Funeral services for Beuna Mae Burris will be held Tuesday, Jan. 7, at the Evans Funeral Home in Houston, Mo., at 1 p.m. Pastor Eugene Earp will officiate. There will be a viewing at the Ertel Memorial Chapel in Cortez on Thursday, Jan. 4, between 2 and 5 p.m. Beuna Mae Burris was born to William Thomas and Missouri Adaline (Walker) Hill in Marshfield, Mo., on Dec. 18, 1908. She passed away on Monday, Jan. 1, 2001, at the Valley Inn Nursing Home in Mancos, at the age of 92. Beuna Mae was wed to John Burris in February 1930 in Houston, Mo. John passed away in May 1982. Beuna loved to quilt, garden and raise flowers. She was a faithful member of the First Southern Baptist Church. She is survived by her son, Johnney (Cretia) Burris of Cortez; grandchildren, Joseph Franklin (Myra) Burris of Cortez; Johnney Wayne (Ginny) Burris, also of Cortez, and Donna Marie (Rick) Weems of Corinth, Texas. Also surviving her are her 13 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren. She leaves behind one sister, Hazel Merritt, of Dewey, Okla., as well as many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved spouse, three sisters and three brothers. Local arrangements are being handled through the Ertel Funeral Home. Little Bill Goforth Funeral services for Little Bill Goforth, a longtime Dove Creek resident, will be held Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2001, at the Dove Creek Assembly of God Church beginning at 2 p.m. Pastor Marvin Pemberton will officiate. Interment will follow at the Peel Cemetery. Little Bill was born the son of Blufford and Allie Goforth in Shannon County, Mo., on June 20, 1901. He passed away at the Vista Grande Nursing Home on Saturday, Dec. 30, 2000. A daughter, Helen Knuckles of Egnar; five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and four great-great grandchildren survive Little Bill. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Lucille (Hicks) Goforth. Memorial contributions can be made in memory of Bill Goforth with the Dove Creek Ambulance Fund. Robert Francis Janz Robert Francis Janz of Mancos died at Scripps Memorial Hospital, San Diego, Calif., on Dec. 29, 2000. He was 66. Mr. Janz was born Oct. 27, 1934, in Dancy, Wisc., to Paul and Florence Miller Janz. Mr. Janz was educated in Dancy and Mosinee, Wisc., schools. From 1951 to 1956 he served in the U.S. Navy. Mr. Janz was married to Patricia Murphy on Oct. 5, 1957, in Kenosha, Wisc. For 20 years he was employed by ARA in Kenosha. He had been a resident of Colorado since 1979. Mr. Janz is survived by his wife, Pat Janz, of Mancos; a son, Donald Robert Janz, Mancos; daughter-in-law Melissa and three grandchildren, Courtney Dawn, Shelby Jean and Dalton Robert Janz, all of Mancos. In addition, he is survived by brothers Henry, Carl and James Janz, and sisters Marion Weyer and Ione Levy, and many beloved nieces nephews and a host of friends. Visitation will be Wednesday, Jan. 3, at Hood Mortuary in Durango from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Services will be held at St. Rita’s Catholic Church on Thursday, Jan. 4, in Mancos. Madison Elaine Podgornoff was born on Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2000, to Matthew and Paula (Daves) Podgornoff in Durango, Colo. Madison died the same day of her birth at the Mercy Medical Center in Durango. Family and friends grieve the loss of Madison with her parents. Surviving her are both parents; her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Daves of Arriola, Colo., Wayne and Karry Snider of Klamath Falls, Ore., and Ed Podgornoff of Schertz, Texas. Jaramillo, 11, of Bloomfield, N.M., went home to be with his Heavenly Father on Dec. 25, 2000. He was born Nov. 16, 1989, in Farmington, N.M. He is survived by his parents, Jerry T. and Evelyn Cordova of Bloomfield; brothers J.T. Cordova of Phoenix;, and Jesse Ray Cordova of Bloomfield; sister Sylvia Jaramillo; grandparents Arsenio and Rufina Jaramillo, all of Bloomfield; Jerry and Dee Cordova of Cortez, and Dan and Margie Cummins of Bloomfield. Quercia was born on Sept. 3, 1918, to Frank and Angela Quercia in New York. He passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2000, at the Valley Inn Nursing Home in Mancos. He was 82. Nick worked for the Teamsters Union as a driver. He loved to sing and was an avid fan of Phoenix Roadrunner Hockey. He was wed to Rose F. Devito Quercia in New York in 1945. Rose has preceded him in death. Surviving are his children, Tom Quercia of Phoenix, Ariz., Bob Quercia of Prescott, Ariz. and Mancos, Colo., and Jim Quercia. Gaylyne Vickie Laner, a resident of Sedro-Wooley, Wash., and a former resident of Towaoc, passed away Dec. 25, 2000 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident south of Cortez. She was 43. Gaylyne Vickie Laner was born on Feb. 3, 1957 in Cortez, Colo. to John and Sarah Posey. She is preceded in death by her grandma Gaylyne Laner; great-grandma Sarah Posey and Grandpa Wilford Lang Sr. Billy Eugene Steele, 65, of Bloomfield, N.M., died suddenly Dec. 25, 2000. He is survived by his wife, Barbara, and his mother, Ruby Perschall of Bloomfield, two sons, Steven and wife Lyla, and Terry and wife Jennell, all of Cortez, and daughter Deborah Miller and husband Fred of Bolivar, Missouri, eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He is also survived by his aunt and uncle, Charles and Jane Wallace of Arlington, Texas. Billy and his family lived 30 years in Cortez before moving to Bloomfield in 1992. Billy was a hard-working man who was knowledgeable and respected in the petroleum industry. He loved hunting, fishing and playing golf and liked to walk around in the desert exploring. Carlson, a resident of Cortez, will be held Saturday, Dec. 30, at the Ertel Memorial Chapel beginning at 1 p.m. Nelda, a resident of Vista Mesa Retirement Home since April of this year, passed away at Southwest Memorial Hospital on Monday, Dec. 25, 2000, at the age of 89. She was born near Cortez on Aug. 19, 1911, the daughter of Will and Clara (Walters) Swank. On Christmas Eve in 1932, Nelda became the bride of Harry William Carlson in Aztec, N.M. They enjoyed 64 years of marriage until Harry's death in January 1997. Surviving Nelda are her children, Betty Carr of Lake Havasu City, Ariz.; Jeanette and Dick Daves of Cortez; Loretta and Robert Green of Cortez, and Harry L. (Swede) and Alice Carlson of Mira Loma, Calif.; and 14 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. Mrs. McGee passed away in Grand Junction on Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2000, at the age of 87. She was born in Lewis, Colo., on May 3, 1913. She married John H. McGee in Cortez on Feb. 26, 1936. John passed away in October 1966. Fern was a member of the Cortez American Legion Auxiliary and a Pink Lady, volunteered for many outreach programs, and was a Gold Star Mother. Fern is survived by her children, Arthur McGee of Grand Junction, Vernalee Huckabay of Roseville, Calif., John R. McGee of Grand Junction, and Richard McGee, also of Grand Junction. Her brother, Albert Lobato, and sister, Lucy Garcia, both of Denver, also survive her. Services will be under the direction of the Ertel Funeral Home. Charles Wayne "Pete" Chandler, a property manager in Clifton, passed away Dec. 10, 2000, at the Veterans Hospital in Grand Junction after a lengthy battle with emphysema and complications. Cremation preceded a memorial service at Callahan-Edfast Mortuary in Grand Junction on Dec. 14. The ashes will be buried in Cortez at a later date. Pete was born May 25, 1944, in Cortez to Earl Herbert Chandler and Sadie Janelle (Mink) Chandler. He attended Cortez schools, graduating from Montezuma High School in 1961. At this time, he joined the Marine Corps and received an honorable discharge in 1965. Pete later settled in Grand Junction. His interests were antiques and horses, and he later became involved in the Little Britches Rodeo. His parents, Earl and Sadie Chandler, preceded him in death, as did five brothers: Bill, Chip, Jim, Larry and Fred. Survivors include one son, Kip Chandler of Montrose; four stepsons, Terry Harlan of Rifle, Gary Harlan of New Castle, Shane Kelly and Jim Kelly, both of Grand Junction; three step-daughters, Dawn Foster of Whitewater, Lisa Tow of Phoenix and Delilah Harlan of Glenwood Springs; 14 step-grandchildren; and two brothers, Edward Chandler of Fruita and Albert Chandler of Hesperus, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Officiating will be Father Tom Munson. Mable was born in Cortez on Dec. 9, 1932, the daughter of Manuel and Rebecca (Gomez) Miera. She passed away at Southwest Memorial Hospital on Sunday, Dec. 24, 2000. She was 68. A graduate of Montezuma-Cortez High School, Mable wed Donald Harrison White on Aug. 8, 1955, in Aztec, N.M. For 45 years they worked side by side, raising a family and making a living on their farm. Their marriage was a partnership based on love, respect and friendship. Mable took pleasure in her gardens and baking for her family. Most especially though, Mable was very involved in her grandchildren's activities, primarily softball. A loving family survives Mable, including her husband, Don, of Pleasant View; her father, Manuel Miera of Kirtland, N.M.; a son, Robert Adams of Kirtland, N.M.; and two daughters, Roxie Rupe and her husband, Trent, of Clifton, Colo., and Debbie White of Pleasant View. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Terra White of Pleasant View, Leann Rupe of Clifton, Don Davis of Pleasant View, Scott Rupe and Katie Rupe, both of Clifton, as well as her sister and her husband, Louanna and Jesse Worrell of Cortez. Helen Popp of Cortez passed away Thursday evening, Dec. 21, 2000, at the Vista Grande Nursing Home. She was 84. A memorial service is planned for a later date at the Kingdom Hall of the Jehovah’s Witnesses in Cortez. Mrs. Popp was born to Joseph and Weronica Olteann Francu on March 2, 1916, in Detroit, Mich. She was married to Nicholas Popp on Sept. 25, 1938, in Chicago, Ill. He preceded her in death. Helen was employed by the Motorola Company and the Kimball Piano company as a wood-finisher. She is survived by her sons, Brian Popp of Cortez and Bruce Popp of Simi Valley, Calif., and a daughter, Diane Cook of Fort Worth, Texas. Jeter Memorial services for Joy Wanda Jeter will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 27, at the Ertel Memorial Chapel beginning at 2 p.m. Marvin Graves will officiate. Joy was born on Oct. 10, 1918, to Silas Edmund and Lena Edna (Dobbins) Jeter in McElmo, Colo. She passed away at her home in McElmo on Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2000, at the age of 82. Joy never married but had a very full life serving her country. She was a supply sergeant in the Air Force for 23 1/2 years. Joy enjoyed the outdoors. She often would spend her leave with her nephews or nieces and explore the beautiful United States. She was a rock climber and loved to camp. She is survived by her brother, Dale Jeter, and his wife Annette of McElmo, and nephews Tommy Jeter, Ed Jeter, and Darryl Ray Jeter all of Cortez, and by niece Barbara Jeter of Yellow Jacket. She leaves behind 15 great-nieces and nephews. Also surviving Joy are her cousins: Orin and Karen Pilcher, Bob and Verna Mae Whitmore, and George and Jean Chesney. Carol was born to Hubert and Dorothy (Knight) Sanders on Dec. 29, 1946, in Dallas, Texas. She passed away at the Vista Grande Nursing Home in Cortez on Sunday, Dec. 17, at the age of 53. Carol taught for many years as a kindergarten teacher. She was an accomplished educator, having graduated from Sam Houston High School, and having received a B.A. from Pacific Lutheran College, a B.A. from Texas Wesleyan College, and an M.A. in early childhood development from the Northern Arizona University. She was a member of the Beta Sigma Phi Society for 31 years. Carol loved to create and was an excellent seamstress, making cloth dolls. Carol was wed to Dale William Smith on Jan. 31, 1969, in Fort Worth, Texas. Dale survives his beloved spouse. From this union were born two sons who survive: Kyle Fredrick Smith and his wife, Brandi, of Forth Worth, and Kent Tyson Smith and his wife, Monika, of Killeen, Texas. Also surviving are her three grandchildren: Kayla, Kara, and Jacob Smith. She is survived by both of her parents, and her brother, Stephen Harrison Sanders and his wife, Susie of Mililani, Hawaii. Frank Daniels Frank Daniels, a 25-year resident of Cortez, passed away at Southwest Memorial Hospital in Cortez on Dec. 16, 2000, at the age of 66. He was born to Andrew and Lula (McClurg) Daniels on Sept. 15, 1934, in Lawrence City, Ohio. Frank worked for the Superior Oil Company as an oil-field worker. Frank is survived by his wife, Lenore (Niemeyer) Daniels of Cortez, and three children, Helen, Todd, and Steven. He was preceded in death by both of his parents. No services are planned Clifton Samuel Combee Services for Clifton Samuel Combee, a Dolores resident since 1951, will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 19, at the Cortez Four corners Funeral Chapel. Mr. Richard Rogers will officiate. Interment will follow in the Summit Ridge Cemetery. Mr. Combee passed away Dec. 15, 2000, at Southwest Memorial Hospital. He was 76. He was born Nov. 8, 1924, to Samuel J. and Zenobia Hiser Combee in Catron County, N.M. He attended school in New Mexico. On March 5, 1948, he married Rose McCormack in Kingman, Ariz.. They were blessed with four children. Rose passed away in February, 1988. On April 13, 1992, Clifton married June Jensen in Durango. She passed away on Oct. 21, 2000. Funeral services for lifelong Cortez resident Fern Elizabeth Hensley will be held Tuesday, Dec. 19, at the Cortez Church of Christ beginning at 2 p.m. Mr. Hunt Zumwalt will officiate. Burial will follow at the Cortez Cemetery. Fern passed away at her home in Cortez on Dec, 13, 2000, at the age of 81. She was born in Springfield, Colo., on Dec. 8, 1919, to Oscar and Lenora Ethel (Clayton) Branson. On Feb. 19, 1936, Fern became the bride of Edward Walter "Doc" Hensley in Cortez. From this union were born Norman, Dora, Mack, and Dennis. Doc passed away Dec. 27, 1983. Fern was a devoted member of the Cortez Church of Christ. She loved to garden. Surviving Fern are her children and their spouses, Norman and Mary Hensley of Dove Creek, Dora and Jim White of Los Luz, N.M., Mack and Joyce Hensley of St. Marys, Idaho., and Dennis and Colleen Hensley of Mancos; and 12 grandchildren. She is also survived by three brothers, Reed Branson and his wife, Margie of Dolores, Harold Branson and his wife Eloise of Seneca, Mo., and Ray Branson and his wife, Georgie, of West Plains, Mo.; and two sisters, Eva Lisenbury and her husband, Rueben of Dolores, and Margaret Fiksdel of Oregon. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Ervin, Vernon and Robert Branson, and one sister, Ruth Darland. Graveside services for Margaret L. Mrs. Baze passed away on Nov. 23, 2000 in Riverside, Calif., at the age of 92. She was born on Jan. 4, 1908, to Guy and Opie Pruner Harrison in Cortez. She married Lloyd Baze on Feb. 14, 1933, in Glendale, Calif. She was a homemaker and piano teacher in both California and Dove Creek, where she and Lloyd moved in 1942. She is survived by her daughter, Lynn Marie Nash; three grandchildren, Jeanne Nash, Jacque Ragsdale and Guy Nash, and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd and brothers, Charles and Lynn Harrison. Judy was born on June 3, 1943 in Parkridge, Ill., the daughter of William A. and Lu (Fleissner) Anderson. She passed away at her home on Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2000 at the age of 57. Judy loved gardening, yard work and bird watching. She was an avid antique collector. She is survived by her beloved husband, Larry James Reader, to whom she was wed on Aug. 25, 1990 in Estancia, N.M. She is also survived by her mother, Lu Tyson of Albuquerque, N.M.; her children; Lee Austin of Mancos, and Paul Dugas and his wife Maria of Louisiana; her brother, Corky Anderson of Placitas, N.M. and one grandchild. Jack Lee Sr. Funeral services for Jack Lee Sr. are scheduled for Tuesday, December 12, at the Ertel Memorial Chapel beginning at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at the family cemetery at Mancos Creek, N.M. Jack Lee Sr. was born on April 15, 1924 to Hosteen Begay and Lizzy (Willie) Begay. He was born at Mancos Creek on the New Mexico and Colorado state line. He passed away on Friday, December 8, 2000 at the Vista Grande Nursing Home in Cortez. He was 76 years old. Jack worked for many years as a miner in the uranium industry. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn (Benally) Lee; and his children, David Johnson Lee of Waterflow, N.M., Jackson J. Lee Sr. of Albuquerque, N.M., Jack Lee Jr. of Cortez, Colo., Emma Begay of Shiprock, N.M., Davis David Lee of Topeka, Kan., Paul H. Lee of Cortez, Colo., and Vickie J. Lee of Cortez. He has left behind 17 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. Also surviving Jack is his brother, John Willie Sr. of Mancos, Colo. He was preceded in death by both of his parents; son, Gerald J. Lee; granddaughter, Yolanda Lee; grandson, Artemas Lee; brother, Willie Begay; and a sister, Mary Lee. Funeral services will be under the direction of the Ertel Funeral Home.
Caroline Roelfs Merrill Funeral services for Caroline Roelfs Merrill, a lifelong Cortez resident, will be held Wednesday, Dec. 13, at the First Baptist Church of Cortez beginning at 2 p.m. Pastor David Donnelly will be officiating. Interment will follow at the Lebanon Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the Ertel Memorial Chapel Tuesday afternoon between the hours of 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. Caroline was born to Edward and Emma Jo (Bradford) Roelfs on August 6, 1933 in Cortez. She passed away at her home on Saturday, Dec. 9, 2000 at the age of 67. Caroline was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Cortez. She worked as a bookkeeper for the Federal Reserve Bank. Caroline and her beloved husband, David L. Merrill, were wed on Dec. 16, 1960 in Las Vegas, Nev. Surviving Caroline is her husband, David; her two brothers, Edward Roelfs and his wife, Jo of Cortez; John Roelfs and his wife, Dorothy of Portland, Ore.; and her sister, Louise Roelfs of Washington. Jonne Deanne Manning Risenhoover Funeral services for Jonne Deanne Manning Risenhoover are scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 13, at the Eastland Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints beginning at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at the Eastland Cemetery. Leslie White and John Wilson will be officiating the services. Jonne was born on Aug. 15, 1945 to John Dudley and Charlene Edith (Clinkenbeard) Manning in Oklahoma City, Okla. She passed away in a fatal car accident on Friday, Dec. 8, 2000 in Absarokee, Mont. at the age of 55. Jonne was married to the late Donald Glen Risenhoover on April 20, 1964. They shared 29 wonderful years together and from this union they had four daughters, Teresa Barry and her husband, Eddie of Eastland, Utah, Lisa Jones and her husband, Troy of Colorado Springs, Colo., Tina Inskeep and her husband, Jimmy of Absarokee, and Brendee Risenhoover of Colorado Springs. There are eight grandchildren, Trint, Shilo, and Seante Barry, Tyler Jones, Jessee, Dakota, and Kamas Inskeep, and Shay Lee Risenhoover. She was preceded in death by both of her parents and her husband. Jonne worked at Stillwater Community Hospital and the Special K Ranch in Columbus, Mont. Prior to that, Jonne worked at the Monticello Hospital. She enjoyed her children, grandchildren, crafts, and crocheting. She is a 1964 graduate of Montezuma County High School. Nancy D. Tanner Funeral services for former Cortez resident Nancy D. Tanner will be held Saturday, Dec. 9, at the Cortez Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints beginning at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at the Cortez Cemetery. Surviving Nancy is a large and loving family consisting of her daughter, Margaret Morgan Tanner and her husband, Carwin, who is also a stepson, of Fulton, Mo; five additional stepchildren and their spouses, Darlene and Ken Absher of Grass Valley, Calif., Leon and Donna Tanner of Cortez, Duane and Vonnie Tanner of Cortez, Jolene Phelps of Boise, Ida., and Renea and Larry Yarbrough also of Cortez; granddaughter, Morgan Tanner of Fulton, Mo., as well as 20 additional grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren; and her sister, Joan Palmer of Denver. A son, Kenneth Morgan, and her husband, Ralph Tanner, preceded her in death. Nancy was a devoted and dedicated member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Bettye Lee Williamson, a longtime Cortez resident, was born on Nov. 23, 1926 to Lee and Mable (Vawter) Long in Webb City, Okla. She passed away on Nov. 28, 2000 at her home in Cortez at the age of 74. Bettye is survived by her children; Darrell Williamson of Oklahoma City, Okla., George Williamson of Oklahoma City, Okla., Peggy Williamson of Norman, Okla., and Jeff Williamson of Dallas, Tex. Visitation will be held at the Ertel Memorial Chapel Friday, from 9 a.m. until noon. Mr. Magarrell passed away at Southwest Memorial Hospital on Monday, Nov. 27, 2000. He was born April 11, 1918 to George Reed Magarrell and Mamie (Carson) Magarrell in Durango, Colo. Roy was a retired military man serving in the Air Force. He is a veteran of World War II and retired from the military with a rank of major. He is a member of the Masons in Farmington, N.M., part of the Animas Lodge #15. He loved to go hunting and fishing and had a real fondness for bird dogs. He was a great entertainer and gourmet cook. Roy spent his summers on the West Fork of the Dolores River and winters in Allome, Sinaloa, Mexico. He never married; however, he is survived by his sister, Barbara Randolph of Farmington, N.M.; and one foster son, Ramon Aragon Castro of Allome Sinaloa, Mexico. He is also survived by three foster grandchildren. Six nephews and one niece survive their beloved Uncle Roy. He was preceded in death by both of his parents and by his sister, Etta Mae Edwards. During his time as a resident of Clovis, Calif., he was a member of the Clovis Masonic Lodge #417 and Concordia OES #309. Upon moving to Cortez in 1991 he became involved in the Cortez OES #87, and the Lewis Grange. On Oct. 21,1993, Carl wed Ruth Garlinghouse in Cortez. Carl loved horses and riding. He rode in the Rose Parade as well as many other California parades during his time there. He also enjoyed hunting. Surviving Carl are his wife of seven years, Ruth Smith of Lewis.; step-daughters, Jean Hurst of Clovis, Calif., and Carolyn Stephens and her husband, Ron of Quartzite, Ariz.; a step-son, Jim Garlinghouse and his wife, Kay of Lewis; a niece, Sandra Greenlee of Cortez; six grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren; two sisters, Lauvell Hudson of Cortez, and Irma Waddington of Bakersfield, Calif.; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Dutch worked as a cook in the food service industry. She worked in many of the local Cortez establishments such as Pippo's, Stoner Cafe, M&M Truck Stop, and Ute Coffee Shop. Dutch attended school in Cortez and was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She is survived by her children: Ilean Silva of Denver, Bobby Eaton of Reno, Nev., Billy Eaton of Las Vegas, Nev., Ricky Eaton of Reno, Nev., Rodney Keith of Maysville, Okla.; and her sister, Reva Johnson of Cortez. She is also survived by numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, along with a number of nieces, nephews, and friends who will dearly miss her. She was preceded in death by both of her parents, a daughter, Darlene Nichols who passed away in 1998 and two sisters. Harry Zimmerhackel Jr. Harry Zimmerhackel Jr. was born on Dec. 9, 1922 in Denver, Colo. He passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2000 at his home in Cortez. He was 77 years old. Harry was a teacher in the Denver Public School District for over 18 years. He was also a veteran of World War II. Stan was an avid rock hound, enjoying cutting and polishing the rock he found. He also practiced silversmithing. Stan drove the senior citizen bus in Blanding up until hes death. Gerald L. Booth Gerald L. Booth, a longtime resident of Cortez, passed away Nov. 15, 2000 at Southwest Memorial Hospital. He was 66. Mr. Booth is survived by his wife, Loretta of Cortez. He passed away on Monday, Nov. 13, 2000 in a traffic accident near Hesperus. He was 88. Leo worked as a civil engineer before retiring. He very much enjoyed traveling, and was an avid reader. Many knew him to be a willing helper and "handyman." He was a member of the Elks Lodge. He was married to Mary Huntley who preceded him in death in 1990. He is survived by two sisters, Phyllis Shown of Monte Vista, and Gladys Staley of Cañon City. Walt was an active member of the community and served as a real-estate broker in the Cortez area for many years. She left this world on Sunday, Nov. 12, 2000, at Southwest Memorial Hospital at the age of 89. Homa Louise was a faithful homemaker, and mother of two sons. She loved to play bridge and was a Dolores Order of the Eastern Star past matron. She is survived by her children, James Cline and his wife, Ina Mae of Dolores, and Fred Cline and his wife, Virginia of Phoenix, Ariz. Her surviving grandchildren are: Lyle Cline, Kay Lanell Goode and her husband, Billy of Cortez, Dan Cline of Dolores, and Dennis Cline and his wife Carlene of Dolores. She was married to Tillman Sylling, who passed away in 1987. Mrs. Sylling enjoyed knitting and needlework, and family get-togethers where she could visit. Memorial Services for John Sodic, a resident to Dove Creek, are scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 11, at 1 p.m. at the Ertel Memorial Chapel. Rev. Bud Rousset will officiate. John was born on October 17, 1919, in Leadville, Colo., to Anton Sodic and Stella Dorrington Sodic. He passed away on Nov. 9, 2000 at his home in Dove Creek at the age of 81. John was married to Nell Williams in Leadville on Aug. 29, 1947, and they were married for over 53 years. John was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army, and served in North Africa, Sicily, and Italy where he drove crash ambulances at the airport test sites. John was an avid hunter and fisherman, and loved his horses and dogs. John is survived by his wife, Nell of the family home; daughter Nita Purkat and her husband Joe of Dove Creek; son Clifford Sodic and his wife Lupe of Brighton, Colo., and son Bert Sodic and his wife Grace of Leadville, Colo. He is also survived by an aunt, Gladys Gird of Grand Junction, and nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, He was preceded in death by both of his parents, one infant son, and two brothers. Memorial services for Cyril Wayne Hoyt, a resident of Mancos for 43 years, will be held on Monday, Nov. 13, at 10 a.m. at the Summit Community Church, on Highway 184 across from Summit Lake. Cyril died peacefully at his home on Nov. 9, 2000, at the age of 87. He was born on Aug. 27, 1913 in Elmwood, Wisconsin. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Rosselle; daughters Donna Cash and husband Steve of Hurricane, Utah; Joan Wheeler and husband Dennis of Bloomfield, N.M.; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren, and numerous other family members and friends. Cyril and Rosselle were married July 29, 1943 in Ellsworth, Wis. For 43 years, they have been residents of Mancos. Cyril loved the outdoors and fishing and hunting. His jobs were even related to outdoors, driving a logging truck. But his greatest joys were being with his family and friends. Memorial contributions may be made in Cyril Hoyt's name at the Mancos Valley Bank. Services are under the direction of Ertel Funeral Home. Edna Patterson, former resident of Cortez, passed away Nov. 2, 2000, at Mercy General Hospital in Sacramento, Calif. She was 78. A memorial service was held Friday, Nov. 10, at the Jehovah Witness Kingdom Hall in Yuba City, Calif. Cremation is planned, with interment to be in the Cortez Cemetery. Survivors include 10 children: Floyd Patterson and family of Cortez; Priscilla Estas, Ellen Pratt, Gloria Lawrence, Jim Patterson, Ronnie Patterson, Melanie Phillips, Alma Rue, Carol Johnson, all of California, and Sue Little of Fairfield, Texas; sister, Helen Jackson of California; 24 grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren. Edna Patterson was preceded in death by her parents, O.R. (Oscar) and Alma Adams Hipp; husband, Floyd Patterson Sr.; brother William Hipp, and son, Randy Patterson. Lorie Kay Sellers of Cortez passed away Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2000, in Durango after a battle with cancer. She was 40. Funeral services will be held Friday, Nov. 10, at 1 p.m. at the Church of Christ north of Cortez on Highway 666. Burial will be at Cedar Grove Cemetery in Mancos. Mrs. Sellers was born July 21, 1960, in Boulder, Colo. She married J.R. Sellers on Feb. 14, 1980, in Bayfield, Colo. Mrs. Sellers was a mother and wife who was devoted to her family. She was a veterinary technician for several years. She is survived by her husband, J.R., and daughters, Kate-lyn and Julia Sellers of Cortez; parents, Harvey and Mary Green of Durango; sister, Mary Ann (Doy) Graf of Mancos; brother John (Pam) Green of Aztec N.M.; father-in-law, Harry (Christine) Sellers of Aztec; mother-in-law, Marlene (Harley) Yeager of Cortez, and several nieces and nephews. Box 3355, Durango, CO 81302. James Buford Keith, a resident of rural Mancos, passed away Nov. 3, 2000, at his residence. He was 88. Mr. Keith was born April 22, 1912, in Van Alstyne, Texas. He graduated from high school in Van Alstyne and two years of trade school in Chicago, Ill. Some of his favorite enjoyments in life were gardening, hunting, fishing and family get-togethers. Mr. Keith was in the U.S. Navy and was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. He was preceded in death by his wife, Myrle Maxwell Keith, in 1977. They were blessed with one son, Raymond Keith, of rural Mancos. In addition, James Buford Keith is survived by three grandchildren, James P. Keith of La Luz, N.M.; Kevin R. Keith of Stillwater, Okla.; and Jency E. Gadd of Charmichel, Calif.; sisters, Ruth L. Schwarz of Corsicana, Texas; Juanita Smith of Anna, Texas; and Juan Keith of Anna, Texas; three nieces, Marilyn Keith Black of Grants, N.M.; Karen Meriwether of Richardson, Texas; and Pat Barlow of Beaumont, Texas. Cremation has taken place. A memorial will be set for a later date. Alma Duran Alma Duran, 85, passed away Oct. 22, 2000 in Tulsa, Okla. Memorial services are to be arranged at a later date. She was born March 4, 1915, in Millerville, Mo., to Russell and Maud Leslie. Alma had lived in Sandsprings, Okla. for the past six years, and previously, in Colorado, where she resided for the majority of her life. She is survived by her twin sister, Olga James; son, Dillard Duran, both of Cortez; daughter, Marlene Duran, and twin grandsons, Ted and Tim Arellano, all of Phoenix, Ariz.; daughters, Dana Gollihue of Brighton, Colo, and Vivian Duran of Grand Junction, Colo.; son, Eddie Duran of Denver; granddaughters, Teri Meadows, who shared in her life in Sandsprings; Peggy Gollihue of Grayson, Ky., and Dalena Duran of Lansing, Mich.; four great-grandchildren, two of whom, Gavin Duran and Ayana Meadows, also shared in her life in Sandsprings. Special people who also loved and shared her life in Sandsprings are George and Johnny Meadows. Alma was preceded in death by her husband, Edward C. Duran; sons Sidney and Dwayne Duran; daughter, Nonnis Duran; both parents; two brothers and a sister. "Mom" and "Grandma" will be dearly missed. Maude M. Hicks Memorial services for Maude M. Hicks, a longtime resident of Cortez, are scheduled for Friday, Nov. 10, at the Ertel Memorial Chapel beginning at 2 p.m. Mr. Hunt Zumwalt will be officiating. Maude was born to Clifford Charles and Adell Alice (Mogg) Alexander on Aug. 10, 1919, in Lookeba, Okla. She passed away Nov. 4, 2000, at Southwest Memorial in Cortez at the age of 81. Maude and her sweetheart, Cleo Hicks, were wed on March 6, 1935, in El Reno, Okla., and celebrated over 65 years of marriage. She was a dog-breeder in Cortez but had a love for all animals. She is survived by her two children, LaVonn Millard and her husband Dudley of Cortez, and Melvin Hicks and his wife Maribeth of Cortez. She is also survived by three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by both of her parents, and both of her sisters, Mildred Millard and Verla Crum. Betty Schutt of Cortez passed away Monday, Oct. 23, 2000 at University Medical Center in Denver. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 4 at 11 a.m., at Trinity Lutheran Church. A reception will follow the service. She was born Betty Jean Diers on June 14, 1928, in Sheboygan, Wis., to Viola Grupe Diers Henning and Harold Diers. She married Donald Schutt on Jan. 24, 1948, and they moved to Phoenix, Ariz. in 1954. She was employed by Reynolds Aluminum and later by Maricopa County Public School in Arizona. She and Donald built their retirement home in Cortez in the early 1980s. Betty was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and was actively involved in the Cortez Christian Women’s Club. She is survived by her children, Mark (Vicki) Schutt of Phoenix; Mary (John) Gleeson of Littleton, Colo. and Kathy (Paul) Turner, also of Littleton. She is also survived by four grandchildren, William and Bradley Gleeson, Katie Turner and Jenny Schutt; her sister, Patricia Runstrom of Ladysmith, Wis.; brother, Harold Diers of Tucson; stepsisters Doris Wagner of Sheboygan; Shirley Van Ess of Waldo, Wis.; aunts Eleanore Oehmke of Scottsdale, Ariz.; Dorothy Wick and Lucille Peterman of Sheboygan; uncle Raymond Grupe of California; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and dear friends. Betty was preceded in death by her parents; son Thomas Schutt; grandsons Alexander Gleeson;s stepfather, Frank Henning; stepsister Betty Jane (Henning) Wisman and step brother, Milton Henning. Her husband of 49 years, Donald Schutt, passed away Nov. 27, 1997. Memorial donations may be made to the Trinity Lutheran Church. Graveside services for Alice Crapo Conn, a former longtime Dove Creek resident, will be held Saturday, Nov. 4, at the Peel Cemetery beginning at 1 p.m. Mrs. Conn passed away in Lakewood, Colo., on Monday, Oct. 30, 2000, at the age of 91. She was born in Coalbed, Colo. on May 28,1909, the daughter of George W. and Harriett (Crapo) Snyder. Her husband, William Homer Conn, preceded her in death. Alice was a homemaker and mother to her three children who survive her, Barbara Hancock of Dove Creek; Bud Conn and his wife Pat of Golden, Colo.; and Pat Buffington and her husband Ray of Grand Junction, Colo. She is also survived by her two sisters, Effie Dunning of Albuquerque, N.M., and Lola Longenbaugh of Cortez. Surviving their grandmother are 13 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren and nine great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by both of her parents, her husband, and a son-in-law, Wilbert Hancock. Memorial contributions can be made to the Dove Creek VFW Ambulance Fund. Thomas Lloyd Jackson Funeral services for Thomas Lloyd Jackson, a lifelong resident of Dove Creek, are scheduled for Friday, Nov. 3, at the First Baptist Church of Dove Creek beginning at 2 p.m. Pastor Don Daniels will officiate. Interment will follow at the Dove Creek Cemetery. Visitation will be at the Ertel Memorial Chapel on Thursday, Nov. 2, from 1 to 5 p.m. Thomas was born to Lawrence and Eulah (Briggs) Jackson on Oct. 2, 1914 in Paris, Texas. He went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, Oct. 29, 2000 at the Valley Inn Nursing Home. He was 86 years old. Thomas served his community as a rancher and farmer. He was married on July 2, 1939 to his bride, Overa Mary Ragsdale. To this union three children were born. Thomas loved the outdoors and especially loved to hunt. He also spent some time working for the Civilian Conservation Corp Camps in Mesa Verde during the Depression. Thomas was a former member of the Cortez Elks Lodge and a member of the Dove Creek First Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Overa Mary Jackson, and by his children, Verdell Jackson and his wife, Linda of Kalispell, Mont., Gary L. Jackson of Berthoud, Colo., and Vera Deann Knuckles and her husband, Loyd of Dove Creek, Colo. His grandchildren, Bryan Jackson of Longmont, Colo., Scott Loyd Knuckles of Dove Creek, Colo., Shawn Dustin Jackson of Berthoud, Colo., April Marie DeZell of Calispell, Mont., Shelly Ann Purkat of Aztec, N.M., and four other great grandchildren survive Mr. Jackson. He is survived by extended family, Viola Martin of Dove Creek, Colo., Imogene Utley of Cortez, Colo., Hubert Jackson, of Salinas, Calif., Ira Lee Jackson of Weiser, Ida., Truman Jackson of Sparks, Nev., and George Jackson of Yuma, Ariz. Funeral services for former Cortez resident Harold Bateman, 78, of Chickasha, Okla., will be held Friday, Nov. 3 at 10 a.m. in the Parkview Christian Church, with Rev. David Woods officiating. Harold Bateman was born April 4, 1922 in Drumright, Okla., to Mark Bateman and Martha Humphreys. He passed away Monday, Oct. 30, 2000 in Chickasha. Harold grew up in Garber, Okla. He graduated from the high school there before going into the US Army for two years. He and Juanita Kilpatrick were married in 1945, in Seminole, Okla. He started working in the Oklahoma oil fields in 1947. Later, in 1956, he was transferred to Cortez, where he continued to work for an additional 23 years. He returned to Chickasha in 1980, and retired in 1985. Harold loved baseball, basketball, football and golf. He was a great youth baseball coach for about 15 years while in Cortez. Harold is survived by his wife, Juanita; two daughters, Karen Sue Bateman of Denver and Janet Lee Rakowitz of San Antonio, Texas; sons Kerry Lynn Bateman of Huntington Beach, Calif. and Alan Neal Bateman of Grand Junction, Colo.; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by both parents, one brother and three sisters. Internment will be in the Covington Cemetery in Covington, Okla. at 2 p.m. under the direction of Ferguson Funeral Home (405-224-1344). Funeral services for Nelma Finley, a longtime Cortez resident, are scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 4, at the Ertel Memorial Chapel beginning at 10 a.m. Mr. Hunt Zumwalt will be officiating the services. Interment will follow at the Cortez Cemetery. Nelma was born to Charles and Nora (Coles) Holding on Aug. 27, 1914 in Paris, Texas. She passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2000, at the Vista Grande Nursing Home in Cortez. Nelma was 86 years old. Nelma married Forrest Aulton Finley on January 25, 1938 in Paris, Texas. They were married for over 53 years until Forrest passed away in 1981. Nelma was a faithful member of the Cortez Church of Christ. She was a constant student always endeavoring to learn more. She enjoyed the old-time tent revivals, sewing, canning, gardening, and all of her grandchildren. She is survived by her children, Jim A. Finley and his wife, Lolita of Cortez, and Rick C. Finley and his wife, Theresa of Pleasant View; brother, E.V. "Jim" Holding of San Bernadino, Calif.; and her sister, Sadie Christian of Pasadena, Texas. John and Denise Thomas of Cortez; Quint and Angeline Taggart of Cortez; Tommy and Jami Dennison of Tucson, Ariz.; Jeremy and Gretchen Finley of Bay Point, Calif.; Kristen Finley of Grand Junction, Colo., and two great-grandchildren all survive their grandmother. Services are under the direction of the Ertel Funeral Home.
Freelin Martin Portner Freelin Martin Portner was born May 15, 1903, to William and Olga Lackmann Portner, in Deadwood, S.D., where his father was one of the early miners to work in the world-renowned Homestake Gold Mine. He passed away Oct. 27 in Durango, at the age of 97. Memorial services will be held Saturday, Nov. 4, 1 p.m. at the Kingdom Hall, 2537 County Road 203, Durango. Steven Geiger will officiate. He is survived by one son, four daughters and spouses, 22 grandchildren and two generations of great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Irma Arline Portner, two brothers-in-law; one sister-in-law; one son-in-law; one grandson; one granddaughter and four great-grandchildren.
