Former Cortez resident, Edward Guy McRae Jr., passed away in Bullhead City, Ariz., on Oct. 23, 1999 at the age of 73. He was cremated. Eddie was born on June 17, 1926 in Pueblo, Colo., the son of Edward Guy McRae Sr. and Mary Jane (Bell) McRae. His family moved to Dolores in 1935. Eddie married Vara Dazey in 1950. They raised their four children in Cortez while Eddie made a living as a realtor. After his retirement, Eddie and Vera moved to the Denver area to be closer to their children. Eight years a ago, Eddie and Vera moved to Bullhead City, Ariz. He was a member of the Board of Realtors in Bullhead City and continued to hold his membership in the Cortez Elks Lodge. He is survived by his wife, Vera McRae, of Bullhead City, Ariz., daughters, Colleen n Gibbs and Susan Nicely, both of Denver; a son Charlie McRae, of Las Vegas, Nev.; seven grandchildren and one great- grandchild. Funeral services for Francis Raymond Stockdale, a lifelong resident of Cortez will be held Thursday, Nov. 4, 1999, at St. Barnabas of the Valley Episcopal Church beginning at 2 p.m. Father Dennis Garrou will officiate. Interment will follow at the Cortez Cemetery. Francis was born Oct. 25, 1912, in Norwood, Colo., to Francis Marion Stockdale and Laura Bell (Booth) Stockdale. He passed away on Sunday, Oct. 31, 1999, at the Vista Grande Nursing Home. He was 87 years old. At the age of 15, Francis joined the National Guard and then in 1940 he enlisted with the Army and served his country during World War II. Francis married Josephine Mildred Jordan on May 1st in Abilene, Texas. He was a man of vision, founding the Basin Industrial Bank in Cortez, and developing the Paradise Village and McBride subdivisions. He also helped establish the first City Market store in Cortez. Francis also held numerous memberships here in Cortez. He was a charter member of the Cortez Elks Lodge No. 1789, a member of the Rotary Club, Cortez Chamber of Commerce, and a longtime member of the St. Barnabas Church in Cortez. His wife, Jo Stockdale, of Cortez survives him, as do his four children and their spouses, Charles and Peggy Stockdale, of Sun City, Ariz., Jon and Deidra Stockdale, Saundra and Garth Davies, and Cindy and Clay Dickson, all of Cortez. Francis leaves behind six grandchildren, Mike Stockdale, of Sheboygan, Wis., Stephanie Berger, of Denver, Colo., Chris Neal, of New Jersey, Kelly Neal, of Wyoming, and Brandon and Ashlee Dickson, both of Cortez; a sister, Celia Shultz, of Montrose, Colo., and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Memorial contributions can be made in Francis Stockdale's name with St. Barnabas of the Valley Episcopal Church. Services will be under the direction of the Ertel Funeral Home.
Graveside services for longtime resident, Myrtle Mae Meyer, will be held Friday, Nov. 5, 1999 at the Cortez Cemetery beginning at 2 p.m. Pastor Schwartz from the Seventh Day Adventist Church will officiate. A visitation period has been scheduled for Thursday evening at the Ertel Memorial Chapel from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Born the daughter of Susie Elizabeth and Ruben Williams, Myrtle was born in Montrose, Colo., on Dec. 27, 1919. She passed away at the Vista Grande Nursing Home on Saturday, Oct. 30, 1999. She was 79 years old. Myrtle is the beloved mother of eight children, Elizabeth, Ernest, Nancy, Lester, John, Jacquie, Art, and Herbie. Her children remember her as a very special mom, one they could always count on being there for them. Trained as a Licensed Practical Nurse, Myrtle worked in the Montrose and Cortez areas caring for others. After she had given up nursing, Myrtle spent several years working as a motel maid. Myrtle is survived by her children, Elizabeth Estep, and her husband, J.D., of Cortez, Ernest Whelchel, and his wife, Tanya, of Gillette, Wyo., Nancy Thurman, of Cortez, Lester Rice, and wife, Pat, of Morenci, Ariz., John Rice, of Dolores, Jacquie Allen, and her husband, Shannon, of Fernly, Nev., and Art Meyer, and his wife, Luann, of Cortez. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and five great great grandchildren; and a brother, Lee Williams, of Wasilla, Alaska. Myrtle was preceded in death by her husband, Art M. Meyer, in August, 1978; her son, Herbie Meyer, in 1980; three sisters, Clara Steinquller, Vida Patterson, and Bertha Barns; and a brother, Charles Williams. Funeral services for Mabel Higman, 82, of Cortez, will be held Thursday, Nov. 4, 1999, at the Ertel Memorial Chapel, beginning at 2 p.m. Burial will be at the Arriola Cemetery. Officiating will be Rev. Suzanne Listemann of the Cortez First United Methodist Church. Visitation is scheduled for Wednesday evening at the Ertel Memorial Chapel from 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. Mabel was born in Arriola, Colo., on July 9, 1917, to Frank and Ella (Parker) Milligan. She passed away at her home on Sunday, Oct. 31, 1999. Mabel married Raymond Higman in Dolores on Sept. 8, 1935. They celebrated more that 55 years of marriage before Raymond passed away in August of 1990. Mabel was a member of the Order of Eastern Star for 50 years, as well as a lifelong member of the Methodist Church. Mabel is survived by her two daughters and their husbands, Janet and Leo Dennison and Judith and Mike Loyd, both of Cortez; six grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren; her brother, Milford Milligan, of Dolores; and two sisters, Esther Reed and Norma Coppinger, both of Cortez. Preceding Mabel in death were her husband, parents, a daughter, Shirley Bard, and a son, Douglas Higman. Services will be conducted by the Ertel Funeral Home.
Graveside services for Norman Henry Darland, a lifelong resident of this area, will be held Wednesday, Nov. 3, 1999 at the Cortez Cemetery beginning at 10 a.m. Pastor Bob Cogburn of the Friendship Assembly of God Church will officiate. Visitation has been set for Tuesday afternoon at the Ertel Memorial Chapel between the hours of 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. Mr. Darland was born in Jetmore, Kans., to William Darland and Sophia (Kelch) Darland on May 14, 1909. He passed away at the Vista Grande Nursing Home on Monday, Nov. 1, 1999, at the age of 90. Norman is survived by his four daughters and their husbands, Guyrene and Gene Graffis, of Cortez, Pam and Gary Jordan, of Cortez, Debbie and Bill Oakes, of Dolores, and Rosemary and Keith Sperry, of Cortez; 12 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, and six step-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Ruth Branson, on Jan. 1, 1981; a son, Walter D. Darland; a grandson, Edward Graffis; his parents; one sister; and a half-brother. Orpha Willie Throckmorton Smith Orpha Willie Throckmorton Smith died Wednesday, Oct. 27, 1999, at the Valley Inn Care Center in Mancos at the age of 87. A memorial service under the direction of Hood Mortuary of Durango will be held at the Highway Church of Christ, Hwy. 666, at CR 23, northwest of Cortez at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 30, 1999. She was born near Elk City, Okla., the eleventh child of Marion Edmond Throckmorton and Ollie Cordelia Bills Throckmorton. Her father, born at Friendship, Tenn. in 1870, and her mother, born in Ripley, Miss., also in 1870, were true covered-wagon pioneers. They homesteaded a farm in the Cheyenne-Arapaho territory of Southwest Oklahoma in 1893. Orpha was born at the farm on June 14, 1912. After graduating from high school Orpha worked as a reporter for the newspaper in Blackwell, Okla. She was later trained to work as a tissue tech in the histology lab at St. Marys hospital in Enid, Okla., a job she truly loved. She married Carl Raymond Smith in October of 1932. He passed away in 1971. In 1975, she moved to Durango, and then to Cortez in 1994. She had been a member of the Church of Christ and faithful Christian believer for 73 years. She is survived by sons Shelby and wife Roberta Smith of Cortez and Kirby Smith and his wife Carol, of San Diego, Calif.; six grandchildren, Arthur and wife Renee of Athens, Ohio; Annette and husband Chuck of Pima, Ariz.; Bradley Paul of New York City; Mathew, Andrew and Kathryn Smith of Sand Diego, Calif.; and four great-grandchildren, Kayla, Kami, Koby and Kole Cotter of Pima. She will be buried beside her beloved husband, Carl, in Enid, Okla.
Kayla Lynn Grauberger, precious daughter, granddaughter and sister, passed away on Oct. 27, 1999 in the University of Michigan Medical Center, Annarbor, Mich. She was born Jan. 14, 1999, and was 9 1/2 months of age. Funeral services are set for Monday, Nov. 1 at 4 p.m. in the Cortez Four Corners Funeral Chapel. Reverend Pat Booth will officiate the services. Interment will follow the services in the Cortez Cemetery. A visitation will take place Sunday, Oct. 31 at the funeral chapel. Little Kayla, even though her time on this earth was short, brought great happiness to those she met. She loved being with people, especially other babies. Adolescents were captivated by her wonderful personality. Her love for others was always there. Kayla enjoyed and loved her nurses and doctors and all those who cared for her in the hospitals. Her favorite color was "Wal-Mart blue -- she also liked the water. Kayla Lynn Grauberger brought a full lifetime of smiles and happiness in just 9 1/2 months. She is survived by her loving mother, Terrie Ann Grauberger; loving grandparents Joel and Judy Grauberger; brothers David and Travis; uncle Lee Grauberger, all of Cortez. Charles E. Gorman, longtime Mancos resident, passed away Oct. 27, 1999 at the VA Hospital in Grand Junction. Mr. Gorman served his country in World War II, in the U.S. Army. He is survived by his daughter, Sherry Reynolds, and her husband, of Stillwater, Okla. Services are pending, with cremation tentatively planned. Interment will follow in Oklahoma, where his daughter resides.
Funeral services for lifelong resident Thelma Marie McCabe will be held Friday, Oct. 29, 1999, beginning at 10 a.m. at the Ertel Memorial Chapel. Interment will follow at the Cortez Cemetery. Rev. Dr. Lynn Evans of the Cortez First United Methodist Church will officiate. Thelma was born in Cortez on Aug. 10, 1918, to Leslie E. Gawith and Helen May (Englehart) Gawith. She passed away at the Valley Inn Nursing Home in Mancos on Oct. 25, 1999. She was 81 years old. Thelma was a graduate of Cortez Union High School. She married Francis M. McCabe on Feb. 18, 1938, in Aztec. N.M. She raised five sons, Dean, Jay, Pat, Rex, and Reed. Thelma worked in the high school cafeteria until 1962 and she then went to work for the Cortez J.C. Penney store. She remained there for 20 years. For those who shopped at the Cortez Penney store, Thelma was a familiar and pleasant face. Her interests involved her in the Cortez Garden Club and the Lake View Grange. She was also a member of the Four Corners Square Dance Club. Thelma is survived by her five sons and their wives, Dean and Roberta McCabe, of Tome, N.M.; Jay L. and Beth McCabe, of Cortez; Pat and Nene McCabe, of Gillette, Wyo.; Rex and Terry McCabe, of Cortez; and Reed and Nihla McCabe, of Dolores. She also leaves behind 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; two sisters and their husbands, Leona and Stan McCabe, of Dolores, and Nelda and Richard Lindsay, of Cortez. Preceding Thelma in death were her husband, Francis, in June of 1971; her parents; and two sisters, Verda Ping and Shirley Gawith. Mr. Willie Coyote, a lifelong resident of Towaoc, passed away Oct. 26, 1999 in the Southwest Memorial Hospital. He was 65. Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, Oct. 30, at 10 a.m. in the Cortez Four Corners Funeral Chapel with Reverend Father Joe McGuinnes officiating the service. Interment will follow in the Towaoc Cemetery. A visitation is set for Friday, Oct. 29, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the funeral chapel. A prayer service will be offered there on Friday at 4 p.m. Willie was born to Oyana Coyote and Inis Salt Coyote on Feb. 22, 1934, in Towaoc. He attended school there, and later furthered his education by attending business college in Farmington, N.M. Mr. Coyote was a former secretary for the Ute Mountain Ute Tribal Government. Willies special interests were playing the piano, accordion, and the organ. He also enjoyed beadwork and cooking. Mr. Willie Coyotes portrait hangs in the Denver International Airport. This was a very special honor for him. Willie Coyote is survived by his mother, Inis Salt of Towaoc; sister, Verna Coyote of Towaoc; aunt Leah Salt of Towaoc; nieces Caroline Coyote, Cass Winger and Annette Lopez, all of Towaoc; nephews Brian Coyote of Towaoc and Aaron Coyote of Stranford, M.O.; and numerous other relatives, nieces, nephews and dear friends. She passed away at the Golden Years Retirement Home in Cortez on Friday, Oct. 22, 1999. She was 85. Alma married Vernon Bryan Nichols on Feb. 14, 1934, in Monticello, Utah. They had three children, LaVerne, Norman, and Roberta. They celebrated 45 years of marriage until Vernon's death. Alma was preceded in death by husband, Vernon Bryan Nichols, and son, Norman Carol Nichols, grandson, Tray Davis, both parents, one sister and one brother. She is survived by daughter, LaVerne Hinton, and her husband, Dale, of Cortez, and daughter, Roberta Robinson, of Prescott Valley, Ariz. She is also survived by 20 grandchildren, Tom Davis and wife, Kathy, Deanna Hinton, Donna Small and husband, Don, Doris Spall and husband, Mike, Leslie Hinton and wife, Pat, Darla Huff, Steve Davee Hinton and his wife, William Whatley, Ronnie Whatley, Danny Whatley and wife, Dorsia, Deneta Jeter, Kerry Davis, Bryan Nichols and his wife; as well as 28 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild on the way. There are also two sisters, Ofie Miller, of Monticello, Utah, and Ruby Heer and husband, Hank, of Montrose, Colo.; a brother and his wife, Olin and Della Chapin, of Bayfield, Colo; a brother-in-law and his wife, Merle and Betty Nichols, of Pampa, Texas; a sister-in-law, Juanita Nichols, of Liberal, Kans.; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Willie R. (Bill) Bailey, a former long-time resident of Albuquerque, N.M., and recent resident of Madison House in Cortez, passed away Oct. 21, 1999, in the Vista Grande Nursing Home. He was 82. Maj. Bailey was born to Joseph Andrew and Rosa Harris Bailey on June 1, 1917, at Gravely, Ark. Maj. Bailey was retired from the United States Air Force and also from the New Mexico Department of Health and Human Services. A memorial service is planned for a later date at Madison House. Inurnment is also planned for a later date in the Santa Fe National Cemetery with full military rites. Maj. Bailey is survived by his wife, Violet, of Cortez; two daughters, Brenda Clark of Heber Springs, Ark., and Barbara Rightley of Cortez; a sister, Bernice Reid, Loving, N.M.; four grandchildren: Kyle and Shane Rightley of Cortez; Steven and Cynthia Clark, Heber Springs, Ark.; two great-grandchildren: Mason and Shelby Clark, Heber Springs, Ark. Charles Oren Kindig Graveside interment services for Charles Oren Kindig, a resident of Cortez, will be held Wednesday, Oct. 27, 1999 at the Cortez Cemetery. Mr. Kindig was cremated. Rev. Dr. Lynn Evans will officiate. Military services will be conducted by the Ute Mountain American Legion Post No. 75. Mr. Kindig passed away at his home in Cortez on Sunday, Oct. 17, 1999. He was 72. Charles was born July 26, 1927, in Grand Junction, Colo., to Gilbert Kindig and Helen May (Carlyle) Kindig. His son, Gregory Kindig of Cortez, survives him. Graveside services for former Cortez resident, Betty Click, will be held Saturday, Oct. 23, 1999, at the Crown Hill Cemetery in Denver, beginning at 2 p.m. Rev. Olon Lindemood of the Loveland First United Methodist Church will officiate. Betty passed away in Prescott, Ariz., where she had been a resident since 1991, on Tuesday, Oct. 19, 1999. She was 79 years old. Betty was born the daughter of H. Walter Baldwin Jr. and Helen (Irvine) Baldwin in Denver, on May 24, 1920. Betty had a deep love for her children and enjoyed crocheting as a favorite pastime. She leaves behind her beloved children, Cynthia Ann Carroll, of Phoenix, Ariz.; Sally Ann Maggart, and her husband, Woody, of Ft. Collins, Colo.; Jack Click, and his wife, Carol, of Cortez; Pete Click, and his wife, Carol, of Ankeny, Iowa; Terry Ann Kimbrel, and her husband, Jerry of Caon City, Colo.; and Elizabeth Ann Stinebrink, and her husband, Kurt, of Prescott, Ariz. Betty is also survived by 15 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren; her sisters, Annie Evans, Jane Howard, and Alma Sanderson; and her brother, Alan T. Baldwin. Preceding Betty in death were her husband, Wes Click; a daughter, Carol Ann Johnson; and one brother. Graveside services for Fred Victor Benson, a lifelong Colorado resident, will be held Friday, Oct 22, 1999 at the Cortez Cemetery beginning at 10 a.m. Jim Spurlock will officiate. Visitation is scheduled for Thursday afternoon from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. at the Ertel Memorial Chapel. Fred was born in Lake City, Colo., to Carl Victor Benson and Emma Augusta (Johansson) Benson on Feb. 5, 1909. He died at the Valley Inn Nursing Home on Wednesday, Oct 20, 1999. He was 90 years old. Fred was a rancher in the Lake City area, raising cattle. He also enjoyed prospecting. A very self-sufficient man; if Fred needed something, he made it. He was very dependable and was known for keeping his word. Mostly, though, Fred was very loving and lovable. Four brothers survive Fred. They are Henry Benson, Paul Benson, Clarence Benson, and Art Benson. His dear friends, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Spurlock, with whom he had lived with for a number of years, will also miss his presence. William Edward (Bill) Baldwin died on Oct. 12, 1999, in Cortez at the age of 48. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 18, at the Hudson Phillips Funeral Home Chapel in Holdenville, Okla., with the Rev. Meredith Robinson officiating. Interment was at Holdenville Cemetery. Mr. Baldwin was born in Holdenville on Jan. 18, 1951, to Robert R. and Edna Mae Baldwin. He was a highly decorated Vietnam Veteran, having served his country from 1969 to 1972. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Rufus Baldwin and Edna Mae Baldwin, and his oldest brother, Robert Ronald Baldwin. He is survived by three sons: Billy Baldwin of Wisconsin, Brian Baldwin of Welston, Okla., and Minor Baldwin of Oklahoma City, Okla. Also surviving are two brothers, John M. (Mike) Baldwin of Eufaula, Okla., and Calvin Thomas (Tommy) Baldwin of Porum, Okla.

Pastor Kenneth Norton of the Calvary Baptist Church in Montezuma Creek, Utah will officiate. Emerson was born in Aneth, Utah on Dec. 15, 1953, to Johnny Boo Silas and Nancy (Silversmith) Silas. He passed away at San Juan Regional Medical Center on Saturday, Oct. 16, 1999. He is survived by three brothers, Bobby Boo Silas, Ben B. Silas, and Benjamin Silas, all of Aneth, Utah; and a sister, Betty Sakizzie, also of Aneth. Emerson's parents preceded him in death. Services will be under the direction of the Ertel Funeral Home.

James was born the son of Eva Pearl (Goforth) Hasty and Lester Noel Hasty on April 13, 1935, in St. Louis, Mo. He passed away in Cortez on Saturday, Oct. 16, 1999, at the age of 64. The Hasty family moved to McElmo Canyon in 1941 and in 1944 they moved north of Dove Creek to the Burn area. James married Shirley Fury in Fruita, Colo., on Aug. 22, 1961. They had celebrated 38 years of marriage. James loved to play golf with his lifelong friends, Paul Spitzer and Mike Mulligan. He was also a member of the Cortez Elks Lodge #1789. He leaves behind his beloved family which includes his wife, Shirley, of Dove Creek; his daughter Lori A. Hasty Haley, and her husband, Don, of Cortez; two grandsons, Ryan J. Haley and Randy L. Haley; his mother, Pearl Hasty, of Dove Creek; two sisters, Donna M. Nielson, and her husband, Bill, of Spring Creek, Nev., and Wilma L. Kerr, and her husband, Cal, of Dove Creek; and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins. His brother, Bobby Hasty, preceded him in death in 1992. Funeral services for Frances Phelps, a lifelong resident of this area, will be held Friday, Oct. 15, 1999, at the Cortez LDS Church beginning at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Conducting will be Bishop Duane Lanier. Visitation is scheduled for Thursday afternoon from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. at the Ertel Memorial Chapel. Frances was born March 31, 1909, in Mancos, Colo., to Fred and Mabyn (Morefield) Armstrong. She passed away at the Valley Inn Nursing Home on Monday, Oct. 11, 1999. She was 90 years old. Frances married McKinley Phelps in Mancos on July 13, 1930. McKinley preceded her in death in 1969. Frances was a member of the Dolores Senior Center. She loved gardening and fishing. She leaves behind her beloved children, Evelyn Burnham, of Newark, Calif., Dr. McKinley Phelps Jr., of Albuquerque, N.M., Roland Phelps, of Olathe, Colo., Dorothy McCormick, of Stratton, Colo., Frank Phelps, of Dolores, Anna Grasser, of Wauneta, Neb., and Fred Phelps, of Cortez. Frances is also survived by 28 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren, as well as two brothers, Lewis Armstrong, of Phoenix, Ariz., and Howard Armstrong, of Bradenton, Fla.; and her sister, Margaret Kasal, of Las Cruces, N.M. Preceding Frances in death were her parents, her husband, and three children, Robert Phelps, Laura McWilliams, and Bonnie Johnson. Ertel Funeral Home will be conducting the services.
Memorial services for Benjamin Alfred Fox, 76, of Cortez, and formerly of Peoria, Ill., are set for Friday, Oct. 15, 1999 at the Cortez Elks Lodge beginning at 11 a.m. Mr. Fox was cremated. Ben was born in Spokane, Wash., on Aug. 28, 1923, the son of Benjamin and Mina Louise Strobridge Fox. He passed away at Mercy Medical Center in Durango, on Monday morning, Sept. 27, 1999. Ben married Eleanor M. McWilliams in Arcadia, Calif., on May 11, 1943. Eleanor passed away in April of 1996. They had celebrated over 50 years of marriage. Ben earned his Bachelor of Art degree from the University of Oregon. He also held a Masters degree. He began serving his country in 1942, in the Air Force during World War II, the Korean Conflict, and Vietnam. Ben retired as a Master Sergeant on June 1, 1968. He then moved to Rockford, Ill., where he worked for Sundstrand. In 1970, Ben and his family moved to Peoria, where he retired from WABCO in 1988. Upon his retirement, he and Eleanor moved to Cortez. As all who have known Ben know, he was quite a busy and giving man. He was actively involved in the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks, the American Legion, the Presbyterian Church of Cortez, Mariners of the Presbyterian Church, the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), the American Radio Relay League and the Southwest Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. Ben is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Kevin and Amy Fox, of Cortez; two granddaughters, Sharon Elaine Fox of Pleasant Hill, Calif. and Christine Michelle Fox of Austin, Texas; one grandson, Matthew Eric Fox, of Mahomet, Ill.; a daughter-in-law, Rachel Ann Somsen Fox of Mahomet.; and a sister, Lavonne Lacy, of Fossil, Ore. In addition to his wife and parents, Ben was preceded in death by his son, Gerald Alfred Fox, on July 4, 1997; his daughter, Vicki Lynn Fox, on March 3, 1999; and grandson, David Keith Fox. Funeral services for Archie House Sr., a lifelong resident of Towaoc, will be held Wednesday, Oct. 13, 1999, at the Towaoc Presbyterian Church beginning at 10 a.m. Burial will be at the Towaoc Cemetery. Archie was born to Asa House and Pearl Root Laner on March 20, 1941. He died at his home in Towaoc, on Saturday, Oct. 9, 1999. He was 58 years old. Archie is survived by his mother, Pearl Root Laner, of Towaoc; six children, Yvonne House, Archie House Jr., Deanne House Wall, Stephanie House, Arlan House, and William House, all of Towaoc; 16 grandchildren and one great-grandchild; four brothers, Phillip Laner, Darwin House, Franklin Laner, and Alton House, all of Towaoc; and a sister, Glenna Rogers, also of Towaoc. Ertel Funeral Home will conduct the services.
Graveside services for Imo E. Lowe, a longtime resident of this area, will be held Saturday, Oct. 9, 1999 at the Peel Cemetery beginning at 11 a.m. James Sanders will officiate. Mrs. Lowe passed away at the Vista Grande Nursing Home on Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999, at the age of 89. She was born the second child of Jefferson Davis Knuckles and Clara Catherine Ann (Buffington) Knuckles on Aug. 21, 1910, in Ellington, Mo. Imo married James George Lowe in Waterloo, Ill., on Nov. 11, 1933. From this union two children, James and Susan, were born. Imo and Jim moved to Cortez in 1946 to help Imo's parents run the Navajo Campground. They later moved to Dove Creek where they owned and operated the Frontier Bar and Restaurant. 1955 found the Lowes moving to Dolores to run the Dolores Hogan, now known as the Rio Grande Southern Bed and Breakfast. Imo and Jim accepted the position of Jailer and Matron for the Cortez City Jail in 1961, remaining at this job for 15 years. After that time, Imo also worked at the Cortez Addictions Recovery Unit and at the Goldtop Pool Hall. Imo is remembered as a loving, happy and caring person. She could always laugh even in the midst of trying times. Her family and friends were the joy of her life. On Dec. 1, 1954, Imo, her mother, and six of Imo's sisters all joined the Order of Eastern Star. This was a momentous occasion for them all. Preceding Imo in death were here husband, James Lowe, in August, 1995; her daughter, Susan Axtell; her parents; and her grandson, Steven Axtell. She is survived by her son, James C. Cooper, of Las Vegas, Nev.; five grandchildren, Cooper, Kim, Kristy, Marty, and Misty, and seven great-grandchildren; by her sisters, Maude Evans and Bertha Brewer, both of the Cortez area, Louie Randolph, Irene Randolph, Ruth Saunders, and Maxine Sanders, all of the Dove Creek, Egnar area; and numerous nieces and nephews. Ertel Funeral Home will be in charge of the services.
Funeral services for Rodney B. Horrocks, 81, of Mancos, will be held Saturday, Oct. 9, 1999 at the Mancos L.D.S. Church beginning at 3 p.m. Burial will be at the Old Mormon Cemetery. Officiating will be Bishop Dan Whitehead. Born April 22, 1918, in Vernal, Utah, he was the son of Joseph and Rosella (Broadhead) Horrocks. He passed away at the Valley Inn Nursing Home on Monday Oct. 4, 1999. Rodney married Phoebe M. Hatch in Vernal, Utah on Dec. 24, 1936. Phoebe died in February, 1996, months short of their 60th anniversary. Rodney was a lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Rodney is survived by his children and their spouses, R. Dwain and Barbara Horrocks, of Spanish Fork, Utah, Melvyn J. and Esther Horrocks, of Mancos, LeRoy K. and Jane Horrocks, of Roy, Utah, Neil R. and Lila Horrocks, of Midvale, Utah, and Sherene and Patrick Goddard, of Dolores. Two children, Gayla Zufelt and Doyel Horrocks, preceded him in death. Rodney also leaves behind 33 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren, as well as his sister, Edna Broadhead, of Washington. Vivian Washburn Redd died Oct. 6, 1999 in Provo, Utah. She was born July 28, 1913 in Blanding, Utah to Francis Morley and Hazel Stolworthy Washburn. She attended school in Kirtland, New Mexico and received her nursing degree from Mercy Hospital in Denver, Colorado, in 1934. She married Alma J. Redd, Aug. 17, 1936 in the Salt Lake Temple. They were lifetime residents of Blanding, Utah and were in the livestock business in Colorado and Utah for many years. She was preceded in death by her husband and grandson, Chris, in 1988. She is survived by her children, Patsy Shumway, Harold Redd, Gretchen Bray, and Marta Brown, 22 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. She also has two sisters, Lydia Moffett and Ardel Graham of Provo, Utah. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, October 12, 1999, at noon in the Blanding South L.D.S. Chapel. Burial will be in the Blanding Cemetery. Funeral director is Don W. Palmer.
Maureen G. Chapman, 49, of San Luis Obispo, Calif., died Friday, Oct. 1 at Stanford University Hospital. She was surrounded by family and friends. A cheerful celebration in Maureen's honor is being planned for next spring; please contact the family for details. Cremation has taken place. Maureen was born on Aug. 12, 1950 in Colorado Springs, Colo. and lived in Cortez for 22 years, where she raised two fine sons. She helped develop and operate the family business in Cortez and San Luis Obispo, where she had moved to in 1996. She enjoyed hiking, children, friends, reading, watching wildlife and spending time by the ocean. She is survived by Jim, her husband of 30 years and former City Engineer of Cortez; their sons, Ryan and Ben, all of San Luis Obispo; her mother, Albina Clow; sisters Patricia Swaen and Jeanne Faris, all of Denver; and brothers John Smithlin of Redwood City; Mike Smithlin of Boston and Tom Smithlin of Colorado Springs.
Graveside services for Bearl Moore, a longtime resident of Cortez, will be held Thursday, Oct. 7, 1999, at the Cortez Cemetery beginning at 10 a.m. Visitation is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. at the Ertel Memorial Chapel. Bearl was born July 3, 1926, in Rose, Okla., to Ellis James and Jennie Well (Sisco) Moore. He passed away at his home on Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999, at the age of 73. Bearl worked many years in this area as a carpenter. During World War II Bearl served his country in the Army. He is survived by his children, Randy Bearl Moore, Holly Anne Moore, and Buddy Burr Clark Moore, all of Cortez; four grandchildren, Cody Moore, Keagan Moore, John Moore, and Cara Moore; two brothers, Wilkie Moore, of Medford, Ore., and Audie Moore, of Denver, Colo.; and three sisters, Bessie Looney, of Locust Grove, Okla., Pearl McManus, and Mary Ashbaugh, both of Cortez. Charles A. "Chuck" Wright passed away Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999 in Durango. He was 73. Funeral services were held Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2 p.m. at the Hood Mortuary Chapel in Durango, with Pastor Gerald Brush officiating. Interment will follow in Greenmount Cemetery. Mr. Wright was born Sept. 2, 1926 to John W. and Ethel C. Wright, in Rattlesnake Butte, Colo. He has been a resident of the area since 1931. He served in World War II in the Navy and received an honorable discharge for his service. Chuck has been a farmer and rancher his entire life and was a member of the Hereford Association and the American Farm Bureau. Chuck had a wonderful sense of humor and would talk to anyone for hours. He died a dignified death; the cause of which was a heart attack. He is survived by his daughter, Jan Jackson of Albuquerque, N.M.; son Steve and Wife Joyce Wright of Arboles, Colo.; sisters Marion Elwell of Rye, Colo.; Eleanor Madill of Pueblo, Colo.; Nell Clark of Pagosa Springs; and Maxine Kolz of Montrose, Colo.; brothers Norman Wright of Ignacio; George Briar of Klamath Falls, Ore.; and Kenneth Briar of White City, Ore; his former wife, Lois B. Wright of Albuquerque; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Harold Wright and Ralph Briar.

Interment was at the Towaoc Cemetery. Mary Ann was born in Cortez on Nov. 11, 1953, to Juan Bancroft and Corrine Cuthair Bancroft. She passed away at Southwest Memorial Hospital on Monday, Oct. 4, 1999, at the age of 45. She is survived by her husband, Juan Peabody Sr., of Towaoc; daughters, Titania Dooley, of Towaoc, Stephanie Bagnato, of Weaverville, Calif., and Melinda Walton, of Bloomfield, N.M.; six grandchildren; two sisters, Pearl Root Laner, Florence Cuthair Bancroft Silas; and her brother, Freddie Bancroft. Services were conducted by the Ertel Funeral Home.

Interment will be held in Massena, Iowa beginning with funeral services at the Massena Baptist Church on Saturday, Oct. 9, 1999 at 1 p.m. Burial will follow at the Massena Center Cemetery. Patsy was born in Anita, Iowa on Jan. 20, 1939, to Elwood Jensen and Marie (Odem) Jensen. She died at Southwest Memorial Hospital on Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999. She was 60 years old. Patsy and John Herman Ihnen were married Apr. 6, 1958, in Massena, Iowa. This past year they had celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary. Patsy and John moved to Cortez in 1980. She was a member of the Humane Society. She leaves behind her loving family which consists of her husband, John, of Cortez; two daughters, Sue Ihnen and Donna Ihnen, both of Laughlin, Nev.; two sons and their wives, Tim and Dody Ihnen, and Terry and Trish Ihnen, all of Cortez; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild; and two sisters and their husbands, Kay and Jim Olson, and Peggy and Jerry Carr, all of Corning, Iowa. Her son, Mark Ihnen, preceded her in death in December of 1979. Services were conducted by the Ertel Funeral Home.
Funeral services for Ruth Irene Kibel, a longtime resident of Dove Creek, were held Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999, at the Dove Creek First Baptist Church at 2 p.m. Burial took place at the Dove Creek Cemetery. Ruth, the eldest of nine children, was born March 6, 1929, in Kingstown, Kans., to David A. and Ruby Irene (Stice) Smith. She passed away at her home in Dove Creek on Friday, Oct. 1, 1999, at the age of 70. On May 15, 1944, Ruth married Ross C. Kibel in Sharon Springs, Kans. They moved to the Slickrock / Dove Creek area in the early 1950s. There she raised her 14 children. She was a loving wife and mother. Ruth's other interests included crocheting and sewing and was involved with the Cahone Recreation Center. Ruth leaves behind eight sons, Gerald Kibel, and his wife, Leatha Kaie, of Lakewood, Colo., Wayne Kibel, and his wife, Dorothy, of Grand Junction, Colo., Dale Kibel, of Elko, Nev., David Kibel, of Grand Junction, Colo., Ross Kibel, of Cortez, Gary Kibel and Larry Kibel, both of Dove Creek, and Tony Kibel, of Grand Junction, Colo.; six daughters, Ruby Shore, and her husband, Alvin, of Bosque Farms, N.M., Phyllis Mulvey, of Sacramento, Calif., Darlene Perkins, of Cañon City, Colo., Hazel Pursse, of Denver, Colo., Ruth Wassemiller, and her husband, Jerry, of Oakley, Kans., and Verna Meyers, of Canton, Kansas. She has 29 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. Ruth is also survived by five brothers, Dan Smith, of Alliance, Neb., Paul Smith, of Pine Bluffs, Wyo., Raymond Smith, of Abilene, Kans., Gene Smith, of Yuma, Colo., and Dean Smith, of Goodland, Kans.; and two sisters, Helen Paramore, of Little Rock, Kans., and Florence Beal, of Brigsdale, Colo. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ross Kibel, in November of 1982, and by a brother, Arthur Smith. Services were under the direction of the Ertel Funeral Home.
Funeral services for John Leonard Pinder, 65, of Lewis, were held Wednesday, Sept. 28, 1999, at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church beginning at 10 a.m. Burial followed at the Summit Ridge Cemetery. Father Kevin Novack officiated. John was born in Leon, Iowa, to Estella Laura Shields Pinder and John E. Pinder on Sept. 26, 1933. He passed away at his home in Lewis on Friday, Sept. 24, 1999. John married Josephine Mary Arriola in Raton, N.M., on Aug. 22, 1952. The 28 years that he served with the Denver Police Department are marked with many notable achievements. He was the first officer in his department to be a K-9 handler and he reached the Master Rank as a police combat shooter. John worked as a detective for five years and in March of 1970, he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant, which he held until his retirement in 1985. John was also a Navy veteran. His memberships included the National Rifle Association and the Police Protective Association. He acted as a shooting instructor and assisted the Montezuma County Sheriff's Department. He was an avid sportsman, enjoyed scuba diving, and in his retirement, building log houses. John leaves behind his wife, Josephine M. Pinder, of Lewis; a daughter, Connie F. Pinder, of Denver; two sons, John E. Pinder, and his wife, Karen, of Denver, and Donald J. Pinder, of Lewis; and his three grandchildren, Kisha Ann Pinder, Christopher John Pinder, and Elizabeth Colleen Pinder. A memorial service for Robert Lee Loos, long-time Durango resident, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 2, 1999, at Hood Mortuary Chapel. Mr. Loos passed away Sept. 28. He was 54. Mr. Loos was born Sept. 8, 1945, to DeLasso and Billie Nell Loos in Duncan, Okla. He lived in the Durango area for most of his life, and is a 1963 graduate of Durango High School. He graduated from Fort Lewis College in 1969 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. Robert married Deborah Sittner on April 30, 1967, and taught school from 1970-73 in Zuni, N.M., and in Ignacio from 1973-86. He also coached track and football at those schools. Robert started his own business, L & R Trading Company, which dealt in Indian jewelry from 1971-1973. He was also a real estate salesman with Campbell Realty in 1978. Robert Loos served as a county delegate to the State Political Assembly in 1978. Diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 1972, he became president of the Central Colorado Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society in 1983, and was chosen by members as the Multiple Sclerosis Father of the Year that same year. In 1984, he was chosen by Fort Lewis College Alumni to serve on the Alumni Board of Directors. He was also chosen as teacher of the year in Ignacio in 1987. He enjoyed hunting, camping, outdoor activities and music, serving as DJ at many high school dances in Ignacio during his teaching years. Robert Loos is survived by his parents, DeLasso and Billie Nell Loos of Durango; daughter, Sonya Meador of Hesperus; son, Justin Loos of Durango; brothers Phillip Loos of Colorado Springs and Richard Loos of San Antonio, Texas; sisters, Anita Zellitti of Durango and Kim Rayburn of Odem, Texas; his former wife, Deborah Rowe of Durango; and granddaughters Kaylynne Loos of Durango and Lacey Jo Meador of Hesperus. Britton, 87, of Larchwood Inns in Grand Junction, Colo., and former Cortez resident, will be held Friday, Oct. 1, 1999 at the Bethel Baptist Church beginning at 1 p.m. Interment will follow at the Summit Ridge Cemetery. Pastor Brad Ramsey will officiate. Visitation is scheduled for Friday morning from 9 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. at the Ertel Memorial Chapel. Mrs. Britton was born to Harry Lee and Fannie (Reno) Waters on July 19, 1912, in Pattonsburg, Mo. She passed away at Community Hospital in Grand Junction on Monday, Sept. 27, 1999. Ellen married Clarence C. Britton in Kim, Colo., on April 16, 1930. He passed away in Dec., 1987. During her lifetime, it was Ellen's custom to make quilts for all of her children and grandchildren. It was especially hard on Ellen when several years ago she had a stroke and was unable to resume her quilting for her beloved family. Prior to her move to Grand Junction, Ellen was very involved with the Cortez Senior Center. She found that commitment to be very important to her. Those left behind are her children and their spouses, Clifford and Kay Britton, of Grand Junction, Colo., Philip Britton, of Raymond, Alberta, Canada, Hazel and Brown Stratton, of Grand Junction, Nora and Fred Like, of Folsom, N.M., Larry and Ardie Britton, of Cortez, and Lois and Charles Rogers, of Osborn, Mo.; 21 grandchildren, 23 great- grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild; a brother Lyman Waters, of Dolores; and a sister, Emma Kinkade, also of Dolores. Memorial services for Ernest Edward (Ed) Higman, a lifelong resident of Cortez, will be held at the Ertel Memorial Chapel on Wednesday, Sept. 29, 1999, beginning at 2 p.m. Ed passed away at his home on Thursday, Sept. 23, 1999. He was 85 years old. Edward was born the fourth child of Mary Ann (Wellington) and Ernest Higman on Jan. 5, 1914, in Beulah, Colo. Ed resided in the Beulah community for the first 23 years of his life. He attended Beulah Grade School and Cortez High School. On January 2, 1938, Ed married Leona Ruth Smith in Cortez. Ed was hired as an apprentice baker at the Kermod's Cortez Bakery. After Ed was injured at the bakery, he and his lifelong friend, Charles Hampton, became loggers near Mancos. Ed and Ruth moved to Denver in the early 1940's where Ed worked once again as a baker. He answered draft calls during World War II but did not serve in the military. Ed began his highway maintenance career in Montezuma County and in 1949 a promotion took the couple to the San Luis Valley. Ed worked out of Alamosa and Del Norte. After 30 years of plowing snow, much of which was on Wolf Creek Pass, Ed retired in 1976. Ed and Ruth returned to Cortez where they lived an active retirement. Ruth died August 26, 1996. Preceding him in death were his parents, an infant brother, Leslie Hart, his sister, Marjorie (Herman) Hampton, three brothers, Ralph, Ronald, and Cecil Higman. A sister, Kate (Ace) Asa survives him as do his family of nieces and nephews. Ed was past president of the San Luis Valley Firemen's Association, and Past Grand Chancellor of the Coronado Lodge 25 of the Knights of Pythias in Del Norte. He was also a member of the Cortez Fire and Rescue team. He was a skilled fisherman, golfer, bowler and hunter. Ed was a devoted father and mentor to his many nieces and nephews and will always be remembered for the lessons he taught them. Funeral services for Marjorie Fern Abeln Garza, 77, of Cortez, will be held Tuesday, Sept. 28, 1999, at the Ertel Memorial Chapel beginning at 2 p.m. Mr. Hunt Zumwalt of the Cortez Church of Christ will officiate. Cremation will follow the services. Mrs. Garza passed away at Southwest Memorial Hospital on Thursday, Sept. 23, 1999. She was born in Garden City, Kansas, to Ray and Margaret McDermott Likes on Nov. 13, 1921. Marjorie worked as a nurse at Southwest Memorial Hospital for more than 20 years. Her children, Harold Abeln, and his wife, Susan, of San Clemente, Calif., Bill Abeln, of Farmington, N.M., and Marsha Jones, and her husband, Charles, of Pasadena, Texas, survive her. She also leaves behind nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and her sister, Velma Tate, of Farmington, N.M. Her son, Louis "Darrell" Abeln preceded her in death as did her two husbands, Louis J. Abeln, in 1964, and Al Garza in 1983. Memorial services for Joe Lyle Castle, 67, of Dolores, will be held Monday, Sept. 27, at the Dolores Community Center beginning at 3 p.m. Joe was born in Durango, Colo., on May 19, 1932 to George L. and Genevieve Ebler Castle. He passed away at the Vista Grande Nursing Home on Wednesday, Sept. 22, 1999. Joe was a lifelong resident of La Plata and Montezuma counties. He spent most of his life as a long haul truck driver and ranched as a sideline. He enjoyed working as a guide for hunting outfitters. Joe loved to fish and was a great cook. He is survived by three sons, Bret Castle, of Dennison, Texas, Pat Castle, of Gilmer, Texas, and Jay Castle, of Cypress Springs, Texas; his daughter, Nichole Harrison, of Longview, Texas; four grandchildren; a sister, Georgia Weems, of Punta Gorda, Fla.; and two nieces. Arrangements were made through the Ertel Funeral Home.
Funeral services for Elsie May Hinkle Stanley, a lifelong resident of Lewis, will be held Saturday, Sept. 25, at the Ertel Memorial Chapel beginning at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at the Lewis Cemetery. Elsie was born the daughter of Warner David Hinkle and May Bell Powell Hinkle on Dec. 14, 1906, in Stillwater, Okla. She passed away at the Pine Street Care Center on Wednesday, Sept. 22, 1999, at the age of 92. She and Ollis Vere Stanley married in Lewis, Colo., in 1928. He preceded her in death in 1984. Elsie and Ollis ran the Lewis Post Office and gas station for many years, with Elsie serving as Postmaster for 20 years. She was a member of the Lewis Friendship Club and the Methodist Church. Those surviving her are her two sons and their wives, Richard and Betty Stanley, of Lewis, Colo., and Robert and Marlene Stanley, of Houston, Texas; 10 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren; and her sister, Iris McAfee, of Lewis. In addition to her parents and her husband, Elsie was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Suzanne Stanley. Ertel Funeral Home will be in charge of the funeral services.
Memorial services for Arveda Grace Hawk Wolford, a lifelong resident of Cortez, will be held Sunday, September 26, 1999 at the Cortez First United Methodist Church beginning at 2 p.m. Arveda died on Wednesday, September 8, 1999, at Madison House in Cortez. She was 90 years old. She was born on February 20, 1909, at Buelah, Colo., the fourth child of Gertie Mae Hill Hawk and Arthur Hawk. They moved to the Cortez area the year of her birth. Arveda attended Cortez High School and Western State College, graduating in 1928. She began her teaching career at Aztec School, nine miles south of Cortez. She subsequently taught at Blue Door, Downey, Mesa, and Kemper Schools, in all, 20 years in Montezuma County. Arveda is a member of the First United Methodist Church of Cortez and a Past Matron of the Order of Eastern Star, Cortez Chapter. She is survived by two daughters, Donna Jean Rogers, of Vacaville, Calif., and T. Lynne Rains, of Deary, Idaho; two sons, Wayne Wolford, of Grand Junction, Colo., and Dean Wolford, of Durango, Colo.; 10 granddaughters, two grandsons, and 14 great grandchildren. Her husband of 58 years, Theral D. "Pete" Wolford, preceded her in death in 1988. Memorial contributions can be made in Arveda Wolford's name with Madison House, 120 S. Madison Avenue, Cortez. Arrangements are being handled through the Ertel Funeral Home.
Graveside services for Virginia Rose Lee will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday Sept. 22,1999, at the Dove Creek Cemetery. Visitation is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 21, starting at 3 to 6 p.m. at the Ertel Memorial Chapel. Virginia was born on Aug. 25, 1911, in Edgewater, Colo. She died Sept. 16, 1999, at the Valley Inn Nursing Home in Mancos. Virginia is survived by one nephew, Allen W. Lee from Dolores, two nieces: Callie Maxine Miller from Grand Junction, and Norma Jane Butler from Hot Springs, Ark. She was preceded in death by her parents, Victor Henry Lee and Hattie Moore Lee. She was a 50+ year member of the Radiant Chapter #12 Order of Eastern Star in Denver, Colo. Arrangements were made through the Ertel Funeral Home.
Memorial services for Ariel "Dee" Jones, a resident of Rico, were held Sunday, September 19, 1999 at the Rico Community Church beginning at 2 p.m. Rev. Jim Patton officiated. Following the memorial services, a potluck was held at the Rico Courthouse. Ariel was born the daughter of Charles B. and Ariel Civilla Lobberecht Strandquist on June 25, 1934, in Brooklyn, New York. She died at St. Mary's Hospital in Grand Junction, Colo., on Tuesday, September 14, 1999, at the age of 65. Ariel had worked as an ICU nurse at Southwest Memorial Hospital for 18 years. She is survived by her three sons, Mark E. Jones, and his wife, Shelly, of Grand Junction, Colo., G. David Jones, of Bend, Ore., and Todd Jones, and his wife, Kim, of Rico, Colo.; three grandchildren, Wyatt Mathew Jones, of Rico, Amanda D. Jones, of Grand Junction, Colo., and Tyler Jones, of Bend, Ore.; a brother, Bud Strandquist, of Denver, Colo.; two nieces, and numerous cousins, and friends. Memorial contributions can be made in Ariel Jones' name with the Rico Fire Department. Arrangements were made through the Ertel Funeral Home.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, September 14, 1999 for Ida Harvey, 77, of Rockhead, Utah. Services were conducted at the Montezuma Creek LDS Church at 10 a.m. with Bishop Leo Platero officiating. Interment followed at the family cemetery at Rockhead. Mrs. Harvey was born March 3, 1922, in Aneth, Utah to Tony and Feddie Clah. She passed away at the Northern Navajo Medical Center in Shiprock on Friday, September 10, 1999. Her husband Ben Harvey, of Rockhead, Utah survives her. Services were conducted by the Ertel Funeral Home.
Funeral services for Mary Adell Coppinger, a lifelong resident of this area, will be held Thursday, September 16, 1999, at the Mancos L.D.S. Church beginning at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Bishop Dan Whitehead will officiate. Mary was born in Dolores, Colo., on March 21, 1919, to Leon Mulnix and Edna Kuykendall Mulnix. She passed away at San Juan Regional Medical Center in Farmington, on Sunday, September 12, 1999, at the age of 80. Mary was very active in her surrounding communities. Volunteering her time to others, she served on the Mancos Library Board for 9 years, worked as an Outreach worker in Mancos and Dolores for 5 years, and for more than seven years she volunteered at the Mancos Senior Center. Mary was a member of the Business and Professional Women's Organization, the Mancos Ladies Auxiliary for 25 years, and for 50 years she belonged to the Mount Lookout Grange. In 1999, Mary was named Mancos Days Queen. Those surviving her are her sons and their wives, Delbert and Pam Coppinger, of Mancos, and Bill and Gwen Stephens, of Greeley, Colo.; her daughter, Roberta Greenlee, of Cortez; and her grandchildren, Farrell Greenlee, Kirk Coppinger, Miki Hone, Kale Coppinger, Cassie Coppinger, and Amy Stephens. Her parents and nine siblings preceded her in death. Services will be under the direction of the Ertel Funeral Home.
Memorial services for James Lester "Jim" Baughman, 65, of Cortez, will be held Tuesday, September 14, 1999, at the Ute Mountain American Legion Post #75 beginning at 11 a.m. Pastor Jimmy Kennedy will officiate. Interment services will be held Sunday, October 10, 1999, at the Pulaski Cemetery in Pulaski, Iowa. Jim was born October 1, 1933, in Bloomfield, Iowa to Harlan Tracy and Florence Iola Bollman Baughman. He died Thursday, September 9, 1999, at Southwest Memorial Hospital in Cortez. On August 9, 1953, Jim married Carolyn Mae Downey in Pulaski, Iowa. They had just celebrated their 46th wedding anniversary. Jim loved pheasant and quail hunting, as well as fishing. He had been a member of the Masons for 25 years, and also was a Shriner. He belonged to the Cortez Elks Lodge #1789. Jim's work career in the Cortez area included working for Nielson's, Mountain Gravel, Perry McDonald Construction, and Triple L Construction as a heavy equipment operator. Jim leaves behind to mourn his death, his wife, Carolyn Baughman, of Cortez; his daughters, Vicki Lough, and her husband, Jim, of Bloomfield, Iowa, Connie Baughman, and her friend, Mark, of Mesa, Ariz., Robin Carver, and her husband, Alvin, of Cortez, and Sandi Pierce, and her husband, Donny, also of Mesa, Ariz.; his son, Kyle Baughman, and his wife, Gayla, of West Des Moines, Iowa; ten grandchildren, two great grandchildren; two sisters, and one brother. Memorial contributions can be made in Jim Baughman's name with the Ute Mountain American Legion Post #75, 320 N. Harrison, Cortez. Graveside services for Sallie Amelia Collom, a former resident of Cortez and current resident of Sacramento, Calif., will be held Saturday, September 11, 1999 at the Cortez Cemetery beginning at 2 p.m. Pastor Jonathan Bland will officiate. Sallie was born June 14, 1912, in Aspermont, Texas, to William Thomas and Henrietta Utley Swink. She passed away in Sacramento on Monday, September 6, 1999, at the age of 87. She is survived by her children, Thaddeus Collom, of California, Val Ray Collom, of Arizona, Joanne Collier, Jeannie Roberts, A. B. Collom, Eula Parish, Alvin Collom, and Jerry Collom, all of California; and 46 grandchildren and 89 great-grandchildren. Ertel Funeral Home will be conducting the services.
Graveside services for Josephine Theodora Holder, a resident of Mancos, were held Wednesday, September 15, 1999, at the Webber Cemetery beginning at 10 a.m. Elder Clyde Eugene Holder officiated. Mrs. Holder died Friday, September 10, 1999, at Southwest Memorial Hospital. She was 70. She was born July 12, 1929, in Mancos, Colo., to James Theodore and Minnie Dorothy Ewing Bailey. Her husband, Clyde Holder, of Mancos, survives her; as well as her children, Cary D. Srader, Roberta Melina Srader, and Craig Hood, all of Sacramento, Calif.; step children Gene Holder, of Fruita, Colo., Sharon Singer, of Phoenix, Ariz., Betty Welch, of Cortez, Leslie Gregory, of Sullivan, Ill., and Tracy Simmons, of Mancos, Colo.; 19 grandchildren and three great grandchildren; her sister, Stella Bauer, of Mancos; and a brother-in-law, Kenny Bauer, also of Mancos. Josephine's son, Ted Srader, preceded her in death in 1998. Ertel Funeral Home conducted the services.
Lloyd Ray Logsdon, a resident of rural Dolores, passed away Monday, Sept. 6, 1999, at his residence. He was 79. Mr. Logsdon was born on Nov. 30, 1919 in Davenport, Wash., to Frederic Guy and Cora Rebecca Irwin Logsdon. He was a graduate of Oregon State University. He was a retired chemist with B.J. Hughes Corp. Lloyd Ray Logsdon served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II, with duty spent in the Pacific Theatre. He was married to Audrey Janet Coplen for 49 years. They were blessed with four children. Lloyd was a man of many hobbies, with rock hunting being his favorite. He also enjoyed painting and was a member of the Ute Mountain Artists Society. Mr. Lloyd Ray Logsdon is survived by his wife, Audrey Janet of Dolores; two daughters, Sandra Lynn Colorado, and husband Chuck Schroeder of Cortez; Judy Lanet, and husband Randy Patterson of Dolores; two sons, Craig Douglas, and wife Donna of Anarbor, Mich.; and Guy Ronald, and wife Roseanna, of Tacoma, Wash. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Cremation has taken place with a private memorial service set for a later date. Wilamae Fox, 63, of Cortez, passed away in Albuquerque, N.M., on Thursday, Sept. 2, 1999. Willie had requested cremation and that no services be held. She was born to Willis Leslie and Dora Glee Farni Smith in Leedy, Okla., on March 29, 1936. Her family moved to Mancos before her first birthday. She was raised in Mancos and graduated from Mancos High School. Willie received her nurses training at Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Denver. She worked as a registered nurse at Southwest Memorial Hospital and also as a night supervisor for Vista Grande Nursing Home. For many years she worked as a volunteer for Hospice. Willie is survived by her mother, Dora Glee Smith, of Mancos; her sister, Marcheta Newholm, also of Mancos; a brother, Leslie Boots Smith, of Tucumcari, N.M.; and many nieces and nephews. Arrangements are being made through the Ertel Funeral Home.
Arthur Moe Morford Sr. passed away Aug. 30, 1999. He was born Sept. 6, 1918. Moe was in the Air Force for 21 years and enjoyed meeting and helping people. His hobby was doing all kinds of crafts. He is survived by his sons, Arthur Jr. and Marion Morford, Grand Junction; daughters Lindell Hopkins and Jean Hopkins from Moab, Utah; Ella McArthur, Wray, and Ann Warren from Rifle; their mother, Vivian Morford, Grand Junction, and his oldest son, Ronnie Morford, Rifle. He is also survived by one brother, Jim Morford, Olathe, and sisters Minerva Locke, Montrose; Betty Brouse, Glade Park, and Irene Bilyeu, Rock Springs, Wyo. He had many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Our father did not want a service, his children reported. He said he wanted everyone that knew him to remember him as he was, a man who had a smile for everyone, and that he was a friend to everyone that he had ever met.
Funeral services for William Albert Conner, a lifelong resident of this area, will be held Wednesday, Sept. 8, 1999 at the Ertel Memorial Chapel beginning at 10 a.m. Cremation is to follow. Visitation is scheduled for Tuesday evening at the Ertel Chapel from 7 p.m. until 8 p.m. Mr. Conner passed away at St. Mary's Hospital in Grand Junction, Colo., on Wednesday, September 1, 1999, at the age of 60. He was born in Cortez on June 18, 1939, to Robert and Irene Maness Conner. Those surviving him are his wife, Lola Conner, of Dolores; his children, Bill Conner, and his wife, Kristin, of Cortez, and Tina Griffith, also of Cortez; his ex-wife, Marie L. Conner, of Farmington, N.M.; his stepchildren and their spouses, Ray and Annette Davis, of Cortez, Jerry and C.J. Davis, of Lewis, and Anita and Frank Gray, of Cortez. Mr. Conner leaves behind two grandchildren, Jeremy Conner, and his girlfriend, Rosie Vigil, of Cortez, and Tonya Conner, of Cortez; one great granddaughter, Jami Conner, of Cortez; seven step-grandchildren, Raymond, Anthony, Shavana, K.C., Cristopher, Jessica, and Shayla, all of Cortez; his brother, Bob Conner, of Cortez; three sisters, Myrna Rice, of Montrose, Betty Gross, of Wichita, Kans., and Iva Steward, of Clovis, N.M.; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. His parents and an infant brother preceded him in death. Memorial contributions can be made in William A. Conner's name with the American Heart Assoc. Memorial services for Glen K. "Speck" Hanson will be held Saturday, Sept. 4, 1999, at the Ertel Memorial Chapel beginning at 2 p.m. A lifelong resident of Cortez, Mr. Hanson passed away at the Vista Grande Nursing Home on Tuesday, August 31, 1999, at the age of 78. He was born in Cortez on September 16, 1920, to Eric Helmer and Hazel Kirk Hanson. Glen, Speck as he was known to many, married Lavina Ballard on April 18, 1948 in Cortez at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church. He was a World War II Veteran and served as the Veterans Service Officer with the Red Cross since 1970. He was a member of the Lions Club and the VFW. Glen is survived by his wife of 51 years, Lavina Hanson, of Cortez; his children and their spouses, Terry and Tim McComb, of Cortez, Norman Eric and Arleen Hanson, of Mancos, and Kirk and Linda Hanson, of Citrus Heights, Calif.; three grandchildren, Tony McComb, Katrina Hanson, and Evan Hanson; his brother and sister-in-law, Don and Helen Hanson, of Cortez; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. Services will be conducted by the Ertel Funeral Home.
Owen Uptain of Naturita, a former resident of Cortez, passed away Aug. 31, 1999, at his daughters residence in Denver. Services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 3, at the Hale & Gerken Funeral Home Chapel in Naturita. Burial will follow the services in the Sylvan Cemetery in Pleasant View.
