November 1, 2001 This year’s election for Re-1 Board of Education directors is less than inspirational to constituents. Three incumbents — Sue Baacke, Peggy Blackmer and Tina Galyon — declined to seek re-election, and no one stands out as a strong candidate in either of the contested races. We recommend Leon Murdoch for District B. Murdoch, retired from the Job Service office and more recently employed as a community host, is a familiar face in Cortez. He currently volunteers with the school district and attends school-board meetings, and he has expressed an ongoing interest in the education system that now serves his grandchildren. For District F, Steven Bloink is the more articulate of the two candidates. A physician and the father of students, he clearly has spent some time thinking about education and local issues. Sheri Wright, a teacher running opposed in District D, will be a good addition to the board. She deserves a good ballot turnout to affirm her commitment to represent a diverse district. |
