Blair holding a comfortable lead, and he began lapping cars on the backstretch of the 12th lap. Blair held was slowed down by lap cars in the final lap, but still was able to hold off a strong challenge from Galyon. Dorsett scored a third place finish. The hobby stock main event was shortened from 15 to 12 laps after the already small field of four cars was narrowed to three after four laps. Leonard jumped out to a good lead after starting from the post position and viewed the field from his figurative rear view mirror throughout the race. A newcomer to the Speedway, Jack Semler of Bayfield finished a distant second, and in third was Wayne Odell from Pleasant View. A battle for the top spot ended in a walkway in the final lap of the street stock main event. Rieb, Tony Hill of Cortez and Max Ksiazkiewicz from Monticello, Utah, battled early on for the top spot with Reib taking the early edge. In the fourth lap, Hill grabbed the lead on the backstretch. But the order was scrambled in the 14 lap when Reib retook the pace with Ksiazkiewicz trailing. Hill faded into third. Hill worked back up in lap 15, though, with Reib holding on to second and Ksiazkiewicz in third. That order prevailed the final five laps. |
